HEARTLAND STATE SURVEY MARKS

Has any one logged one and posted a photo of a SS mark in Nebraska?

There do not seem to be as many of these set during the Depression as I would have thought. North Dakota has only two obvious ones. Oregon may have the most, with Wyoming next and a few float to the top with a GSAK filter in Nebraska - a couple of which were set as new surface marks over 1898 bottles.

There are quite a few suspect ones that do not filter for CGS+SS or STATE SURVEY that were placed by NEGS with a numerical name and unknown setting date (GSAK will return the first date in the history for UNK's). Some of the SS marks that I recovered in Wyo last fall did not have any text in the Data Sheet that indicated such.

If I can get a glimmer of hope that Nebraska might be the same I would go visit my daughter.

Thanks, kayakbird

Mike,

Are you talking about about the WPA State Survey Markers?

If so, here is some information for you.

Thanks Kurt,

Jerry's No. 66 sure seems to fit my suspect parameters above; and in the photo the distances to WP, fence and RR would fit the description for

MK1600 DESIGNATION - 66

MK1600_STAMPING: 66

MK1600 HISTORY - UNK MONUMENTED NEGS

The DS does not indicate 'STATE SURVEY' or CGS+SS. It was recovered, but not GC logged by (JDB)on 12 May 2010 with no notation of the type of disk (I didn't think to add that information to the three without the wording in the DS that I recovered near Laramie, Wyo last fall either).

Of the 470 set in Nebraska, there are less than 50 maybes with PID's. It appears that some non-published SS marks were used for RM and AZ marks. Designation numbers set by NEGS start at 61 and go up to 635. CGS was the setting agency for two that do have the wording:

MK1240 DESIGNATION - STATION 64 NOTE-- GEODITIC SURVEY AND STATE SURVEY;

ML0701_STAMPING: 661 NORTH OF THE NORTH RAIL OF THE MAIN TRACK. A STATE SURVEY STANDARD DISK, STAMPED 661.

No STATE SURVEY marks in Nebraska have been logged into GC. Maybe good for an early summer road trip. (MEL)

HEARTLAND CGS+SS AUG 11

They got no respect!

North Dakota - Accidentally recovered two years ago, 1 FOUND & 1 NOT FOUND, the only two with PID's and did not do any additional GSAK filtering for this trip.

Minnesota - Nine filter out after purging a few that appear to be MNDOT marks that use the term 'STATE SURVEY'. Three have NOT FOUND recoveries, one described by USGS in 1966 but uncertain if it was actually recovered. One has lengthy history as it was recovered GOOD in 1967, 1979 twice and 1986. In 2005 it was recovered as NOT Found because the CGS+SS disk had been replaced with a MDOT disk. This leaves four, three of which have photos logged in Geocache.

Two NONPID's RM 3 & 4 in the LESTER RIVER (1871 USLS & 1952 CGS) complex. I believe that these two were set in 1934 but never tied in to anything.

USLS 1871

C 4 RESET 1970

Can't tell from the DS if this one was reset in place, reused from some place else, a pre-cast post finally put in the ground; or maybe one set in 1934 but not tied to at that time.

The remaining one, HOW 1 PID# ON0930 was described in 1961 (maybe first surveyed then) as dated 1934 and looks very promising on Google Earth.

SOUTH DAKOTA

About 30 filter out. Twelve are NOT FOUND (all six of a 1934 alpha 24 string), 1 no history, two that appear to have been unused precast posts that were later set as RM's, five of nine in the ## A string were found good in 1962 (none of which are logged) and half dozen or so have been seen since 1958.

Ten are logged in Geocache. One NOT FOUND, one RM's only for a broken and replaced post (quasi BOGUS) and one that is high on the list of BOGUS queens because the errors slop over to a same named neighbor. I found all three that I looked for on this too fast trip. What I really wanted out of SD were original MAGNETIC STATION disks - all five that I looked for were NOT FOUND or RESET.

Preliminary research for Oregon 'STATE SURVEY MARKS' (1933-34 CGS+SS):

109 PID's, 15 or so associated with TRI STATIONS, 38 with recent activity (NGS History or GEOCAC log), 19 GEO logged with a photo,

PHOTO BELONGS WITH QB0888 ACROSS THE ROAD

cc450b9e-63ba-46ca-ad9e-4e3d495d15c7.jpg

and four GEO DESTROYED (?).

There appears to be 34 standard A trough Z numerical strings, most of which have only one ALPHA name, but '277' has thirteen. These numeric strings pin on GE in geographic areas and I think that there is a high likelihood of finding NONPID missing letters in sequence. Apparently E 218, whose NONPID cousin A 218 in another thread started all this, needs to be found and have a new description written for it since the original belonged to a mark in New York State.

