Placing my first Cache

Have I missed something completely?

 

How do I get a log book to put into a new cache?

Do I need to make one myself? In which case, how do I do that, and where do I get the logo and wording on the top of it?

 

I can't see anything about it on the "Hide a Geocache" I don't know if I've just missed that bit, or I'm being dumb.

Welcome!

 

Usually we buy or make our own logbooks... depending on the size of your container.

But you can download a Cache Note with the guidelines.

 

PS: Maybe you can ask on your local community for a custom logbook that you can copy.

I like to use Rite In Rain log books, but we've seen them as note pads from the dollar store too.

The few micros we have use Rite In Rain strips, lined from a full page on the printer.

For log strips, we like Geocaching University's downloads.

What have you seen in the recommended 25 caches you foumd prior to planning this cache? You can use most anything that allows people to write their name on it. Ive seen notecards stapled together, small composition booklets (3 for a dollar at Dollar General a few days ago), printed sheets downloaded from Groundspeak, or small spiral booklets.

Many folks just make their own. Cheap dime store note pads are fine, or print out some free downloadable ones. Www.techblazer.com has a good selection of free downloads in various sizes. Print them up on water resistant Rite-In-The-Rain paper if you like, but regular old printer paper is fine too. If you've selected a properly watertight container it shouldn't matter if your paper is waterproof or not.

 

The log doesn't have to have the Geocaching logo on it, but it is a good idea to have the GC code # and name of the cache prominently on the log, along with www.geocaching.com. Even hand written is OK. This is in case any non-cacher accidentally finds the cache, so they'll have a means to figure out what it is, as well as for cachers to confirm they've found the correct cache.

 

Techblazer.com also has "stash notes" for free download, which is a more detailed explanation of what this container is for and what Geocaching is, again in case a non-cacher stumbles across it by accident. I always try to include a stash note in my caches as well.

 

Don't overthink it, as long as there is a clean, dry log in the cache, finders will know what to do with it. I usually put a dime store note pad in my regular sized caches and a printed downloaded logsheet in my smaller caches. One time I even used a length of EKG paper from a cardiac monitor....the cache was at an abandoned hospital and had a medical theme.
