OSM to MAGELLAN EXPLORIST GC

YES, you totally are able to do so BUT you have to replace your included BASEMAP with a much smaller one.

Maps4me.net has exactly what you need (both in basemap and OSM maps if you're interested....otherwise you'll have to jump thru hoops to make your own with something like MOBAC or something else to get it to the correct format as default .OSM data will NOT work).

BE SURE TO SAVE YOUR INCLUDED BASEMAP FROM YOUR GC BECAUSE IF YOU LOOSE IT YOU'RE S.O.L. (Magellan may or may not help you replace it....so just put it on a thumb drive somewhere).

Not entirely so, re-loading the 2.15 firmware will re-install the map..

I cheat death a little.. Having a 2nd laptop running Linux.. I force the GC into safe mode (stripped Windows-CE), select the Flash Ram mode, then using the Linux terminal, dd a image copy of the device (example, /dev/sde , if the device shows as drive E) to a .img file, so if need be, again force the GC into safe mode, flash-drive, simply dd that .img file back to /dev/sde. It's just like cloning a disk.)

One note, the latest versions of VantagePoint, will also ask if you want to add the map on the GC to the base map for VP as well.. By all means, Do it! it gives a far more detailed map that the stock map that comes with VantagePoint.

Just for experimentation, I've made image copies of firmwares 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, and 2.15, so all 4 are re-writable. It just takes awhile to transfer. (the 2.15 firmware keeps showing as a USB 1.2 device.. s-l-o-w!!!)

Okay, I know all those words are English, but they just flew completely over my head.

Just got a Magellan Explorist GC to replace our broken Etrex 20. Was hoping to load Open Street Maps on it, but need a bit more help. I have VantagePoint, but for some reason it wants to update the GPS everytime I plug the dadgum thing in. Is there another (easier) way?
