+rockgardenrider
Saying hello as a brand new member...so here is how I got started...this week actually, and never having known anything at all about Geocaching. I have a desert vacation home that I go out to a couple weekends a month. The home is located in Johnson Valley, CA near Rock Corral if anybody is familiar with the area. Last weekend I was riding my dirtbike (that's right I am an off-road rider and yes I do stick to the existing trails!) and I took a trail I had never been up before. At the top I got off my bike and sat down on some rocks. I just happened to look down and saw something white in the rocks. I reached in and pulled out a small tin box. I had absolutely no idea what it was but at the risk of releasing some evil spirit I went ahead and opened it. To my surprise it was full of various artifacts, and had a log book in it. Then I remembered that it might be a geocache, but I wasn't certain. I decided to sign the log book and put it back in its place which I did. I didn't have a GPS with me so I couldn't mark its location (but I will go back up there with one soon). Later this week I asked a buddy and once I described it he confirmed that it was indeed a geocache. So, I found this site and looked up the map for the Johnson Valley area and wow! There are a lot of them. I love the idea of riding and trying to find them...and maybe even placing one out in the desert myself at some point. My wife and friends who come out to ride our quads (4-wheelers) are interested in hunting as well. So, that's how I got my start. I am buying a Garmin GPS unit this week that I can handlebar mount on my bike or on one of our quads. Looking forward to having some fun in this hobby. Thanks. 1 Quote Link to comment

+cerberus1
Fun introduction. We know of many who found about the hobby similar, by accident/a fluke. You found the cache and signed the log, so when you figure which it is, don't forget to log it online. Have fun and cache safe. Quote Link to comment
