Help! I Need To Convert Decimal Coords To Wgs84!

I have been using my GPS for a while, though am nowhere near being proficient with it.

I was given an address in decimal form (Lat 48.xxxxxxx, Lon -122.xxxxx) but I don't know how to convert that to the wgs84 format my Etrex is set for, and I don't see Decimal as an option in the "units" menu. Is one of the other formats an equivalent of the Decimal format?

Also, does anyone know of a website which will do the conversion? I've found ones which will find a location on a map based on the decimal coordinates, but I want to put it in the Etrex and make it an adventure!

Thanks,

Graig K.

edit: PS--this is time sensitive. I need to know for sure by Sunday night 8/29 for the little trip I'm taking Monday morning 8/30.

PDOP's, I skimmed that and will read it in more depth later, but what I'm looking for is more either a form I can enter Decimal coordinates into and have them converted to WGS 84, or a formula I can apply to Decimal coordinates to manually convert them.

I'd really prefer a form as I'm not a math whiz. Also, I didn't see any mention of Decimal coordinates there, or see a format demonstrated which matches the one I want to convert.

I do appreciate the help though.

These are two separate things. Datums are different than grids.

As a quick answer you can change your Etrex to display lat and long in decimal degrees and then enter the coordinates you have without having to do a conversion. You shouldn't have to touch the datum setting unless the coordinates you have specifically say that they are in another datum like NAD27

WGS84 is not a coordinate format, it is a map datum! Two different things. Your map datum should be set to WSG84.

To convert decimal degrees to degrees, minutes, decimal minutes...just times the decimals by 60 but not the whole degrees. OR just change your coordinate format to degrees, minutes, decimal minutes, and it will convert for you.

Assuming your etrex works like a legend, Go to main menu/setup/units and select the position format. Use the joy stick to go up (assuming you have Hddd mm.mmm or Hddd mm ss.s selected) until you see Hddd.ddddddd and select this. you can now enter your waypoint. The - sign in front of the Longitude indicates to use West.

Remember to set it back to Hddd mm.mmmmm for entering Geocaching Waypoints.

Hope this helps

Lord Saw nailed it.

Did he have that answer in a file, or did he wrench it from his mind? I expected a planer answer, but he knew the drill, pressed forward, and delivered a response guaranteed to socket to you. He's a clear thinker - it's obvious that no vice grips him.

Nah, just an ole texas engineer, who knows how to look something up. Ya pick up your ancient legend and punch the buttons, writing down what you do as ya go and hope the batteries still hold up because you ain't used it since ya got your new color GPSr. Ya also gotta 'member how to go back, cause ya can't 'member the correct keys

Try this link ... you will not need to change your setup in your Etrex http://www.fizzymagic.net/Geocaching/GeoCalc/GeoCalc.html
