This is nice, but it doesn't seem to be sticky. I'd like to collapse the "Recently viewed" section and have it stay collapsed on future visits to the page.

The settings are sticky so you should see the sections remain collapsed. Can you provide more details about the issue that you seeing when you try to collapse the "Recently Viewed" section?

Ah, it appears that I was bit by the wacky functionality of IE. When I initially tested in IE by collapsing the section, navigating to a different page, and then navigating back to the dashboard, the Recently viewed section was expanded again. However, I just tried it in Chrome and things work exactly as you'd expect. Also, once I closed and reopened IE, it's now recognizing the sticky collapsed section. It seems like IE just doesn't recognize the stickiness during a session, but will recognize it during the next session. I shouldn't be surprised that IE doesn't play nice.

Thanks for the follow-up! I am happy to hear that it is working as expected in Chrome. We saw IE working during testing, but we'll make a note to circle back and see if we can further tame the crazy that is IE <_<

Ok - so now we can shut off the bits we don't want. There's still no move to address the excessive whitespace issue.

I notice that there's no indication of the current status of a cache - disabled, archived, whatever. It's often been useful to see the status change in the recently viewed section, where I'm waiting on some action to be taken.

Recently Viewed still places metadata above AND below the cache name. Combining this into one line would reduce the wasted space at a stroke.

Recent Logs still displays 'You' on every line, even when displaying only my logs. Again, removing this redundant line will move the wasted space issue forward.

The good news is that my dashboard now appears as expected on my tablet in portrait mode. Thanks for fixing that.

However, there is still far too much wasted space. For "Recently Viewed", I have no need to be reminded about D/T values, or anything else except the cache name. Even the cache type icon is superfluous. Please make it all fit on one line.

For my "Latest Activity", having my geocaching name on a separate line for every log is redundant. I may be getting old, but I can still remember my caching name :) It would be better to have one line with the activity name (Found, Will attend, Did not find, etc.) as a link to the log and the cache name as a link to the name, something like

You Will Attend 6.gifIt's Puzzling Time????

I don't need my name as a link to my profile, although it doesn't waste any screen space, so it doesn't bother me that much.

I would still like the ability to choose which friends logs I would like to see. Fred's logs, but not Jim's logs. It would also be nice to have collapsible sections for each friend. All Fred's logs together; all Mary's logs together.

Things are definitely improving, but please don't waste so much screen space - Even on a decent sized monitor I have to scroll down to see most useful things.

You are going in the right direction. I'd love to have the logs stack per cacher as one person unloading all his or her power trail logs still floods my feed with boring logs rather than showing diversity of other cacher's logs.

And please enable the feeds in portrait on mobile. It sucks to always turn on desktop mode or rotate.

We are planning on adding the cache status to Recently Viewed and remove the 'You' on your own Activty in the next iterations. We will continue to review what data is most relevant in each section, but we do not currently have plans to remove the metadata in the Recently Viewed or combine it into a single line.

We have discussed adding the ability to select which friends you see in your feed, but that is not likely to happen for some time. We are however continuing to work towards condensing your friends logs into a single line to reduce the noise when your friend has an epic day.

Please continue to send us your feedback as we roll-out new iterations so we can make on-going improvements.

That's good, I do want to see the associated metadata for revently viewed caches, however the way it's presented is messy. I'd rather see all the data on one line, and without the superfluous and meaningless icons for D/T/Size. The way it's presented now makes it really difficult to quickly scan the list if, for example, looking to find that cache which had a particular D/T.

Thanks for collapse of Recently Viewed.

Placement of the "manage preferences" link seems even more obscure now than it was before? It's under the pull down menu to the right of Latest Activity.

Reviewer account - logs shown are ONLY Temporarily Disable, and only a fraction of those. Mm, a bit more digging, I think the new dashboard shows only Temp Disabled logs to published caches.

Thanks for the feedback, palmetto. We've got plans to display all admin logs for reviewers, soon. :) Working on it - bit by bit.

