+Bicycle Repairman
Hi all. Does anyone know of a decent piece of software that will enable me to view the Garmin img map (eg. gmapsupp.img) files with? I have tried several different pieces of software but I haven't yet found one that works. Any suggestions? Cheers. Edited October 21, 2009 by Bicycle Repairman Quote Link to comment

Bob Morphew
MapEdit will NOT open Garmin img files if they are for "NT" maps i.e. City Navigator NT 2008. It seems to open all the other Garmin img files I've tried. Bob Quote Link to comment
+fegan
This free program called GPSMapEdit will do it. Won't open a file over 2GB, so it won't open gmapprom.img from a Colorado 400t. Quote Link to comment
+RangerR47
This free program called GPSMapEdit will do it. Won't open a file over 2GB, so it won't open gmapprom.img from a Colorado 400t. I tried to use this yesterday to open any of my img files and none of them would work. Only 1 is over 2g...not sure what was up, but I tried 2 different SD cards with img files on them and not 1 would open. I tried some other software as well, forgot what it was, but it didnt work either. I only gave it about 30min worth of trying and had other things to do so I stopped trying. Hard to believe its this hard to find something to open these up. Quote Link to comment
+Red90
You can't open a gmapsupp.img directly as it is an agglomeration of small IMG files. You need to first break it up into the small files. There is a program that does that for you called "gmaptool". Google it..... Note that GPSMapedit will not open locked maps on purpose to avoid copyright issues. http://www.geopainting.com/en/limitations.html 7. Garmin MapSource IMG * Locked maps are not supported. * Labels coding scheme N7 is not supported. * House numbering is not supported. * NT format is not supported. * BlueChart is not supported. Bob Morphew
Red90 - I can open my gmapsupp.img in MapEdit - guess it depends on what's in the mapset. Quite often when you open a garmin img file in MapEdit, the screen wll remain blank. Use the View/Levels/Level 0 option and you'll see your map (if it was able to be opened. Bob Morphew
Red90 - I can open my gmapsupp.img in MapEdit - guess it depends on what's in the mapset. .... Update: I decided to try the latest Mapedit V1.0.60.0 and found that it no longer directly opens the Garmin img files - I get the message Red90 referred to "The file is a container .... etc" and you need to select one of the maps within the full mapset. You can select all of them if you want, however there is no need to use additional tools to separate the individual maps - Mapedit V1.0.60.0 does it for you. I've been running V1.0.40.4 for a couple of years and didn't update as it did all that I needed. When I try to open any Garmin img file, it just opens. Look like they changed that in newer releases, hence our different comments. Bob Quote Link to comment
+Timred
hey guys ! Its been a while since I've needed any help, but I am in a bind. We are heading up north on Wednesday, and plan on doing a bit of caching on our 10 hour drive. So today I go to load up some maps from MapSource, and I get an error message telling me that I need to reinstall. After many many re-install, and after installing the trainer app, and then trying Mapsource again, I can get it to happen. I have many great maps, but cant get them loaded. It is so darned frustrating, and Garmin is no help via websites... I have tried mapedit, which loads the maps, but I dont get any detail on them. I am able to get counties, but no streets. I will assume that you pro's will be able to help get these darned maps loaded. Also, how do I get maps from computer to GPS unit in mapedit? Thanks in advance for your help Quote Link to comment

+Timred
What your problem is is not clear. I do not understand what you are asking. Basically, Mapsource cant be launched on my computer any longer. I have tried to install, re-install, and reboot many times over. I had so many great waypoints and caches that are now lost. I would like to know if anyone might have a solution. First, the error messaged stated that there was an error in Mapsource, and that I should re-intall the program. I did, and it was still giving me the same messages. I then downloaded Mapsource off the Garmin website, re-installed, and the same thing happened. I installed the "Training Center 345" from Garmin, in hopes that I would then be able to install Mapsource again and have it launch, but it keeps giving me error messages stating that Product#2 did not install correctly, whatever that means. I then installed Mapedit, and I was able to load in maps into Mapedit. However, the street maps I have only load up to major highways, instead of streets. And the topo maps I have load up, but with no elevation markers... Confusing and frustrating to say the least. -Tim Quote Link to comment

Get MapSetToolkit and see it there is a map installed with the listing of "Product#2" uninstall it and then try MapSource again. Quote Link to comment
Bob Morphew
... Basically, Mapsource cant be launched on my computer any longer. I have tried to install, re-install, and reboot many times over. I had so many great waypoints and caches that are now lost. I would like to know if anyone might have a solution. That error message usually means there is an incorrect Registry entry for one of your maps. Re-installing Mapsource will NOT solve the problem. You need to fix the Registry error. Unless you really understand the Registry system that Mapsource uses, do NOT try to edit the Registry. Download a free copy of MapsetToolkit (http://cypherman1.googlepages.com/home) and look for the "Check Registry" button. Review the errors it reports and it should tell you which map is causing the problem. Use the "Uninstall" button to remove the problem map(s). Mapsource will run if MapsetToolkit reports zero errors. If you don't know how to fix the problem, do the above steps and make notes of the problems and report back here. Bob Quote Link to comment

I did have an error with a large map. I uninstalled it, and was able to launch Mapsource. But...I tried to re-convert the large map again, and ran into many problems. So I decided to break the large map into many smaller maps, and had limited success. I ran into problems with cgpsmapper, but I was able to pinpoint the .IMG files that I needed and created an entire map of the region I frequent most. I will try to tackle the larger problems later, but for now, I am able to load my maps A-OK ! Thanks again Timred Quote Link to comment
