Best GPS for multi caches

Been searching the forum but not really finding what I need.

So, I am in the market for a new gps. Sold my Garmin Dakota 20.

My main issue is multi geocaches. I am looking for a gps which can handle the child waypoints, in the Dakota 20 I had to enter them manually.

Touchscreen would be my preference also it needs to be sold in the Netherlands.

Maps for hiking would be great wether they are open source or sold.

you're going to be disappointed in this realm. ALL GPS units require you to enter the next stage manually.

The Monterra recognizes child waypoints and adds them automatically to the right cache.

Since this is the latest model, I assume that all future models will support this feature.

That is really interesting and great to hear. There was a very recent discussion about wanting that feature and nobody came in and said it was already available. If we were really lucky, they would add it to existing units....

A Multi cache might be arranged thus:

goto WPT1 and find the number on the tree

goto WPT2 and count the number of rails on the gate.

...

goto WPTx and get the telephone number

put all the numbers into a formula to get the co-ords of the container.

Each of the WPTs will be listed as a child waypoint on the cache page. These child waypoints will be downloaded with the GPX or PQ file, they can also be uploaded to the GPS, and will apear on the GPS as waypoints HOWEVER up to now the GPSs didn't link the waypoints to the cache, so in order to navigate to each waypoint you would have to stop navigating to the cache and manually choose the waypoint. I think what the OP is looking for (and what has been discussed recently on another thread) is that there should be an option when searching for a particular cache to select the next child waypoint and it will direct you there. It sounds like the Monterra may do this.

Where this is more often helpful is parking coordinates. Being able to chose a cache and navigate to the parking coordinates and then go right back to navigating to the cache would be very handy. When you have thousands of caches on the device, you get hundred of child waypoints and there is no simple way to know which child waypoints go with which caches.

However, since you'd like a touch screen, I suggest a Garmin Oregon 600.

He is telling about multis that have various points as part of the file. Not all multistage caches require entry some have the places to go and FSN be accessed from the device

What exactly are child waypoints and what do they have to do with a multi ?

"Child waypoint" is GSAK lingo. Groundspeak calls them "Additional Waypoints".

The Monterra shows them linked to the belonging cache:

That way they'll work the same way like the well known "Next Step" function from Oregon and Montana units.

Once I load them into a GSAK database and then transfer them to my Montana, it displays all the waypoints as well. I honestly can't remember if my 60CSx did it or not. That way, I can select the parking icon and drive to the suggested parking coordinates to begin the hike/paddle/whatever to get to the next waypoint, be it a stage, a reference point, etc...