Since I don't use the Recently Viewed list and can now collapse it, this doesn't affect me personally. That being said, can you give us some background behind this decision? Excessive whitespace and scrolling are recurring themes, so IMO anything that can be done to help with these should be considered. Even if it's only a pixel or two here and there, it can add up to make more recent logs visible, more side-menu features visible, etc.

IMO, the entire Recently Viewed formatting as it currently stands is, well, strange. The icon and cache name are significantly larger than in the Latest Activity section for no apparent reason. This causes inconsistency on the page and takes up more space than is necessary. By using the same smaller icon and cache name formatting as in the Latest Activity section and consolidating the metadata into one line (or even further consolidating with the name into one-line-per-cache), the amount of space could be decreased by quite a bit and make more content available farther down the page.

Other whitespace that would be great to reduce is in the side menu. For example, between the avatar and cacher name, between the member type and renewal date, between the joined date and View profile button, and at the beginning and end of each section within the menu (e.g. before the GEOCACHES heading and after Hides). By trimming things down there, many more menu options would be available without the need to scroll. As it currently stands (understanding that the "new dashboard experience" banner wouldn't be there in the final product), I can only see down to "Owned trackables" without scrolling (approximately the end of the trackables section without the banner). The features I use the most, like lists and PQs, are much farther down and therefore always require scrolling.

TL;DR: There's too much whitespace and lots of places it can be reduced, so please do so.

The only reasons I could fathom at this point for explicitly incorporating a high quantity of white space and space usage are:

* An instance of a user that requires this design and layout (with no flexibility) so much (for whatever reason, even legitimate) that Groundspeak will not budge

* A designer that is 100% confident that it is the best approach and will not budge

* Under threat of lawsuit, someone is requiring the design of Groundspeak who thus will not budge

The only one I can understand, but would be floored if true, is the first one. Honestly, there are so many solutions around the whitespace design thing, which is consistently raised in almost every update, that I'm legitimately confused as to why it's never addressed.

Ok, I shouldn't say never, there was at least one update a while back that reduced some of the whitespace. But then th next update the comments returned because there was still too much :P

Is there a reason why space usage is so high, with no options for flexibility, in many of the recent design philosophies for the web pages? I mean, if we can write scripts that effectively 'toggle' all the padding off in the browser, on the front end alone, it really is as simple as a togglable user option for say "Enhanced readabiliy". Give the user the option to decide if they want compressed or expanded content.

Maybe there is sufficient reason to have an accessibility section in our account settings for something like this. But to impose a specific design philosophy which prompts repeated and hefty concern from the community yet with no room for flexibility seems ... disconcerting. =/

Release Notes (Website only) - June 20, 2017

With this release you can now collapse or expand sections on your Dashboard to see only what is relevant to you.

Ok, one small step into the right direction, but I still prefer the old style dashboard by so far you couldn't imagine... Roughly the only part of the dashboard I'm interested in are the recent logs. MY recent logs as I don't care too much about others. So the "You" is completely unneeded for me. But I'm missing roughly every other info from the old dashboard! It's just 2 things I would have changed in the old style:

1. Adding the GC code

2. Putting the "Visit log" link directly to the appropriate action -> create a link for "Posted a note" or "Found" to the log

Right now I only have a link to the log and not to the cache itself which I'm using WAY more often than the link to my personal log.

The menu is still in the completely wrong order according to my usage. I would like to see PQs and lists being way more up. Now I always need to scroll down. There's a reason why about every computer program has a menu on top of the screen.

Waste of space is also something that I wonder why it should be needed.

After seeing the actual version I still will stay with the old one, sorry.

We are planning on adding the cache status to Recently Viewed and remove the 'You' on your own Activty in the next iterations. We will continue to review what data is most relevant in each section, but we do not currently have plans to remove the metadata in the Recently Viewed or combine it into a single line.

