How do I put a street address into a 64ST?

Recommended Posts

As a recent retiree I've taken up this great new hobby. I used my smart phone for the first couple of months but figured it was time to upgrade so I moved up to a GPSMAP 64st. Now, maybe I oversimplified the ability of this unit, but I assumed I could put in a street address like I can my Garmin nuvi. No voice directions, traffic, or even street by street directions I accept but can't I even put in a street name to be taken to a general area? I added OpenMapChest US street map and I can peruse my 64 looking at my current location (i.e. home neighborhood) along with the layout and names of all the streets surrounding me. Yet I cannot figure out how to put an address into this thing. I have played with the various menus and it asks street #, name, city and then always says no such address found. As an example, I see myself sitting in my house on Lydia, in Saginaw, MI...my gps shows my street's name on the map and all surrounding streets. Yet when I try to put in route planner/create route/select first point/addresses the unit asks for country, city, street number & then will not accept the street name Lydia nor any other street name.

The unit works great for caching but how do I get it to work even half as well as a regular navigator for car use?

So even though the default Garmin map by itself, not even counting the additional Open chest street map, both show a map of the various streets, by name, of my neighborhood and/or city there is no way to input those same street names into the gps and have it guide me there? It just sounds strange that I can see it show me "Main St.", by name, on a map of Anytown, USA but it won't tell me how to get there or let me type in the same name that is appearing there on my screen.

Open Street Map does have routing capabilities. And your GPSMAP 64st should work with it -- mine did, at least. Not sure what the "Open Chest Street Map" you mentioned is, but Open Street Map is what you want:

Be sure to pick the "routable" map for your area and download it. Then you can use Garmin's free "Map Install" and "Map Manager" software to first install the map set on your computer, then install it to your GPS.

The base map on the 64s or 64st is not routable. Therefore the streets are just drawn as part of the map, but are not part of the POI database. You will need a routable map WITH address information. Open Street Map is routable, as noted above, but in the US, address information is spotty at best and altogether lacking in most cities and towns. You might find that purchasing City Navigator NA would fulfill your needs better. In other places (Europe, for example), the level of detail in OSM is much better and address searching is better supported.

Open Street Map is a community contributed mapping project, similar to Wikipedia as a general knowledge base. Unfortunately the US community isn't as active as the European community. But if you find something missing, you can always add it to the map.
