+Miner_85
The Geocaching App. for the iPhone, Android, and other SmartPhones provides for searching for "Nearby Caches". Does anyone know of a hand-held GPSR that can use this feature? I use this App. ( with my iPhone ) on occasion and find it particularly useful when traveling far afield from my home computer. The "problem" when using this App. with the iPhone is one of power consumption - at best maybe an hour or two and the iPhone's battery is drained ! Yes, I could take a laptop along and get the same information, but find it bulky and cumbersome. A true GPSR that could utilize this feature would really be great ! Quote Link to comment
+pppingme
Any GPS receiver should be able to do this as well, but only with pre-loaded waypoints (caches). If you're looking for a gps receiver with online capabilities, thats what your smart phone is for. Quote Link to comment
Andronicus
The new Garmin Montera series uses Android, and your favorit geocaching app. When in wifi range, it will work just like your Android phone, but with all the Garmin Goodness. Quote Link to comment
+L0ne.R
I bought a SoundLogic portable charger that I carry with me whenever I'm going to be away from a power source for an extended time. These tips help too: Geocaching with the iPhone - preserving battery life Quote Link to comment
etarace
My gps does list caches in order of nearest-to-where-I-am. Of course I have to load them first. If I make a trip outside of the radius that I have put into my gps then I look them up on my phone. Of course, my phone is not so rugged, and doesn't have such a good battery life. After I look the cache up on my phone, I punch the coordinates into my gps. I can find all the information (hints, logs, photos) on the phone but by navigating using the gps I don't have the power consumption issue. While a gps with Wi-Fi sounds cool, it doesn't seem practical for my budget at this point. I will be carrying my phone anyway so this is a portable solution for me. Quote Link to comment
+Chief301
All hand held GPSr's will search for nearest Geocaches IF you have previously loaded them onto the device. The GPS has no data capability (with the exception of the aforementioned Monterra which can do Wi-Fi). But this is only useful when you have access to wifi, it won't help you out in the field. In theory you could use your phone as a hotspot... Yeah, but that's only if you have cell signal too. So... that goes back to the idea of just looking it up on the phone in the first place. Keystone
I am moving this thread from the Geocaching Topics forum to the GPS forum. Quote Link to comment
+geodarts
If I am traveling and want to use my handheld (Oregon 600), I use my iphone to search and either export the results as a GPX file through my caching app (Geosphere) or save a GPX file from a web browser. There are a number of devices that can transfer a GPX file from the iphone to the gpsr. I use Kingston MobileLite, but RavPower and other manufacturers make similar devices. Quote Link to comment