Like MartyBarfast, I also appreciate seeing the metadata for Recently Viewed caches. I don't think each entry in that section needs to be condensed to one line, but I would still like to see it condensed AND the GC Code added.

Here is a mock-up of how I'd like to see it presented:

Well done! And I simply would like to see something similar for the logs, too! Simply getting way more info there...

Very nicely done! I like that a lot. Getting rid of some of the white space makes a big difference.

Mockup is my favorite is well. I find that ordering more intuitive. otherwise it is hard to read the D and T in the middle.

Talking of T and D. I still don't like the D and T icons. "Stars" are part of talking about D and T rating. Please don't remove them. I also find starts to be quicker to read than numbers.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Glad you like the collapsible sections. :)

Just a quick heads up that the 'Latest activity' functionality is down for everyone right now. We're working on the issue and hope to have it back up and running again soon. Thanks for your patience!

I can't remember if this has been brought up, but on my Dashboard under Recent Activity there are 12 entries for "X user" submitted "cache" for review. I think this would be something you would NOT want anyone, outside of the cache owner and the reviewer, to see. I'm sure my friend doesn't want me to see when they submitted their 12 caches for review.

Thanks so much for reporting this, Sherminator18! I've written up a bug and it's at the top of our backlog.

Also, I am now seeing the last 30 days in the Latest Activity section. And there is probably hundreds of logs in this section for me now, which includes every single trackable that my friends have visited to caches. I really don't care to see about which trackables my friends have visited at caches. This section currently takes up SO MUCH SPACE, it seems to go on forever. The amount of entries on here is a bit ridiculous. I don't think there is any reason to see the caches or trackables that my friends logged a month ago.

I originally liked seeing which caches my friends found in the past few days, but if there's going to be a list of hundreds of entries, I think I'm changing my mind. I think 30 days worth of information is a bit excessive and that the trackable visit logs are unnecessary.

Yep, we agree and we already have plans in place to work on both of those points of frustration. We'll be excluding trackable visit logs soon and condensing more than one entry from a friend in a day to "benandjayme found X cache and 99 more - click to view".

Hi everyone! I have a very exciting announcement to share with you. As of this morning we have migrated the Recent Activity feed to a new API. We began work on this shortly after the Dashboard was launched and there have been a lot of moving pieces to wrangle to get to this point. With the outage of the Recent Activity feed yesterday we moved up our release date to mitigate further issues with the old system. With the timeline moved up there are a few small issues that we are working out so bear with us as we get the system settled in.

In addition to performance improvements we have made several additional changes that you will hopefully enjoy.

1) You can now see all of your logs for the last 30 days!

2) When viewing your community logs you will see the last 7 days. We launched with 30 days, but we were seeing requests returning with upwards of 4,000 logs which seemed excessive. 7 days will be our starting point as we work on collapsing friend's logs.

3) Logs are now being ordered by the date of the log instead of the date that you created the log.

One caveat: Part of this project included making our trackable data available where it wasn't before. To do this we started processing information about all trackable activity 2 weeks ago. That means that we do not currently have trackable data in this system further back than 2 weeks ago, but we will be tracking everything going forward. In another 2 weeks your 30 day feed will include all of your activity.

We will be continuing to monitor performance of the new system and gathering feedback as we make improvements.

Thanks!

You should only see the last 7 days of logs for you and your friends (Community). If you are looking at only your logs you should see 30 days.

Thanks for making these changes! They make the Latest Activity section much more useful and it will be even better once friends' logs are collapsed. If you also use both log type and cache type icons and link to the cache listings, I'd be a happy user.

One request I'd like to make: Since Latest Activity groups the logs by date rather than each record having the date like the old dashboard, the date headings become very important. As it is now, the date headings blend in very well and are hard to spot while scrolling. Can you use some kind of highlighting and/or larger font to make them stand out more?

That is a very good point. I'll make a note to see what we can do to increase the contrast/visibility of the dates.

Got it. Thanks. It seems to be working as you describe.

