GSAK send waypoints... change symbols

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Yesterday I bought Oregon 650, which can store unlimited Geocaches. So I just send all the geocaches in Korea (total around 8000), it works. Great!!

However, the symbol is not as I expected, that is, I can't distinguish my found or my placed.

So I have searched here and there, and according to gsak help( http://gsak.net/help/hs8100.htm ), there's way to change symbols.

However I couldnt find the 'change symbols' option, in 8.4.0.0.

Anyway, I just want see geocaches like geocaching.com map. Is there any "simple' way?

Thanks in advance.

It won't show your found unless they were marked as found in GSAK when you downloaded it to the device.

I have never seen away to marked those you have placed but there is probably a way to do it in a macro if you ask over there. They have a macro for the Garmin Export that will change the title if the cache has corrected coords, parking or additional waypoints.

Like the OP, I've never found a way of modifying the default icon that will be pulled up by a unit or the application -- and that's because GSAK only seems to want to use one symbol during a cache export. The gpx file contains a 'symbol' tag (<sym>) that seems to apply the same symbol (Geocache) to all exported geocaches when a *.gpx file is created, regardless of cache type (e.g, traditional, virtual, etc). I've tried to override this using File / Export / GPX / "Make symbols same as last GPS send", but in spite of the fact that my Oregon 450 gets all of the appropriate tags, my gpx exports always just say <sym>Geocache</sym>

Yes, there is.

A. use a Groundspeak compatible GPX file for exporting your unfound caches.

B. send your found caches with the help of Garmin's Poi Loader (or do a GSAK Poi Export).

C. send your owned caches with the help of Garmin's Poi Loader (or do a GSAK Poi Export).

Parts B and C will give you the choice for using your own icons.

Part A automatically generates appropriate cache type icons based on the type tag

<type>Geocache|Virtual Cache</type>

I already know the process you mentioned, but I want to more simple process.

Just one button to send and go!

Anyway thank you very much.

I don't really understand why you don;t get different symbols. I get a different symbol for each type of cache using GSAkK for my Montana.

As noted, doing a direct send to my Oregon also produces unique symbols for each cache type. It's when I do a simple "Export" "GPX/LOC" with GSAK that I keep getting the same <sym>Geocache</sym> no matter that I check the box to use the last GPS setting for the <sym>. Suppose I should ask Clyde about it some day.

can someone tell me how to send my PQs to gsak. I could always do it but I think something has changed.

Yes, the most probable explanation is that something has changed. The question is what has changed. Sometimes those questions are hard to answer, especially when you don't have any information about what changed.

Not sure how you were 'sending' them before. You either download them to your PC and import them with GSAK with "File" / "Load GPX/LOC/ZIP", or you "Geocaching.com access" / "Download pocket queries". In neither case to do you "send" your PQs to GSAK.

Which method were you using? About the only way this goes wrong is if GSAK becomes unaware of your account number or it becomes invalid ... or their servers decide to quite creating even or odd numbered PQs, which happens often enough it seems.

Also, you need to be sure you have run a PQ recently enough to have it available and waiting for you at geocaching.com. GSAK doesn't 'run' them when you use "Geocaching.com access" / "Download pocket queries", it just shows what is available for download from whatever was already generated at geocaching.com either automatically (by day of week) or because you fired off one or more manually.
