newbie: catch guardian

Hi guys,

I'm new by geocatching and wanted to test it out during my holiday in Thailand.

I followed the GPS to 3 catches on ko Tao but haven't found them. The instruction says there would be a guardian around and I would find the contact details on the website.

Well, I didn't or better don't know where to look for.

Can somebody help please?

Would be great to start my geocatching with some logs from Thailand :)

Finding your First Geocache

I've heard the term used in a number of different ways, but not in a consistent manner to make any specific suggestions. The above article should give you some general guidance about how to go about finding a cache. Keep in mind that if you're looking for high Difficulty rated caches, or ones that are Small to Micro sized, you may spend a great deal of time searching.

If the cache page says there is a guardian around and I would find the contact details on the website, it has nothing to do with you (not) finding the cache. This is just a note to make clear that the cache is maintained by a local, although it has been placed by a geocacher who was there only for a short period ( vacation, work etc.).

It isn't allowed to place vacation caches, since you can't do maintenance etc. on a cache far away from home, so if a sentence like that is on the cache page, it is just to let others know it isn't a vacation throw down, but a well maintained cache.

Why don't you try to contact one of the local cachers at your vacation destination? Maybe they can show you around and help you find some caches. (to find a local cacher: choose a cache that is hidden by a local cacher, check their profile to see if they live there and try to contact them).

ps: the hobby is called geocaching, so you're trying to find a cache not a catch.

Hey it about the caches GC4FJRD and GC52YD6.

Reading the Description, my conclusion is "cache guardian" = local cache maintainer. Looks like the cache owner lives quite a distance from the actual caches in those Listings, so they probably contacted some local(s) to help out, and to be consistent with the following portion of the Guidelines:

Because of the effort required to maintain a geocache, please place physical caches in your usual caching area and not while traveling. Caches placed during travel will likely not be published unless you are able to provide an acceptable maintenance plan. This plan must allow for a quick response to reported problems, and might include the username of a local cacher who will handle maintenance issues in your absence. Alternatively you might train a local person to maintain the cache. Document your maintenance plan in a Note to Reviewer on your cache listing. This should include contact information of the maintainer. The note will auto-delete on publication.

Ah, I think I see now....it appears that the people who hid those two caches may not be local to the area, based on this in the description:

Small note on cache maintenance:

There is a local cache guardian who will assist.

Name and contact info on file with geocaching.com

I think irisisleuk has it right, it's likely a vacation cache and the CO is indicating that arrangements have been made with a local cacher to take care of maintenance issues. Most reviewers will not publish a cache that is far away from the CO's usual caching territory (a "vacation cache") on the assumption that the owner would not be able to adequately maintain the cache. However, if the CO can demonstrate that he or she does routinely return to the area, or has made arrangements with a local cacher (whether true or not  ), it may still be published.

Reading the clues on these two caches may be helpful.

Not too be picky, but it isn't "geocatching". The subject of your search is not likely to be running away from you. It is "geocaching", sounds like "geocashing". I am of no use to you on the rest of your search. Best of luck to you.

Useful tips for him though. He may not yet search like a pro, but at least he won't sound like a n00b! :)