-------

Similar to what The A-Team mentioned, I'd like to see the icons standardized. For example, I see a TB icon for Write Note and Retrieve logs, but there is no icon at all for a Dropped log. I think it was mentioned in an earlier Release Notes thread that the mixed use of cache type and log type icons is confusing.

I noted my personal preference in another post HERE, which is essentially to have each entry structured as follows - with each entry having two icons:

[log type icon] [log type linked to log] [cache type icon] [cache name linked to cache]

For example:

You [smiley icon] Found [green box icon] Camel's Prairie Stash

You [frownie icon] Didn't Find [question mark icon] This cache is a mystery

Friend-1 [envelope icon] Will Attend [red message box icon] CITO: Let's Clean Up the town!

Friend-2 [frownie icon] Didn't Find [question mark icon] This cache is a mystery on [date]

Thanks for having us seen all the logs again, that's a step in the right direction! I also would like to see way more info like in the "recently viewed" area. It's still just the link to the log that I mostly don't care any longer. But I might want to check the cache for my friend's logs and that's some thing I'm using this quite often.

In addition the date font is too small compared to the log style. Hard to be found while scrolling and as I have MANY logs per day I even don't see any date on some pages at all. So I would still vote for full info per line!

Here is something I just noticed. I had my Latest Activity section set to community (see mine and all my friends logs). I then clicked on one of the logs to see what it said. Great. I then clicked the back button to go back to my dashboard and then Latest Activity section went back to being just my own logs. I've never seen this happen before on either of the computers I use. Is anyone else seeing this issue? Shouldn't the selection be sticky?

I am running Windows 10 with Google Chrome.

Good to see my logs from recent 30 days and those 7 days in community logs will do until you roll out the logs grouping :). The icons are still inconsistent though - showing the log type for FI and DNF, the cache type for others.

3) Logs are now being ordered by the date of the log instead of the date that you created the log.

I see, you wanted the same sorting as with the old dashboard. But there is one difference - I've just posted a test log on one of my cache pages. I can see it on the old dashboard but not on the new one.

This becomes more important in the community recent logs - many friends of mine log their finds more than a week after their caching trip. Sometimes they do it even after a month or more. I would miss their logs in the current state of the new dashboard.

I would actually prefer the logs to be ordered by the date they were posted on. A log that my friend posted a minute ago should appear on the top of my dashboard so I reliably notice it and not on the bottom just because he is a few weeks delayed with logging. It is a dashboard after all, not a cache page. The aim of the community recent logs section is to notify me about logs my friends have posted (if they agreed so in their settings). If the logs are freshly written but get buried under older ones because of their date, that goes against this purpose. One would have to scan the entire feed to (maybe) catch what's new instead of convenient check of the top of the feed.

Is there a particular reason why the icon is pointing is up when when the list is up, and shown pointing down when the list is already down?

They are reversed from what I would expect since they are functional icons, they should indicate what you get when you click there. You do have the other down indicators set up correctly. Just these appear opposite of what you would want.

Is anyone else seeing this issue? Shouldn't the selection be sticky?

I am running Windows 10 with Google Chrome.

Hi! Are you still seeing this issue or did it happen only once? The settings are certainly sticky so it would be unexpected for your settings to change, but if that is continuing to happen then we can investigate further to find the cause. Thanks!

Yes, this is still happening. And I am on a different computer now. This time I switched it to "Yours" and clicked to view a log and then clicked the back button and it went back to "Community"

Here is what I just figured out. If I change the setting for the Latest Activity from one selection to the other, I have to refresh my page before selecting a log and then using the back button does not switch the selection from Yours to Community or vice versa. It should save without me having to refresh the page.

I believe I have reproduced the issue that you are seeing, but my setting is sticky. If I change my selection, click on a log then use the back button I will see the original selection - not the selection I changed to (the same as you described). If I hit refresh then my "new" selection will show up correctly which suggests that the server correctly stored my new setting.

