Garmin 60cx, 76cx

This is too great! I tried to look for it on Garmin's site and everywhere else I could think of, but I see it mentioned nowhere!? Is this for real? Please say Yes.

Chance are that bass pro jumped the gun with the release date. Dealers get advanced notice on new products so that they can have time to set up catalog copy. Some companies start their catalog work as much as a year ahead of time.

As far as the price, Bass Pro is not a disounter, I am sure other sites like tiger gps will have a better price.

So... assuming that all else remains basically the same btwn the 60CS(x) and 76CS(x)... now that they potentially both have more or less unlimited memory, thereby nullifying the advantage the 76 had in that arena (115MB vs 56MB for user maps)... now which one becomes the 'better' choice?

It boils down to this.

Garmin has been paying attention to their customers and Magellen has been dropping the ball. Example; the Magellen Explorist XL looks fantastic but they have been ignoring the bugs that the rest of the Explorist line has so nobody is jumping in line to buy the XL.

Now Garmin is appearently releasing this CX model of their popular GPSr and I'll bet everybody would love to upgrade to this new Garmin receiver.

I'm in need of a GPS. was interested in the Explorist XL but not too sure because of the known bugs in the explorist line. It looks like now Garmin will be getting my business.

I already have the old Map60C GPS, and now thinking of getting the new Map60Cx GPS.

Im now wondering why the small Explorist units did not use the Transflash memory cards instead? Because those little cards would have been easier to locate inside the Explorist units, without sacraficing waterproofness much, since I remember the eMap was not very waterproof at all, with it's memory card just behind the battery, just like the Meridians. I say this because a dirty battery door seal will distroy waterproofness for these units, causing damage to the memory card and other electronics in there.

wondering if you will have to disasemble the new garmins, to get to the tiny TransFlash memory chip in there??

Hey Got GPS, I was reading the link you gave above and found this odd misspelling on the 2nd page. Freudian slip?.....

microSD

TrashFlash, formerly known as T-Flash, was introduced by SanDisk Corporation in 2004 as the world’s smallest memory card, approximately the size of a fingernail.

With the memory issue moot, it would pretty much come down to a difference in "look and feel". The 76CSX would presumable still have a better basemap (13MB vs. 8MB for the 60 series), but once you load your own maps, that is a non-issue.

That leaves the differences as:

-76 is larger and squarer

-76 button placement is above the screen

-76 floats (the 60 is boyant but doesn't float as well unless you use Li batteries).

Link to comment

So what will they doing with the internal memory of these units...? Bigger/Better basemap? More waypoints/track points? It would be sweet if they could give us 5000 waypoints and 100,000 track points and a basemap like the 76C and still have room for more goodies in firmware updates

The largest TransFlash capacity that I could find is 512MB. I was playing around with my City Select maps, and found that that is a generous amount!

I thought I'd mention the new Garmin nuvi 350 unit and it's use of SiRF technology...simply put, this unit's reception sensitivity and accuracy is really quite amazing. I can consistently pick up 5+ sats here in my house on the 1st floor (I cannot usually pick up even 1 with my 60C or Vista c) which has a metal tile roof on it. Used outdoors in a caching situation, I can see this new technology putting other handheld units to shame. The nuvi 350 has a *total* built-in memory capacity (according to Windows) of 1.87 GB & ~790 MB of free user RAM for additional maps, MP3s, JPGs etc. The pre-installed City Navigator 7 (full US coverage) takes up ~900 MB and additional sample MP3s & JPGs use up the rest. If you need more storage than this, you can also use an SD card for more. While the nuvi 350 is an automotive navigator (with a quite steep $899 price tag), I feel it's the best portable auto-nav unit out on the market, period. And if the nuvi 350 is any indication of the direction Garmin is headed with their handheld units, I'd say we're in for some really amazing GPS products in the future.

I'll second that, the Nuvi is quite a piece of work. It does seem to be missing some minor features(setup options really), but it works amazing. Just the like the M4, that sirf chip gets a signal in my garage with another floor above. And this from an auto navigation unit. I can't wait to see/buy some of Garmins new offerings with sirf and micro sd memory.

