Mentioning other apps

Recommended Posts

Does someone have a link to the rules about mentioning other apps in these forums, or know what the unwritten rules are?

1. Another professional New Zealand cacher had some issues with the GS app; I posted a reply recommending a particular 3rd party app. My post was silently deleted.

2. I posted another answer, mentioning that some 3rd party apps don't have the same limitations (so no names). Again silently deleted.

There seems to be a problem with just one app starting with c: and ending in geo. All others seem not to be a problem.

It is fine to discuss authorized partner apps. The problem with the posts described by the OP is that they were off-topic to the thread in which they were posted. A Release Notes thread should be limited to just the subject of the Release, as it's followed by the Lackeys responsible for that release. The applicable forum guideline states:

6. Keep on topic: Responses to a particular thread should stay on-topic and pertain to the discussion. Users should use the New Topic button to start a new discussion which would otherwise be off-topic in the current thread.

I know that we are not to mention c:geo because it scrapes data from this site and does not use their API. :)
Yes and no. There was a time when any reference to c:geo was deleted/redacted with extreme prejudice. So much so that it took me a while to figure out which app was the site-scraping app that wasn't supposed to be named.

Now, as long as you aren't promoting it, and as long as references to it are on-topic, they seem to be much more tolerant of references to it.

Actually - I mentioned my displeasure with the new app and that I'd discovered a great new one starting with c and ending with achly. Rather than being silently deleted I received an email telling me that if I continued I'd be put in timeout.

I immediately stopped posting about any app on this forum and started evangelizing offline about the benefits thereof...

Yes - they're watching...

Hmm. I've mentioned my favourite app at least a few times (it's an API partner), and haven't received any warnings or seen any posts disappear.

I believe that, as long as you stick to the facts, and avoid slagging any app (beyond pointing out facts), you should be okay. (Except maybe if you mention that one unauthorized app, dunno).

I figure, any good authorized app that helps people play the game, should also help sell premium memberships, and therefore should be in the Frog's good books and Christmas card list.

But I've been wrong before...

You received a warning for posting off-topic. The Geocaching iPhone App Forum section is for bug reports and feature suggestions about... the Geocaching iPhone App. You were specifically told that it was OK to post about Cachly in other forum sections where it's on topic to do so, including your post about Cachly in the API forum. The API forum is the best place to discuss questions about official partner apps.

I did not want your misleading post to dissuade others from discussing authorized partner applications such as Cachly. I am glad that you enjoy Cachly, and wish you happy geocaching with that app.
