Hey everybody my family and i just got started geo caching and we are having lots of fun so far we have found six. a few things i would like to know:

Do people get a tracking number, like is there some kind of tracking number that is assigned to me per say?

The next step of our adventure is to hide some cache's we made this a family affair, we went to the store and bought some nice things to go in the cache we have 5 dry storage boxes and the kids want to hide things they would like to discover in other cache's as well, we ordered official stickers for each box we have and a travel bug for each box as well, my question is will people replace the treasure in the cache with equal value stuff, also i am a wood turner, i turn things on the wood lathe and will be placing a cache out for homemade things only, will people honor this?

We love the adventure to the cache's it quite fun searching for them but my kids enjoy the treasure but don't like the junk we found a cache a few days ago with trash in it, we replaced it with some really neat stuff for the next guy and trashed what we took out is there any accountability in this when others find it? I am a new comer if anybody reads this post that lives close to middle Ga I live in fort valley ga send me a message would like to share this adventure with some knowledgeable people who know the ropes.

Thanks

Welcome!

Do people get a tracking number, like is there some kind of tracking number that is assigned to me per say?

You could buy a TB and make yourself 'Trackable' and let people 'Discover' you.

Suggest you read the Guidelines. Read them again, then re-read them!

Find a few more caches, then think about hiding your own. (Guidelines suggest finding "20 or so" before you hide one.)

In a perfect world, yes. In this world? I very much doubt it. :(

... also i am a wood turner, i turn things on the wood lathe and will be placing a cache out for homemade things only, will people honor this?

Honest answer? No.

However. Homemade items CAN make great swag, and signature items. Pop them in a bag with a note that explains they are handmake by you.

There is accountability... but it is one's heart. Just don't go thinking that all operate with the same "heart".

This recreation functions (mostly) by guidelines, not by rules.

Also remember this -- geocaches are placed in publicly accessible locations. ANYONE can find geocaches. Don't assume that geocachers only find geocaches.

A geocache, once compromised, is usually a 'repository' of wealth for local young'uns and folks of less-noble conscience. Sad perhaps, but true.

A cache with hand-made items would be awesome, but you cannot require others to trade only certain items, or even trade anything at all. That is known as an Additional Logging Requirement and it's not allowed. In order to claim a find, all one needs to do is find your cache and sign the log, period. You can make handmade items the theme of the cache and request that others trade only handmade items, but you cannot require it and you cannot delete their logs if they don't.

Also, don't expect all cachers to trade evenly. You might be disappointed to find your cache, lovingly stocked with handmade items, soon contains broken Happy Meal toys, pennies, marbles, rocks, used ticket stubs, etc. because these are the kind of contents that caches often degrade to after time.

SWAG in a cache generally downward no matter where it starts. If you want to keep the level up you will have to keep restock.

Thank you all for the replies. I got a better idea now. Seems to me like there could be a game within geocaching where people are rewarded for integrity but I suppose it's like everything else in our world when we set a standard for honesty and integrity it creates an elite group that people get sour about its ashame we cannot reward good behavior in our world today! We will hide our caches in hopes of the best and will be happy about it thanks again for the help

Someone once said to 'be the change you want to see in the world'. Someone else said to 'Lead by example'.

By trading up when I trade and by placing caches I would enjoy finding, I am doing my part. That's about all I can do.

Welcome to the game and I can already tell you and your family will be great cachers and really enjoy it! If you stick with it you will become friends with many of your local cachers. I stock our bigger caches with swagg for them and others to enjoy. Don't expect others to trade evenly so you wont be disappointed. This way if you do go check on one and find it filled with good stuff you can be pleasantly surprised. Most of ours the swagg degrades over time but I just hope that those that traded stuff had fun. That is what it is really about. Enjoy the logs you receive as that is the real fun of being a Cache owner.

We do have some caches that keep good swagg and cachers often trade. Others the swagg we left ends up being traded with garbage. We re-stock them from time to time. No big deal. If you have kids you will have extra toys to get rid of anyways so just throw them into caches.

The more and more you play the less and less you and your kids will care about the swagg. My daughter started out liking the swagg and now is in it more for the adventure. Just this weekend we found one with some cool swagg and a couple of things she liked, she just said...leave it for others to find.

This game gives you much more then some small trinkets in the long run.