I can hardly wait. Now, is it a 60CX or a 60CSX - Bass site does not say. Something, a bit fishy (no pun) though. Bass says it has a serial (and USB) port. I doubt that. And, isn't the battery life higher than the 60CS (I thought that was like 20 hours). Great, but fishy as well. I sure hope these new devices are for real. I've been most annoyed that my 60CS has such limited memory. I live near DC and it's a constant juggling to pick a "home" map set. I like the form factor of the 60CS better than the 76's, so this will be just great.

Your 60Cs has a Serial port as well as a USB. So does my 60C. It's the round 4-prong port. I use it with my cig adapter while on road trips, or if I use a work computer w/o a USB port. Now, my 60C claims the 30 hours of normal use, while your CS says 20, so perhaps the "X" models will relect the same battery usage as the C & CS? I also can't wait for the release of these new units!

Not sure what you're finding so "fishy." The Bass Pro site lists all six models: LegendCx, VistaCx, 60Cx, 60CSx, 76Cx, and 76CSx and the specs look identical to the current corresponding ones except for the addition of the TransFlash card and the SiRF III chip instead of Garmin's own.

I agree that this was probably a premature announcement since it doesn't appear on Garmin's website yet, but it seems very likely to be real.

I played around with the product images in photoshop, and the "Vista Cx" image is an exact match of the Vista C product image (aside from resolution and photo quality), except for the product name caption at the top of the screen.

Even the caption matches perfectly, it was just moved a tiny bit to the left and an x was added.

Here are the two images overlaid with 50% transparency (other image is from the Garmin product page for Vista C here).

vistacx.jpg

I do not believe you can take two pictures that would line up this perfectly (due to imperfections in manufacturing, camera and object location, lighting, etc). So I have to conclude that it is a photoshopped Vista C image.

As for the "60cx", I could not find a corresponding 60c picture, but the map on the screen matches one of the 60c product images...

I don't know if the Vista Cx image was faked by Garmin or by Bass Pro, but it is suspicious at best. It is also possible that Garmin has indeed announced the cx release, but hadn't provided any product images, so Bass Pro engaged in some innocent creative marketing...

Let's wait and see :)

I contacted Darrell at www.tvnav.com about these units yesterday. He is an authorized Garmin dealer who is literally located right down the street from Garmins NA headquarters. He responded that it was news to him and he was contacting his sources and woiuld get back to me as soon as he heard anything. So I'll patiently wait and see.

We just got rid of our extra GPS's so I hate to buy another new one but the 60Cx would be quite tempting to me. So now where do I spend my hard earned/saved money.......60cx or personal geocoin minting. Decisions decisions.

The picture is sure "photoshopped" . GARMIN has not officially announced those "x" models, which means - nobody could made a picture from a real unit. And GARMIN strongly keeps all info confidential until official announcement (just keep checking garmin.com)

The last 5-7 years experience shows, that firs REAL units hit the market 1-3 weeks after official denouncement ( if very successful) on garmin.com , and sometimes only 2-3 month after announced on the web. Chances are - it may hit the market just before Christmas.( lets keep our thumbs...)

The important questions are:

Does TransFlash cards in GARMIN "x" models will store maps only?

Or waypoints too?

And tracklogs too? :)

I'm tired of loosing some clients just because Magellan dealers keep screaming "UNLIMITED waypoints and tracks !" . Very curious if GARMIN has learned this lesson well..... :P

Fat chance of that, below is the response Darrell at TVnav got from Garmin themselves today after my inquiry yesterday.

I got word back from Garmin that it will be announced at the CES in

Vegas in Jan. I'm not sure if BP will get them before we do or not but I'd

be surprised if we weren't a lot less expensive than BP. Thanks.

Reading this thread, I thought "Oh no... I have a brand new un-opened 60CS in a box from wife-claus in a not-so-secret cache in a closet. Reading further, I've found that the "X" models aren't really ready yet.

I have been chasing technology for years. My Canon EOS-20D digital camera will be replaced in a few months by something even better. When the new model arrives, I'll still get great pictures out of what I have.

