How do you know which multi is first

Hi all,

Please forgive my ignorance, and I had a search on the forum for an answer however it was to no avail.

When starting a multi, how do I know which cache to tackle first? The ones in my area don't give any indication.

I'm just wary of tracking down a cache and finding out it was step 3 of 7 and I've missed the first two.

Any information would be great.

If the multi lists all stages, it really doesn't matter which you went for first, but of course, usually, the multis are so designed that the final is somewher near last stage (or at least, much nearer last stage than first stage) so starting from the end will probably force you to go there and back once again.

If the next stage is based on the calculations from the previous one, of course you can't skip it, because you won't have the coordinates.

GC numbers of the multis you are looking at would help us with the explanation.

Each "gold double-tupperware icon" on the map is an individual caching experience - they are not connected to each other. It will have coordinates for you to find a starting location and at that place there may be a container (or something) with further coordinates for the next stage, until you get to the final location with the log to sign and claim the find. That is one example of multi cache set-up that I have found.

Sometimes there is a a question to answer about something at a stage which lets you choose the coordinates from a list to go to the next stage.

I think you may be confusing a Multi with a series or perhaps even a power trail. A Multi will only give you the location of the first stage. When you find the first stage, the coordinates of the second stage will be there...either in/on the container, if there is a container, or written on some other object like a tag or sign at those coordinates. So you find stage one and use the coordinates you find there to find the second stage, etc. Of course, you need to be able to enter those coordinates manually into your GPS or smartphone or whatever device you are using.

Are you talking about one of these? multi_72.gif

Here is a link to what the different cache types are: http://www.geocaching.com/about/cache_types.aspx

It sounds like you may have found a "Series" or "Power Trail" that has a final cache to find (a Mystery/Puzzle cache perhaps?) after you find the others. But, to be sure, can you post a link to the geocache(s) you're talking about?

Hi all,

Firstly a big thanks for the prompt response.

It appears, as you have all suggested, I think I have confused a multi with a series, however in this series there are some multi caches and some traditional caches. The caches I am referring to are GCYDKR, GCY9H7, GCY3CR and GCZJ8R.

Just a little FYI, my partner and I stopped at a park to try and locate our first cache tonight after dinner, it didn't go too well! Perhaps should have started with something easier than a 2.5 in the pitch black!

It looks like those caches are just individual caches that the owner grouped into a related series (all the cache names are "Damper One", "Damper Two", etc). Some of them are multi caches and some are Traditionals, but each one is an individual stand-alone cache. Do them in any order you like...they are only related to each other by a common owner and being part of the "Damper" series, whatever that is.

Yeah, that's a good idea. Go back in daylight and try again. Also, pay attention to the cache rating...stick to easy difficulty ratings (1-1.5) for now and also pay attention to the size....look for Smalls and Regulars, they should be easier to find than Micros, at least until you gain a little experience and know what you're looking for.
