I think MORE ABOUT Groundspeak is a sort of magazine about geocaching.

Anyone with photos or stories pertaining to any aspect of geocaching is welcome to publish them here. If you have difficulties posting photos, or would just rather remain anonymous, please email me through Groundspeak. I will send my email address and you can send me photos, stories, links, etc. bad_boy_a.gif

I'd subscribe real money to a paper magazine version! (I just hate glossies)...

I'd also be willing to pay a little per month to subscribe to an online zine (to help hosting costs), but it'd have to be as good as a paper mag...

If this actually gets going, let me know - or advertise and I'll see it.

Very cool idea, good luck!

( I have no actual skills to offer ;) )

I had sent an email to Groundspeak about this and they were supposed to get back to me. However that was about the time the fourms collapsed. I'll re contact them. We really need their help if we want to get this widely distributed.

I have been contacted by several people that are anxious to help. They are writters and web designers. It would be nice to have a writer from each area.

There are still several things that need to be considered and worked out.

Hang in there and maybe we can get this kicked off soon.

For now we are talking about an online news letter. Although a paper is not out of the question. However it would have a substantial start up cost. If the online goes well and people want a paid subscription to a paper one, then I'm sure it could be worked out.

BTW Woodsters, I got your email along with several others. I was adding them to my buddy list in order to start a private topic when the fourms went down. Of course as it stands now we can't do a private anymore. Just hang in there, I'm waiting to hear from GC on this.

Caching Life Magazine has been a part of our geocaching website for a year, and has been a fun way to relate our geocaching adventures and share my love of photography.

NavDog,

:) Very nicely done! :( I have bookmarked it and look forwrad to a bigger amount of time to really take in the content. The few clicks I did certainly has whet my appetite!

I have seen many personal websites, and wondered what was the real point there? I have often been tempted to make one, too. In fact, I did make one, or two, :P or three. I never really liked any of them. You have here a REAL reason to have a personal webpage. The talent behind it sure helps, too. :P

Speaking as someone who's in the magazine/comic publishing biz I can tell you it's one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. Been doing this fulltime since 1990.

Finding an audience is always the tuff part when starting up. Sounds like you have good start.

Online publishing is a great option. But you shouldn't rule out pdfs. Sometimes it's nice to simply download a magazine, throw it on your laptop (or print it out) and take it with you. Pdfs are nice because each file is a specific issue that's fixed (like a real magazine). This allows you to save them and go back and refer to old issues. Web-based magazines tend to be in a constant state of change. (which may be a good thing or a bad thing -- depending on your views).

As an editor, I like Pdfs because no web master skills are need. They can be layed out and organized exactly like a traditional paper magazine (using Quark or InDesign) and they tend to have the same look and feel of a paper-rag.

I know one thing if the magazine had a "geobabe of the month" I'd subscribe

---------------------------
Phase 1: Collect Underpants, Phase 2: ???, Phase 3: Profit

Jason you perv.

While there are lots of cachers compared to a couple of years ago we still don't have nearly enough to support a regular magazine. A few thousand cachers can't justify publishing a mag.

I hope we don't get much bigger.

The concept of a magazine sounds great. Last time I was in the bookstore, I was thinking about when someone might do this, or perhaps even write a book about geocaching. I suspect there is a market.

If there is a magazine, will it allow for 'related topics,' such as 'what kind of beer do geocachers like to drink,' 'what is your favorite geocaching related joke,' etc.?

:P

Why do you hope we don't get much bigger. I would love to see Geocaching grow for a multitude of reasons. Also, I think a "few" thousand in a very lowball number. Now, I'm not in the "biz" but let me make an assumption (feel free to fill me in if I'm wrong). Let's say that there are only 100,000 cachers (I'm rather certain this is way low) and only 10% of them cough up $2 for a monthly issue, that brings us to 20k month. Would this cover an online monthly publication?

IMO a magazine/newsletter should be designed as a potentially profitable entity, but should not cost subscribers.

Advertising can, and should pay the way.

It should be constructed on a website outside of this one, but hopefully could be linked to this and other caching-related sites.

That is how to get readers.

Readers=advertising potential.

The editorial policy of the publication should be independant of any other geocaching sites. :P

While a website would look much better I think that a true paper edition should not be ruled out. I get the NTCA magazine each month which is distributed to only about 600 people. It is a simple looking publication in black & white only. And most pictures don't look much better than a photocopy (which I guess leaves out a geobabe of the month) but it contains many articles and advertisements. I think a publication like it could eventually build into a larger better looking magazine as it builds a subscriber base. My name sugestion National Geocacher
