multi caches...how?! (sorry - newbie!)

Sorry as I'm sure this has been asked hundreds of times, but I can't figure it out or find the answer!

 

Today I did all 4 waypoints for a multicache but having found waypoint 4 I kind of expected the app on my iphone to then know I'd found all 4 and direct me to the cache, but it didn't...there must be a way of doing this to find the final coordinates that doesn't involve pen and paper? Or do I need to use pen and paper?

You didn't mention which app or which phone, so I'll just point you to the Help Center - Apps section. You're looking for how to create an addtiional waypoint, then edit that waypoint, etc, etc.

You also don't mention whether the multicache in question had more than 4 stages (waypoints). Typically, you should only log a "found it" for the final stage, which should have a log book to sign.

If you found a tag with coordinates at each stage, you'd create each new waypoint as Pup Patrol mentioned. If instead there are some calculations, you'll need to do those yourself, then create the waypoints based on the solutions. There are separate Apps where you can write notes and draw. But I keep a small notebook, and write the clues as I go.

I will carry a small calculator, as well as the notebook and pen/pencil. Just can't trust my adding abilities while being attacked by mosquitoes and blackflies.

My confusion is, how did you find the first 4 stages of a multi without having to enter the coordinates to the next stage? Normally on a multi cache you only get the coordinates to the first stage, then at the first stage you will find the coordinates to the second stage, etc., etc.....

 

Or was it a Puzzle cache where the 4 waypoints are provided and you have to gather some information in the field at those locations to decipher the coordinates to the final?

OK, let's think about this logically for a minute....If all I have to do to receive the final coordinates is mark the first 4 stages found (whether I actually found them or not), then why would I bother finding the other 4 stages?

 

What's the GC number of the cache in question? Maybe we can help you figure out what you need to do.

You must have the app for making notes, surely?

 

Otherwise it's good old pen/pencil and paper.

(Anyway, you need a pen/pencil in case there isn't one in the cache! )

I understand the concept (in fact I own a cache much like you describe), but I've always considered that a Puzzle type. To me if you simply go to the first stage, receive the coordinates to the second stage, go to second stage, receive coordinates to third stage, etc., that's a Multi. If you have to gather some information at each stage and plug those numbers into a formula or calculation to discover the final coordinates, I would consider that a Puzzle.

 

Maybe it's a regional thing, I don't know. That's why I asked the OP to provide the GC code so we can figure out just exactly which sort of cache this is.

Hi everyone and thank you, I think I figured out I do need to make my own notes - I tried an easy puzzle type today (ffailed again but figured out how to create a waypoint now I hope, will try again!)

It confused me as I could navigate from one point to the next within the app so thought the app might recognise I'd done all 4 and show me the cache location, but obviously not that sophisticated! I'm on an iPhone.

OK, I see now....some would consider that a multi, others would consider that a puzzle (since the coordinates of the 4 stages are provided, and you gather information there (the orienteering control stations) to figure out the final coordinates.

 

But as I said, the app doesn't know whether you actually visited those stations or not. You'll have to calculate the final coordinates using the numbers you found at the 4 orienteering control stations.