Now to plan a Birding/BMing trip out west! MEL

OREGON STATE SURVEY DISK UPDATE

I was a tad disappointed yesterday afternoon when I crossed The Narrows bridge on OR 205 about 25 mi south of Burns and realized that at the current elevation of Mud Lake the only CGS+SS mark to float to the top in Harney County with a GSAK 'AND STATE SURVEY' filter is about five feet under water. An unexpected Snowy Owl, reported by other participants in the John Scharff Migratory Bird Festival earlier that morning, was seen and made the drive south worthwhile. Also had a few 1934 marks hi-graded out and pinned on GE - standard methodology: GSAK > Excel-sorted in string order > DSWORLD and a very good Verizon air-card connection to Toshiba laptop and GPS not uploaded.

Got a pleasant surprise at the first stop northbound.

X 320 1934

The landowner came by and was glad to learn the history of the short lived State Survey Public Works Project.

The next one north PA0181, in the 314 string, was another CGS+SS

a0da2eff-6dc9-4028-ba01-e6710532f5ed.jpg

so now I was committed to working this string all the way back to Burns. Ten founds and three not founds, all CGS+SS, finished the day at

B 314 1934 CGS+SS

285fe484-3080-46aa-a071-0784675fe84b.jpg

and now I really would like to spend another day to see if the 320 string is all CGS+SS, but the 1904 PLN run from Pendleton back to Idaho is calling.

The day did produce a 'Mystery Mark':

PA0419 HISTORY - 1959 MARK NOT FOUND ORDT

PA0419 HISTORY - 19860411 MARK NOT FOUND USPSQD

but the original disk and/or post appears to have been resurrected/renewed/reused as

PA0420 DESIGNATION - V 314 RESET

PA0420 HISTORY - 1961 MONUMENTED ORDT

PA0420 HISTORY - 1961 GOOD ORDT

Note that the DS stamping does not match the photo (in fact, none of the founds in this sting had the added four digit number stamped).

Hey guys, I love finding the older marks in the area. Can someone tell me how you are finding these (publication?) and whether or not it dipped down to Arkansas/Oklahoma? I know of a mag station line that has been very hard to find any of them (we've found 1 with a ton more MIA at this point) but not much else.

thanks!

Ashallond,

If you are wanting to look for the 1930's short termed Public Works Projects with the cast letters 'AND STATE SURVEY' do a GSAK full text filter for that term and also 'CGS+SS'. This may not pull them all up, as I discovered for a second time in Oregon a couple of days ago:

K 299 This 299 string did not filter out, but three SS disks were found and I suspect that all of it, and maybe adjacent strings, are all SS.

Finished my road trip swing through Oregon with one more that did filter; the previously logged Y 310. kayakbird

Using up a bit of winter wind-bound time to sort out a few interesting targets for an upcoming road trip to the Seattle area; and of course had to work on 'Coast & Geodetic and State Survey' marks in Washington State. Potential appears to be slim to almost none.

GSAK pulls up six in Eastern Washington with a CGS+SS filter - two are dated 1931 (one of which has a very poor photo that seems to show that date Note added 21 Feb 13 - gotta be glad that this logger lost his cell phone camera!!), two dated 1946, one good GeoLog photo

CLERICAL ERROR - NOT CGS+SS

dbf4916a-bc9f-4d20-9e33-e89d8e12e9d9.jpg

& one too poor to read - and two from 1933 with recent NGS recoveries, but no photos. Proper date would have to be 1933 or 1934.

In the Greater Seattle area 47 have designations that look suspicious, but only 9 PID's filter out with 'AND STATE SURVEY' - four of these because that term is used in the description of an RO for another mark. None of the 47 have the expected setting date of 1933-34 because all placed dates are listed as UNK and a glitch in GSAK defaults to the first HISTORY line with an actual date.

So the bottom line is that there may be only a single recoverable CGS + STATE SURVEY benchmark in Washington State,

STATE SURVEY IN WASH STATE

3364ce62-bc2c-48c8-8e89-bf49ea3d2436.jpg

and it does not filter out! It is an RO for a nearby station and its RM 1. kayakbird

Thanks - just what i needed - yet another type of mark to go looking for.

I don't use gsak - so would anyone who knows how to look quickly and easily try to see if there are some of these marks in WV?

Any info would be a appreciated.

GREAT finds kayakbird!

frex3wv,

If you are using a sortable database float together the marks that were placed by your State Geodetic Service together and look for 1933-34 (or UNK) dated marks that seem to have similar names? Search those Data Sheets for the terms CGS+SS and/or AND STATE SURVEY.

Drop the PID's that you find into DSWorld and scroll through the Geocache: Recovery (bad terminology) to see if anyone has posted a picture with their log.

Happy Hunting. MEL