After looking at what my son's Map60 (oh, no! grayscale) can do with 28 MB of memory, I figger the 56MB of memory in the 60CS will do fine for me. At my age, I have to stop chasing technology I can never catch and take advantage of what's available. I rarely drive more than 200 miles away from home... an advantage you younger whippersnappers might not enjoy.

In my case I had pretty much decided that I would be getting myself a new GPS only when I can get all the stuff I want into one unit (i already have several GPSrs, PDAs and a PPC). This new technology is very close to what I have been waiting for, and could be "it"; I am hoping for a way to get more info attached to each waypoint than just a long title. (OK, I admit it, as sweet as this unit is, I already want more...). Anyway, I have let Mrs StClaus know that if this product happens before christmas, that it should be on this year's wish list.

'Photoshopping' of early product pictures when new products are first introduced isn't at all uncommon since the announcements are frequently prepared before any final production models are available.

Although I hope I'm wrong, I'd be surprised if Garmin initially provides any way to store tracks/routes/waypoints on the memory cards. They have never provided that capability with previous units that used memory cards: eMap, various StreetPilots, 276, 396, etc.

However, they have been receptive in the past to customer requests for features that can be provided as firmware upgrades, so I'm hopeful that such capabilities will be there eventually.

Noticed that Bass Pro Shop is listing Garmin 60 & 76 C(S)x models that are similar to the corresponding current ones but with the Sirf III GPS chip and a TransFlash memory card.

Peter, thanks for digging this up. Even with all the bugs, I'm in need of a device, and was close to pulling the trigger on the eXplorist line. It burned me as I felt the form factor of the Garmin models is slicker. The 'navigation pad' is soooo much nicer than the 'navigation stick' on the eXplorist series. It also killed me to support Magellan given their lack of support to the known issues. Instead of fixing the bugs, they pushed another model (XL) to market.....

It would appear that Garmin has been listening and is responding. As such, I'm more than happy to shell out the 400+ for this device (60CSx).

well i emailed garmin about it's new 60cx series and this is what they emailed me back with..

Dear Kevin,

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. Unfortunately, I do not have

any information regarding a new GPSMAP60 unit that may come available in the

future. We here at Garmin can not talk about new items that will be released

in the future due to being a traded company. We are a traded company on the

New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ and other great stock markets worldwide.

This information would be considered insider trading. As new items come

available you can find these on our website at www.Garmin.com. Thank you for

your understanding. Have a great day!"

I replied and told them that they might want to ask the bass pro shop to remove it from their online site... I also told them I'd be glad to test out any of their upcomming models! ;)

For what it's worth.

I emailed Bass Pro and told them I was interested in the Garmin GPS Map 60CX that was listed on there web site. I asked them when it would be available in their stores and this was their reply:

Jeff,

Thank you for contacting Bass Pro Shops online. We appreciate your business.

The Garmin GPS Map 60CX is due in our warehouse the 1st week of December, we do not know when the retail stores would

be receiving this item. Unless you are going for other shopping, you may want to call ahead for availability.

Please keep us in mind for all your sporting needs.

The damage is already done, so I do not see the reason to remove the ad :ninja:

I'm very surprised that the ad is still up on the Bass Pro website. I'm sure Garmin doesn't want anything to cut into their Christmas season sales of existing units when they're not yet ready to ship the new versions.

Yes, the damage is done from the standpoint of customers who read forums like this one and the sci.geo.satellite-nav newsgroup, but I suspect that's a pretty small percentage of the potential GPS customers.

As fara as a time frame for these new units making it to the dealers. In the past Garmin has always waited for industry trade shows before dealers could even place an order. The first of these shows are Outdoor Retailer in Salt lake city, the Shot show hunting industry show and the CES in Las Vegas. O.R. and the shot show are in January, I am not sure when CES is held, that is not a show that I have attended.

Garmin and Magellen both tend to be late with shipping new products, that is why when they list a release date they will list a quarter rather than a month. In the past the items they have displayed at the winter shows have not made it to the dealers until May or June, sometimes in August.
