Release Notes - May 13, 2015

Well, hello there! This week’s updates to Geocaching.com include:

  •

  • You can now send messages from a Trackable details page with the TB code pre-populated in the Message Center text field.
  • Added link to player profiles from the avatar images in Message Center.
  • Gave the Send Email to User page a new look.
  • Made the latest round of translation updates.
  • Fixed bugs such as:

    A 404 error on “Clear Search Filters” in Internet Explorer 11.

    Pressing enter after previewing a location on the cache submission map now allows you to continue the cache submission process.

Great to see more improvements to the BETA messaging system and more modern designs for the rest of the site. Keep them coming! :grin:

Yeah, except every feature they add to the messaging system could have been added to the e-mail system years ago.

I do not like the new yellow banner that directs to the new search. When using the searches like "all nearby caches" or explicitly using the old search I do not need to be reminded of the new search which is anyway unusable to me.

The yellow banner together with the green one and the large white part in between takes away a lot of space from the search results - and now scrolling also with the old search is more and more needed. If turned around by 90 degrees it looks like the Ireland flag. I'd prefer a simple design which avoids colour effects and concentrates on functionality.

On the other hand I'm glad that I do not need to read the text on the yellow banner. White letters with yellow background - what a brilliant idea. Is any of the designers over 50 and/or has a weak vision?

[*]Gave the Send Email to User page a new look.

Am I crazy or did you change the colour of the text one types in e-mail messages? It appears now be a grey with a very bad contrast. I more and more get despaired. In guess in 5 years I will not be able to read a single letter on this site.

On my PC using Firefox 38.0 on a Windows 7 PC, the text in the message box is simply black, and perfectly visible. What browser are you using, and are you sure this isn't a browser settings issue?

Certainly not a browser issue - the same happens for Firefox and Chromium and on Linux and Windows.

The gray is now the same as on most other pages of the site (recent change a few weeks ago) and not the dark (black) it is used to be before the change and the release notes confirm that they changed the e-mail user page's look.

The text is visible but it is much less well readable to me than in the previous version. All the changes Groundspeak announces proudly are to the worse for me.

That's black text

Does the text in the e-mail window look like that for you? Or rather gray?

I see the same as cezanne. The font colour used in the text box is now #7E7D7A (RGB: 126, 125, 122), rather than black (#000000, RGB: 0, 0, 0). Running the new colour through a contrast checker results in a mostly-fail, passing only one accessibility test that doesn't even apply to the "Send E-Mail" page anyway (that test is for fonts 18 pt or larger, but the font in that text box is a hair under 10 pt).

I'm seriously starting to think that Groundspeak is forced to pay their ISP or someone else for the amount of black they serve up. Other than ads or avatars, can anyone see any black on the "Send E-Mail" page (or any of the other pages that have been given the new style)? Nothing beats black and white for contrast, but Groundspeak seems to have become strangely averse to decent and acceptable contrast.

This seems strange to me. I'm not seeing any gray text anywhere on the geocaching Web site (though there are some text areas, like the Personal Cache Note area on a cache page, that have a gray background). I use Firefox 38.0, with no plug-ins, extensions, or browser options that affect text display.

Can someone list one or more pages on the geocaching site that display this gray text? Links to the pages would be very helpful for those of us having trouble seeing the problem.

On the Message Center page: https://www.geocaching.com/account/messagecenter

The textarea for the message you're typing uses this rule:

html, button, input, select, textarea {
   color: #5F452A;
}

Right above it, the message someone just sent to you uses these rules:

html, button {
   color: #4A4A4A;
}
.user-two ol {
   background-color: #EFEFEF;
   [...]
}

On any cache description page, for example: http://coord.info/GCK1CC

The cache description and the logs use this rule:

body {
   [...]
   color: #594A42;
   [...]
}

Every other log also uses this rule:

.LogsTable tr:nth-child(2n) td {
   background-color: #EBECED;
}

OK, now that I look closely at the text you've pointed out, I can see that they're not quite black.

On the other hand, the same text seems "black enough" for these 65-year-old eyes that I hadn't even noticed it before.

In case anybody's wondering, my monitors are both carefully calibrated for my photography/Photoshop work, so that isn't a factor.

Just to be clear, the link for the Send E-Mail page isn't exactly where we're seeing the grey text. You have to enter a username and get to the point where you can actually type the message (we can't link right to that point, you have to get there yourself). I see black text in that first username box, but the message box has the unmistakably-grey text I described in my last post.

I find it even more interesting (and strange) that the colours in use are all over the board, based on niraD's post. The Send E-Mail grey is different from any of those.

I went to look (yeah, I guess it's a little greyer than it needs to be), and I was heartily "amused" to see the box is labeled "Message", then under the box two check boxes are labeled "I want to send my email address along with this message" and "Email me a copy of this message", and then there's a big box to click saying "Send Message". So there's every reason to expect all those "send message" links popping up everywhere on the site to take me here to this page in order send an e-mail. But, of course, they don't.

Some browsers/OSs may have fonts set to smoothing, and if that's the case, then a very thin font could appear much more faded than if it were rendered as solid pixels. That may be the case.

But I very much agree, non-black for very functional text - such as input boxes - is a Bad Idea.

The text in the email text box is gray for me as well. Tested in Firefox and IE.

[ETA: I see that this has already been agreed on]