Based on my understanding of browsers the original request(s) to load the Dashboard is cached so that when you go "back" it is grabbing the cached settings as they were when you originally loaded the page (this is done early in the page life cycle so that multiple components on the page can reuse). By refreshing your page you are requesting the settings fresh which is why it shows up correctly.

That makes sense, which leads to a sticky situation.

When someone is viewing just their own logs, they'll usually want to see them displayed on the dates for which they were logged (not the dates on which they were submitted). However, as you pointed out, it makes more sense to see them on the submitted date when viewing the Community logs. Having these different views behave differently would like be confusing for many people, and you'd have a disconnect between the dates shown for your own logs on the two different views (ie. on Yours: date logged, on Community: date submitted).

I'm not sure how to solve this while still keeping everything in one list.

I noticed a sorting issue last night that I don't think was happening before. When I finished logging my finds for the day (which largely consisted of finding numbered caches in ascending order, so it was easy to spot the issue), I noticed my finds are wildly out of order on the dashboard. For example, the earliest 8 logs that my dashboard shows for yesterday are actually the 1st, 53rd, 15th, 14th, 7th, 13th, 12th, and 11th logs that I submitted for the day. The rest of them are completely out of order too. Looking back at previous caching days, those logs are displayed out of order too, but I'm 99% sure they were in the correct order as of about a week ago. I'm using the "Yours" view.

Okay, things are getting weirder. I first saw the issue in Firefox at home last night, and am still seeing the issue today in IE11. When I just tried it in Chrome, I got a different sorting order than in IE11 (still way out of order). On a hunch, I tried refreshing the page in Chrome, and the order changes each time! Something has gone horrible wrong with the sorting on the dashboard.

Despite the dramatic description of the situation this is actually both easily explained and (not quite as) easily fixed. Last week (and since launch) we were ordering the logs based on the date the log was created. When you post a log we tag it with a very precise UTC based date + time. This makes sorting logs by the date very easy because the time precision nearly guarantees a unique key for everything. Now however, we are using the date the log was "found" (regardless of when the log was created). I won't go into all of the minor details because it is something that we are still trying to unwind here, but the log date often does not have a time associated with it, only the date. That means that your logs are all listed on the same date. Without a secondary sort parameter they are all tied for "most recent" so which log gets returned first is dependent on how the hamsters are feeling at the moment.

In order to resolve the issue we'll simply add a secondary sort parameter that will act as a tie breaker in the case that the dates do not have enough precision to properly identify the order of the logs.

Thanks for letting us know that the hamsters were being mischievous again :)

Great news for those of you who have friends that dip dozens of trackables in every geocache that they log. Trackable visit logs will no longer be displayed when viewing your community activity (dropped and discovered are still displayed). Your own TB visits will be available when viewing just your activity. We may take another look at TB visit logs once we are able to collapse your friends logs together.

Previously, they were always returned by date (and time if available), and then by unique log id. So not 'randomly', but in the order they were created on that specific date. That's how I'd hope/expect to see them listed again. (at least, that's certianly how it appeared they were displayed in the old dashboard)

What's the possibility of having filter options on that dynamic list? That would resolve many of these confusions. Have the default views as we currently do, but provide an 'advanced' couple of options, for example, defining which logs are being included or hidden (yours, or friends, and trackable logs), and the order they are being displayed (date posted, date created).

Modify those options and you suddenly have the ability to see the logs you desire, and as you wish. The page can just requery with the selected options, just as choosing "Yours" or "Community" currently does.

Personally I'd like the list to show just my own recent logs, including my trackables, ordered by date posted - this is how the old Dashboard view worked. Having the ability to turn on Friends' logs and hide all Trackable logs (this would be a great flexibility) would be my next favoured view. Then if I wanted to see my friends recent activity I could hide my logs and show my friends' sorted by date created.

I don't personally have any desire to really see any friends' trackable logs in this module, so having the ability to hide those would be super valuable.
