I'm placing a Tribute Cache at the Old A.P.E. Site and I need some help!

Hey there fellow geocachers. I'm placing a tribute cache (With Groundspeak and Moun10bike permission) at the old A.P.E. Cache site on the Iron Horse Trail, tentatively named "Mission 9: Tunnel of Light Reclaimed" . It will be a 120mm Ammo Can and as much like the original as possible. I need help mainly with two things. First I need someone who can help me with a better stencil then I've been able to make, here's a picture of the original and on the same page the Podcacher episode announcing the cache:

http://www.podcacher.com/2011/07/show-326-0-ape-and-wolf/

The second thing I could use help with is the HTML. I'm ok at it but I want to work with the HTML of the original and include it in the tribute cache and it seems to be above my skill level. Additionally I am hoping for people to possibly donate some Planet of the Apes memorabilia and maybe some activated trackables to stock the cache from day one. I have been in touch with the Land Manager and hope to get it placed by the 10 year anniversary of the original placement, 7/18/11. Thanks in advance for any help.

I've got a travel bug that was supposed to stay with the original ape cache.

It's got a photo from the film.

I found it in another cache, and since I had seen it at the ape cache I knew what it was.

I was posting for people to take it to the cache for a while, and when no one showed up I planned a trip there this summer. My first planned day fell through, luckily, or it would have been taken too. I had changed the date of my trip up there to be able to go through the open tunnel.

So I've still got it.

The owner had said I could send it back to him, but if there is a tribute cache I'm sure he'd like it there. I'll check with him on it to be sure. He's already said he's happy to have it discovered at any events.

I can help with the HTML portion.. it's something I do for a living.. I've a fair hand with Photoshop and Illustrator too, although I'm not a great graphic designer, but it sounds like you pretty much want to use the design and content from the archived page?

I can't be positive, but I seem to remember that the ape image in the stencil is copyrighted by 20th Century Fox. As I recall the story, Jeremy had to do some sweet talking to get permission to use it.

I would strongly suggest contacting Bryan a geocaching.com about that.

This is a very nice idea.

I have already received permission from Groundspeak and Moun10bike for the location and the cache idea. I will be sure to clear any copyright issues, and at the end of the day how many caches have you seen with copyrighted images on them? I personally have seen quite a few. Mostly theme caches. I'm not super concerned about 20th Century Fox coming after me for paint on the side of some army surplus.

You are correct, there have been several. It just seemed polite to let you know the backstory as I recall it.

Fair enough. Frankly I should contact Bryan, it's been way too long since I've talked to him. :)

It will be a 120mm Ammo Can and as much like the original as possible.

The original is not a 120mm can, but an 81mm can, which is wider and longer than the 120" ones but not as tall. It is easy to find 21.5"-tall 81mm cans on the Interwebs, but the ~27"-tall can used for the APE caches seem to be much harder to track down.

I appreciate the info, that throws a wrench in my plans as I thought it was the same size just different "models". I'll try and track down an 81mm while I'm waiting for Tim to get back to me. If worse comes to worse I'll put the 120mm up there temporarily while I track down the 81. Thanks for the correction Moun10bike!

If anyone happens to have access to 81mm cans please check out my post in the Garage Sale section

We were really sad, last year, when the lid of the original APE Tunnel of Light cache was stolen the day before the event. Then REALLY angered with the actual cache got stolen. Think a cache in the area is a nice idea, but just curious what makes anybody think any cache in the area isn't going to get muggled again? Just wondering. Seems like a tribute plaque like the Original Stash plaque might be a more secure idea? Just sayin'

I doubt that this replacement cache will get stolen. It will lack the APE icon and with that, the risk that it will have to be archived if taken. The thief knew that that was fate of any missing APE cache and so he targeted Mission 9 repeatedly in the last year until he succeeded. Now that there will only be a "normal" cache at the location, there is little incentive for him to make the trek up there to haul off a big ammo can. He'll likely look to other more valuable targets.

If he steals it, I will replace it. Also I plan on some nice thick chain to secure it. I don't think Groundspeak would be able to talk the Washington State Parks system into allowing a Plaque on State Park land for that. The nice thing about the original stash plaque is that, at least as I understand it, it is on private property. I only accepted the spot after Moun10bike and Groundspeak had chosen not to use the spot. So if I don't use the spot for a Tribute Cache, one of two things will happen. 1. Another Cacher will place a cache there or 2. The spot won't be used and the thief wins. I'm neutral on the first and completely against the second.

EDIT: Or more likely, what Moun10bike said. Except I hope after we get a Tribute Cache up there that people see it as more then just a "normal" cache. Although in a strictly technical sense that's exactly what it will be.

I know cachers would willingly line up and replace it every time it goes missing (well, referring to the original here)....and besides, this person has to go through a lot of effort to take it and I hear is not from here.

The original plaque can be stolen too.

:anibad: Too bad you do not have access to some nice 2" Plate Steel and a welder.

You could build a superb Cache that no one is going to walk off with. The hinges would be of Plate and the locking mechanism would be armored.

It could be the same size as the original and it would be APE Proof. <_< Even the design could be Welded in.

I'm still having issues with this thief... How can they show it off to friends? 'Dudes, check this out I stole. Look at everything that was in it.'

They must really like being Branded a THIEF & lower than Whale Doo.

This is simply amazing... :(

The act had nothing to do with possessing the container and contents. It has to do with showing that I can screw you over and get away with it and there is nothing you can do about it. I suspect they sleep quite well at night and probably feel that their actions were justified to prove their point. I'm sure they hold their head up high since few of us know the name of the suspected perp. I would like to express my true feelings towards this person but the forum vacation is not worth it.

Many security options are being discussed at the moment, whatever deterrent it ends up being I have no doubt it will be difficult for a single person to abscond with it.

Realistically, it would be difficult to convince a jury that a person who took a $15 metal container left on the side of a trail

1) knew that it belonged to someone and hadn't been abandoned,

2) intended to deprive the owner from owning that container, AND

3) that the person didn't take it in (misguided, reckless, careless) good faith.

Beyond that, it would probably be even more difficult to convince a prosecutor that pursuing such a case is worth the county's time.

Within the Geo Community there has to be numerous Artists and several talented Welders, who between them could create a Virtual Cache.

This cache could be very similar to the the Mission 9 Project A.P.E. Coin. This huge steel plate Plaque could be set in the old location. It would require a large team to place & no individual would be able to walk off with it.

Everyone would want to have their picture with it.

Just throwing another option out there as a Memorial to a great cache....
