stijn2002
Hello, I am new to geocaching. I live in the Netherlands and would like to support my son Stijn (13 y.o.) in this game. We have been using a smartphone (Android as well as iOS) uptil now. An experienced geocacher (beberg) however prefers to use a Garmin. She has a Garmin 450t. When visiting the garmin website I see that they launced a new type: Garmin eTrex30x. I wonder if this is the best Garmin to start with. Could anybody tell if I need to purchase additional maps or not ? Thanks for any reply, Boudewijn/Stijn Quote Link to comment
+BCandMsKitty
OK, nobody has responded to you yet, so I'll do my best. I'm not familiar with the model you are referring to other than a buddy has an Etrex 30 and he likes it a lot. I guess his won't have the three axis compass which maintains your heading while standing still. My wife has an Etrex 20 ($100.00) less then the one you are asking about, and it is a great little unit. Seems like what you get for your $100.00 is the ability to transfer data from one 30 to another wirelessly, and a 3 axis compass. Personally, I don't see much advantage for either of these for $100.00! If it were me, I'd get the Etrex 20 for a 13 year old. It is paperless, has capacity for a memory card for expansion, and will find caches every bit as good as the 30. You don't have to buy additional maps, but if you wish you can download and install free maps from HERE I did that for both my wife's Etrex 20 and my GpsMap 62s Hope this helps. Quote Link to comment
