Series Caches

My husband and I just started geocaching and went out for our first time this weekend. We found four and didn't find two. My question is: on our list of "nearby caches" there are several that are like #3, #2, #7, etc. of a series and there's a Halloween series from 2012. Are those still active caches or are those done, over with and not there anymore? Also, they don't have any clues. The Halloween series only has a snipit about the movie and no location. Not sure what to do with those. Any advice would be appreciated!!

Are the Halloween caches "traditionals" or are they "?" (unknown) caches? If the former, they would just be located at the posted coordinates. If they are unknown caches, then maybe post a link to an example...

And unless they are archived or disabled, then yes, they are active.

Wow, where do I start?

Red; All caches you can see are active. Ones you can't see are not active. You may see archived(not in the game anymore) caches in your, and other cachers found logs, for example. The names are red, and they have a line through them. There is a chance that a cache may not be there, but it could have been stolen and will be replaced.

Blue; Not all caches have clues in the description. Look at the size-it can tell you a lot. Look at other logs, is someone says something about camo or it being in a tree, you know it's camo'd or in a tree.

Green; ALL caches have a location. I'm not sure what you mean by what you said. How can a physical object(or a place on earth in the case of virtuals) exist if it isn't anywhere? Can you clarify what you mean by this?

Bold; You can find them if you want. You can not find them if you want. You don't have to find every caches there is....

If you visit the cache's listing page and there is a line struck through the cache name, it has either been temporarily disabled or archived. Their icon on the map will also be grayed out. Otherwise the cache should be active. Of course, if you check the recent logs and there are several DNF's in a row or a Needs Maintenance or Needs Archived posted, the cache may in fact be missing but still have an active listing (in which case the owner is not doing their job)

Yes, caches can be around for a long time. One of my favorites was originally listed in 2005, I found it in 2007, and it was most recently found earlier this year.

And as others have indicated, when you view a list of geocaches, normally you won't see archived geocaches (which are "done, over with and not there anymore"), and if you do see them, then they'll be in red with a strike-through line.

You may see temporarily disabled geocaches (which may or may not still be there). You should assume that these caches are not available. The owner may need to replace the container, or there may be other reasons to stay away (for example, some geocaches are disabled at the beginning of wildlife mating seasons and re-enabled after mating season). These caches will be the normal link colors with a strike-through line.

Thanks for all the responses!!! This is my example from the actual cache description: HHF #3 - "Everyone is entitled to one Good Scare" - (GC3X2TX). Summary: You are searching for a regular size cache ... good luck!! Description: Halloween Horror Fest 2012 - "Shiny Metal, Trading Disk" Series #3. Then it goes on to say: Halloween is an American horror franchise that consists of ten slasher films. The franchise focuses on the fictional character of Michael Myers who was committed to a sanitarium as a child. Fifteen years later, he escapes to stalk people of Haddonfield, Illinois while being chased by his former psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis. Michael's reign of terror occurs on the holiday of Halloween on which all of the films primarily take place. The films collectively grossed over $366 million at the box office. Our family loves the Halloween season so much that we have decided to place our first cache series in honor of the holiday. We figured the best way to do this was by paying tribute to some of the best horror movies of all time. There are ten caches in the series. The first forty people to find all ten caches will be rewarded with a Halloween Horror Fest 2012 "shiny, metal trading disk" (What is this?). The disks will be delivered to us by November 15, 2012. Email your name and mailing address to us and we will mail the disk to you once we have received them. Now go find this cache if you dare.

So, I guess I just don't get it. Is the clue in there somewhere? And, what is a "shiny metal trading disk - series #3? Am I just overthinking this? I have a feeling I am. Thanks again for helping this newbie!!!

It's a traditional, meaning the cache is at the posted coordinates. Not sure what "clue" you are looking for. First line on the page says "You are searching for a regular size cache"...which means just that. A regular sized cache - roughly the size of a large tupperware container or average ammo can.

As for the "trading disk"...that's just some side game the owner is playing, offering a collectible item to the first 40 people who find all ten caches in the series.
