Question regarding F2F Cashcaches

Cashcaches

Recommended Posts

I recently discovered Geocaching and am quite interested in doing some myself.

Are First to Find CashCaches allowed/encouraged or frowned upon?

I have an idea of making a 2-3 stage F2F cash caches in each state about 2-3 times a month. Cash ranges from 25-100 depending on the difficulty of the cache itself.

I will make a video each time I submit a F2F cash cache, explaining where in what state the Cache is at, and the details, along with the link of the submitted cache on this site etc etc.

Following the confirmation of each find, I will release a video explaining and showing where an how I hid the Cache, how much $ it contained, along with other stuff. Would this be interested in the community?

However, if this is frowned upon in the geocaching community, I will rethink my decision.

Thank you,

-CC.

I can't say personally if it's frowned on overall, but could see potential problems. Were a muggle to find the cache accidentally, could cause a situation where you have people assuming that all geocaches have money in them, and have folks going from cache to cache, ripping them apart, in search of loot.

I agree.

Already nuts with folks crying trackables aren't there and it's the only reason they went to the cache.

No longer a standard "FTF race", a true "real world treasure hunt" that would have folks hurting each other over FTFs.

Cash? In caches? Sounds like a bad idea. Caches go missing, non-cachers find them...

I think you might want to try geocaching a bit. This isn't really a treasure hunt, despite being called that. The contents of a cache usually are "trinkets", not cash.

And making a video to tell where the cache is won't fly. You need to submit a cache for Review, and if it is within the Guidelines, then it is published on GS's site.

I think you should very carefully read the Guidelines a few times. All that text in blue...those are links that you need to click.

A fundamental problem with your idea is the idea that you want to place caches in each state. You will be required to maintain the caches.

Owner is responsible for visits to the physical location.

You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to ensure it is in proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.), or posts a Needs Maintenance log. Temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have addressed the problem. You are permitted a reasonable amount of time – generally up to 4 weeks – in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing.

The region in which a cacher is considered able to maintain caches responsibly will vary from person to person. A cacher who has previously logged caches within a wide range of their home may be considered able to maintain a geocache 200 miles (322 km) away. However, someone whose geocaching activities have primarily been within 25 miles (40 km) of home may not be able to maintain a geocache this far from home. This factor is determined at the discretion of the cache reviewer or Groundspeak.

Because of the effort required to maintain a geocache, please place physical caches in your usual caching area and not while traveling. Caches placed during travel will likely not be published unless you are able to provide an acceptable maintenance plan. This plan must allow for a quick response to reported problems, and might include the username of a local cacher who will handle maintenance issues in your absence. Alternatively you might train a local person to maintain the cache. Document your maintenance plan in a Note to Reviewer on your cache listing. This should include contact information of the maintainer. The note will auto-delete on publication.

To be published on Geocaching.com, a cache must be hidden with the intention of it remaining in place for the long term.

Temporary caches, like making a cache available for just the first finder on a "winner take all" basis, are not published.

It would be fine for a generous cash prize FTF gift to be included in the cache, provided that the cache remains in place for other geocachers to find and sign their names in the log. That assume all other listing guidelines are met. For example, the cache cannot be placed as part of a commercial promotion - the "Cashcache" must be just the generous donation of the cache owner.
