Downloading a group of geocache files in LOC

Hello,

 

I was wondering how to download multiple geocache files in separate .LOC files. I tried checking off all geocaches in my area and then doing download all, but that downloads them as a group and my GPS does not respond to it.

My GPS is a Magellan Explorist 110.

I am not a premium member.

The ability to download multiple caches at one time is a feature reserved for Premium Membership. You can try it for 3 months for $10 to see if the many features it offers are items you would like to use.

"Does not respond" ? loc files only have lat/long, cache name and GCnumber. If you are expecting more information... Not from a loc file.

A .loc file does contain quite a bit less information than a .gpx file, but for some users that is good enough. The coordinates and cache name are in there. I am NOT a Magellan user, but I am familiar with free software that works well for me with my older Garmin's, and is compatible with Maggies as well. Of course you don't mention what flavor computer (PC / MAC) you use. It obviously matters, as there are always compatibility issues. This free software (EasyGPS) would allow you to send that .loc "group" to your GPS (when you figure out how to open the .loc file with it - hint: FILE Import Geocaches). I have also been known to just edit the .loc extension to .gpx in some situations. Since it seems your 110 accepts .gpx files directly, perhaps simply editing the extension to .gpx will work without the need for any additional software. If I actually owned a Maggie, I would quickly be able to determine how to make best use of any available .loc file.

And seek more advice from other Maggie users. PQ's do have their advantages (more so for "power cachers", but it looks like you are not there yet). They are not always the solution. Just the one that everyone automatically declares to be the magic pill.

I would agree with using GSAK. You should use "Send to GPS" for each individual cache page, then load that data to the GPSr.

I'm really not so sure that mass loading from the checkbox method or loading from the map works anymore.

 

.... otherwise, you might consider going Premium. Pocket Queries are about the most used bennie of Premium Membership.

Download from 1 to 1,000 caches in just a couple of mouse-clicks, 10 times/day.... including the full cache description, hints and last few logs.

This seems unlikely. The Magellan Explorist 110 is a pretty modern GPSr, and you should be able to copy files to it at will using normal file system functions in the operating system (ie. copy-and-paste).

A gpx file, even without the Groundspeak extensions, does provide more data about waypoints than a .loc file but simply changing the filename extensions won't turn a .loc file into a .gpx file. Both are xml files, but the contents are quite different. A .loc file contains a <loc> element with one or waypoints while a .gpx file contains a <gpx> element (which is also where the schema for the Groundspeak extensions is specified) with one or more waypoints.

Agreed. When I first started I used EasyGPS, but quickly bought ExpertGPS (the paid version of the program). It's very easy to use and can import a .loc file with multiple waypoints then save all the waypoints as a *valid* gpx file, which I would expect pretty much every GPS to handle. The g in gpx does not stand for geocache. The acronym stands for GPs eXchange format. Note that exporting waypoints as gpx will not include the Groundspeak extensions and include data such as cache type/size, short and long descriptions, and all the other information what makes a waypoint a geocache.

 

For a non-premium member EasyGPS is a really good way to get started and learn how waypoints are managed.

My recall is that your Magellan wants its own propriety file format. It's not going to take either LOC or GPX files.

I used to use a Magellan, and I ran all file downloads through GPS Babel. It convert to Magellan's UPT file type.

 

If you are successfully loading individual LOC files to your Maggie, then I'm wrong ;-) and I don't know why it won't take a group of them.
