Pup Patrol
How can I get the new app to display distance in miles instead of km? Help Center - Apps http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.book&id=12 1.4. Change distance units (miles/kilometers) http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=770 B. +Spinazzola
The UK uses imperial units i.e. miles. The old APP worked a treat with the location set at the UK and distance showed in feet/yards & miles. Please add a settings within the APP to enable the units to be changed otherwise everybody in the UK will have to relocate to the US of A. Quote Link to comment
+noncentric
To the OP: purely out of curiosity - I thought that the UK was officially using the metric system and it was only a few things (like road signs and beverages) that were allowed to continue using imperial units, but that even those would need to switch to imperial units after a particular date (2015?). Is that not correct? Quote Link to comment
+Viajero Perdido
Why should anyone be forced to use the unit system of their country, if they happen to be more comfortable with the other system? This is simply between a user and an app that *should* be able to offer either option. I gather the UK is somewhere between the two systems, so trying to force the "official" system seems even more pointless. Quote Link to comment

I wasn't implying anything about what system someone should use. I was just curious about the OP's statement that the UK still uses imperial, because I was under the impression that the UK was officially using the metric system after several years-long metrification process. +Spinazzola
The UK uses MPH and distance is measured in miles (as in google maps etc.) weights however are measured in Kg. Please give us the choice to use whatever distance measurement we prefer. Quote Link to comment
+narcissa
What a strange thing to omit. In Canada, we're officially metric now but many people prefer imperial. This would make the app essentially unusable for my husband, who is already pretty resistant to it in the first place. Quote Link to comment

Select a region that uses Imperial units (e.g. United States) or a region that uses metric units (e.g. United Kingdom). It would be nice to be able to change units without exiting an app and then having to go through setup and relaunch and get back to whatever functional use you left off at. Daily I work with an Information System where the developers think everything they do is right - I had to quote the Federal Register to them for how people are assigned racial heritage (used for ensuring equity) I was baffled they couldn't find that info themselves and decided not to count Filipinos at all. I'm getting used to this style of development. I don't like it, but I'm getting used to it. Quote Link to comment

It is a mixture in the UK. The "forcing" is topical, as that came from the EU, of which the UK is still part of, but has formally given notice that we will be leaving. European units of measurement directives For distance, we use miles, yards etc. Speed limits are in MPH. When purchasing things, weights and measures have to be metric. Beer is still sold in pints (in pubs), but technically you are buying 568 ML of beer. You can go into a shop and ask for a pound of meat and they won't question it, but the scales will print out the weight in Kilograms, and the price shown will be per kilogram. However, I cache in metres on my GPS. I just prefer it. Edited April 13, 2017 by redsox_mark Quote Link to comment

I don't know what this comment means. I don't think visitors would be inclined to change their device settings while travelling, and I am in favour of allowing people to select the measurement they prefer regardless of where they live or happen to be. +Spinazzola
If I log in to geocaching on my PC which knows where I am - Oxfordshire UK, all displays are in imperial - such a shame the APP doesn't replicate this. Quote Link to comment

There is a configurable preference on the Website to choose imperial or metric. I'm not sure if it defaults to imperial because you are UK, or if that is the global default. I believe the old app used this setting. The new app uses the system settings on the phone. Quote Link to comment

+hal-an-tow
I'm of the opinion that folk should have the option of choosing metric or imperial units as they wish, but as a small child back in the Jurassic eraI had to learn 12d to the shilling, 20/- to the £ , 21/- a guinea, 1760 yards to the mile, 16 oz to the lb etc etc. Exercise books had a table taking up the entire back cover showing the relationships of various mysterious things like furlongs, chains, and acres. It was a welcome change for me and my classmates when the florin became 10p, everything was a nice simple 10, 100 or 1000 of something else, and confusing to compare fractions of an inch calculations ("Which is greater , 5/16ths" or 4/11ths" ?" Aaargh !) were substituted with millimetres ! Science the world over uses the metric system, and only 3 countries (according to wikipedia, which is , as we know , always right ) still officially use imperial, stating: "Since 2006, three countries formally do not use the metric system as their main standard of measurement: the United States, Myanmar, and Liberia." . Apparently those latter two are in the process of switching to metric. In the UK the only legally allowed use of imperial measures is beer & cider ... and roadsigns. I'm guessing the latter is about the cost of wholesale replacement and the political vote loss which would follow, and the former is just about the votes ! Children in English schools are taught using the metric system, and I mostly get a horrified reaction if I explain to them what those weird numbers on the other edge of their ruler are about, and the bizarre random 'system' they were part of. Give it another 40 years, when me and my generation have all died out, and the USA will be the only country in the world regularly using imperial measurements. Which is kind of ironic to my mind . +redsox_mark
My iPhone is set to UK language & region and all map apps on it show imperial distance! Ok, I've been a bit slow. I think I get it now. According to the help center: Select a region that uses Imperial units (e.g. United States) or a region that uses metric units (e.g. United Kingdom). So it seems the new app chooses based on some hard coded logic. And for UK, it thinks metric is correct. This is a step backwards from letting the user choose which they wish to use. So if you sent your iphone to USA, you will get Imperial. But you will also see dates in a different format etc. Quote Link to comment
