Garmin Oregon 650 no longer shows caches.

Recommended Posts

My GPSr has stopped showing any geocaches, so I have searched about this many times now, and most comment on the filter settings. I can't seem to even get to any filter settings to change them, I just get a screen that states "no geocaches found". So today (trying once again) I loaded one geocache, then looked in The file explorer and can see it in the device's files. I then unplug the device and start it, only to be shown the "no geocaches found" so I look at the map and notice that this cache has a child waypoint that is showing just fine that came from that GPX file. Grrrrr!!! Please someone help me out here.

The distance looks OK. One issue is that caches far away are not automatically listed. I think that's not the issue.

Maybe it is a filter. They are a little tricky, but you could start with this:

Select the Geocaching icon (treasure chest)

Tap the filter option (top right, the funnel)

See if any icons are dark or greyed-out.

Tap the "Saved Filter" icon in the bottom right corner of that screen.

Tap "Show All".

I think you said you checked that, but there it is, just in case. It is super easy to accidentally change settings. Sometimes I wonder if the 6XX sets them itself. :anibad:

Try renaming the {device}\Garmin\SQL\ directory to something like "SQL-old" and then reboot the device, and wait for it to rebuild its database.

Wow thanks Atlas Cached, That worked like a charm! That's the first time I saw that suggested. What exactly did that do anyway? I'm guessing I can now delete the SQL-old file now.

Yes, you can delete the "old" folder once you have confirmed everything is working properly for you now 8^)

I hope you can help me. I have the same screen come up on my Garmin since the day I received it for Christmas. No matter what I do, I can't get it to find Geocaching web page.

You must first place GPX files onto the Oregon. For example, the picture shows one GPX cache file, GC644K7.GPX. Are there files in the Garmin/GPX folder?

If you have placed some files, yet nothing shows up, please review this thread. There are several possibilities.

The photo you see above is not my GPS. The GPX for mine are my waypoints, tracks and stuff, I have enter manually. I have never added a Geocache wirelessly or threw Geocaching.com. Basecamp will not load onto my computer. Am I just doomed to always enter caches myself? It can't find our ipad when I search for it.

When someone suggested to rename the directory, I am not sure where that is.

I really need to be lead step by step with this. I hope you can please help.

You are a premium member. You can download the GPX files from the cache page (GPX file box) or download pocket queries. In both cases, connect the GPS to a computer and copy the GPX file to the Garmin/GPX directory on it.

You can't add directly from the website or connect to an iPad with an Oregon 650. You must download from the website and copy the file to the GPS.

Your problem is completely different from the OP's problem. You haven't yet loaded the cache files, therefore you won't see caches listed.

Here's a thread to discuss how to load Garmin GPSr, and where to get GPX files:

http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=340902&view=findpost&p=5604059

You can find the steps there. I'd suggest that you read about Pocket Queries (link is in that thread). You can make a Pocket Query of 1000 caches at once. If the center point is where you live, you may load miles of caches in all directions. It's easy to do, easy to update (the info changes after time), and easy to load. But you must read the instruction, and don't skip any steps.

For now, you can save one file at a time by clicking the GPX File button on any cache page, select "Save As", and save it into the /Garmin/GPX folder of your GPSr. The steps are in the thread.

So we can't down load directly from the site anymore?

You can download through a browser and a computer. I was meaning "directly" from the internet to the device, which you CAN do with an Oregon 750. If you are referring to the "Send to my GPS" button, it does not work currently, but is supposed to be fixed this week.

:anibad:

Thanks for the advice. I tried everything in the above posts, but this is the one that got me going again. Somehow my filter was only showing 1/1 caches. I reset it to show all and now it works again!

...and now that it has happened more than once, I can conclude that it is far to easy to inadvertently change settings when a touch screen GPSr is in your pocket.

Hi Atlas Cached, I have a similar problem.  My Garmin Oregon 650 Geocache results page shows "No Results Found" and "Try Adjusting Search Parameters".

I first tried to Reset All Settings by: 1) Turn on my Oregon 650, 2) Select Setup, 3) Select Reset (2nd choice from the bottom), 4) Select Reset All Settings, 5) Reset
I saw this procedure in a GPS City tutorial video in You Tube.

When I load GPX files to my Oregon 650, I first select to load the GPX file from the Geocaching.com Geocache Window.  They appear in my laptop's Downloads Folder.  I drag them into the GPX Folder (By dragging and highlighting GPX and release the mouse button).  I checked the 650's GPX folder and found the Geocache GPX files are loaded in the  GPX folder and not under Nav, as would be shown in my Garmin eTrex 30.  When I go to select the Geocache Treasure Chest in the 650, I receive an error message "No results Found".  I performed the SQL rename to SQL-old as you recommended for SDKonkle above.  After that, I still had the same error message.   Within the Oregon 650, I dragged the GPX files from the GPX folder into the GPX Nav Folder.    Same result.  Will you please help me fix this trouble?

Has your Garman Oregon always worked fine until now? Have you tried the other ideas in this thread?

Your troubleshooting idea seems to be arbitrary, random. GPX files are placed into the GPX folder, not "Nav".

If you take a look at GPSrChive > Oregon 6xx > Function > Files and Folders, you will see that the 'GPX\Nav' directory is used for "recent navigation destinations'.

I suggest removing all GPX files from your GPSr, rename the SQL directory (again), reboot the device with no GPX files, then reconnect, add a few local GPX geocache files to the 'Garmin\GPX\' directory, reboot, and then open the geocaching app and selecting the 'Show All' filter. Also, make sure, under Geocache Filters Status you have 'Unattempted' and 'Did Not Find' enabled.

Have you checked your filters? Turn on your Oregon 650, select geocaching, select the funnel icon at the top of the screen, and then the filter and folder at the bottom right of the screen. This brings up a list of pre-defined filters. Select "Show All."

Also, how far away are these caches from where you are now? If they're farther than 100 miles, they won't show up in the list. They'd still be visible if you do a search based around a closer location or if you look on the map.

+1

Also the GPS needs to have determined its correct location, which can require a few minutes depending on how far it moved since its last fix.  That has happened to me a couple of times; I load a bunch of caches just fine, travel far to my new hunting grounds, and VIOLA!  No caches... until the GPS eventually figures out where it is.  And then the same thing happens when I return home.

But I won't get fooled like that anymore.  Nope.  I'm on it. :anicute:

No problems until just recently.  I just reread several of the posts.  I find that with this Oregon in my pocket I butt dial changes I did not knowingly select.

Gee thanks.  I came in here because I wanted to learn to resolve this problem.  I did it step by step as was previously suggested to the first guy.

I wrote down what I did following the previously posted suggestions.

I know that GPX files are to be added to the GPX folder.  In my Garmin eTrex30 I copy GPX files into the GPX Folder.  When I open the GPX folder the files are always in the subfolder "Nav".  I thought that was where they would be in the Oregon but they are not there.

Thanks Atlas Cached.  I will try that this weekend.  What is meant by GPSr?

When you put the unit in your pocket, make sure to turn off the screen and you won't be able to make "butt dial" changes. You don't have to turn off the GPS, just the screen.

The use of the term "GPSr," which is "GPS receiver," distinguishes your handheld from the actual Global Positioning System. If I said "my GPS", technically, I would be suggesting that I have my very own set of satellites, even though most would understand that I meant my handheld.

Even though most people probably don't care, others (myself included) try to be accurate in their writings.
