johnnyyork
I have just placed my first cache, and was wondering why I have an "archive" option in the right hand quick select menu on geocaching.com. What does mean, and what is it overall purpose?? Thanks! Quote Link to comment
Miragee
If you decided you don't want the cache listed on GC.com for any reason, you can "Archive" it. When you do that, as opposed to "Disable," only a Reviewer can un-Archive it. Quote Link to comment
webscouter.
If you ever decide that you don't want the cache anymore after you pick up the cache you hit the archive button. The cache will no longer appear on searches of the site, won't be in pocket queries. The information already there will be viewable for folks who know the name or number of the cache or have already found the cache. Quote Link to comment

J.L.H.21
can it still be found if archived? Quote Link to comment
TriciaG
can it still be found if archived? If the container is still out there, it can technically still be found. The Lackeys at Groundspeak can lock an archived cache such that it cannot be logged anymore, but most archived caches can still receive logs. However, definitely check the logs in the cache listing before going for an archived cache. (1) the container may not be there anymore, or (2) if there were land permission issues (such as a nearby landowner chased off the last searchers with a shotgun, or the landowners asked for the cache to be archived because they don't want trespassers) you shouldn't go there to look for it. If the cache was archived due to cache owner neglect only, then yeah - go find the cache, take it home with you so it doesn't turn into litter, and log the find. +Gitchee-Gummee
can it still be found if archived? You dug pretty deep to find this 8-year old thread. It could be found if it still exists.... but, archived caches are *supposed* to be retrieved in order to prevent "geo-litter". That's a part of cache maintenance. It does happen that a lot are never retrieved. There are lots of reasons for a cache to be/get archived. Some of those reasons are or could be hazardous to your health or well-being (trespassing issues, etc.). Quote Link to comment
