Introduction and Hello!

Hello all, I hope this post finds everyone in great spirits. I recently started geocaching, and did so quite unexpectedly. My first cache (non-logged) was a few months ago when i was walking my dog in a very wooded area. My eye caught a glint of metal sitting in a hole in a tree (how I actually saw it was beyond me). I took it out of the hole and thought what an odd find. I never opened it up, I simply put it back and went on with my walk. By the time I got home I was itching to know what the heck it was and I went out again and found it quite easily. Inside was a wet notebook, a pencil with a broken tip, and a kids lego toy. Nothing on the package said Geocache, and nothing on the log said anything but peoples names and dates. it was literally a mystery that needed to be solved.

To make a long story short I did some searching on Google and now here I am. An owner of a Garmin 62s GPS, and about three dozen cache locations transferred to my GPS. I have found a total of five caches, logged two, and placed one. All I know is that I love finding them as much as I love placing them and that I think that I am addicted. This upcoming weekend I have mapped out 15 finds. Not sure if I will get to them all, but I can't wait to try. I can't wait to add to my adventures and learn more about the game, strike that, lifestyle. I can see myself doing this for a long long time.

Thanks and I hope to meet some of you out there one day

PS. I was just notified that my hide is invalid. When I first went out I had two cell phone based GPS units. Both were giving me bad coordinates. The new coordinates have my cache too close to another one. I guess I will retrieve it this weekend and try to find another hiding place. Bummer!

Welcome to the fun and the forums! When you rehide your cache, read the "hiding your first geocache" guidelines - 2 or 3 times - first. When I reread something, I always find something I have missed...usually the most important thing. Always worth a reread with each new hide, as the guidelines can change. Your determination to find out what that hidden container was is great. Ask any questions you want here - there are a lot of friendly and knowledgeable folk willing to help.

Glad to have you playing! I feel you are one to get the bug as we did! Tuns of fun! Don't let that first hide get you down as we all do that at some point. We have out over 150 hides and still sometimes mess up our new ones. Start thinking of places you like to go and check to see if there are caches nearby. Some will also end up being blocked by puzzles and stuff you can't see but it is all part of the game.

For the one you have you will have to check out nearby areas that could work for the hide and re do the description and coords or you should just archive it and move on to your next hide. Have fun.

Like you, I was eager to hide my first cache. I had found several but it took me 3 tries with the reviewer before I got it right, even though I had read the guidelines a couple of times. The point is ... the more we find, the easier it is to understand what is needed to hide a good cache. (A good GPSr helps too, of course! )

There are cache hides (that fulfill all the requirements) and then there are good cache hides (ones that get favorite points from other cachers, and ones that folks have fun with.)I always strive for the second kind.

Sounds like you have the right attitude, and aren't too bummed about needing to re-hide. Take your time, and maybe even find a few more ... can't hurt!
