Jelston88
Hello, my girlfriend and I went to Polesdon Lacey today and completed the National Trust geocaching. This was our first experience of geocaching and we both throughly enjoyed it. We feel it's something we would like to do more often so we are considering the resources required to be able to do it independently. We know we can use our phones but judging by the areas we were in today, our phones wouldn't have had enough signal to work effectively. Therefore is there a gps device we can purchase (that you would recommend) of a reasonable price? Thanks, J Quote Link to comment
+Graculus
With Premium Membership you can create Pocket Queries of up to 1000 caches at a time which you can download to the Geocaching app on your phone (iPhone or Android). That way you don't need to worry about losing the mobile signal. As you already have the phones that is a cheaper way than buying a GPS which is going to cost you about £120-£150 or so for a good basic model. If you do want to buy a GPS then be prepared to be inundated with suggestions of what is best . Do you want a touch screen or one that uses buttons to navigate the menus? To help you, all the current Garmin models are fully 'paperless' which means you can load those Pocket Queries into them. They also all support external maps* and there are excellent maps of the UK available free to download. On my resource site (link below my signature) you'll find a page about GPS devices with a comparison table and approximate UK prices. Why should you buy a handheld GPS? The two main reasons are ruggedness - they are pretty tough and waterproof and battery life. A handheld will run pretty much all day on one set of batteries. *Not the eTrex 10 Chris Graculus Volunteer UK Reviewer for geocaching.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- UK Geocaching Policies Wiki Geocaching.com Help Center UK Geocaching Information & Resources website Edited July 12, 2015 by Graculus Quote Link to comment
+Twentse Mug
... our phones wouldn't have had enough signal ... gps signal? Because that is the signal you need to find caches. Not the gsm signal. Quote Link to comment
+whh0
My advice would be, find a few more caches first before investing in a proper GPS. You really don't want to be spending £150 on something and then find that maybe geocaching isn't for you after all. There are lots of events taking place in August where you can meet other geocachers, we are a friendly bunch. Come along and see what is out there on the GPS front, then you can make an informed decision about what will be best for you. Quote Link to comment
