Hi everyone,

I'm not sure whether this is the proper place for this, but I could not come up with any other option so here goes. I am trying to plan a fun/surprising way to ask my girlfriend to marry me. We both love geocaching, so I thought it might be cool to have a geo cache that builds up to the big question. There are a couple of possibilities and issues that I face with this and hopefully with some help of the geocaching community I can pull this off :)

Options:

- Make my own (very first) geocache which somehow builds up to the question

- Use an existing geocache somehow for the purpose

Issues:

- Our main selection criteria for doing a geocache is to look at the amount of favorites on a cache. If a lot of people have marked the cache as a favorite, we choose that one.

- I have never made a geocache so there are probably a million things to take into account when making my own cache + new cache means no favorite points.

- We mostly do geocaches when we are on holidays which makes it hard to create a cache -> however, I might be able to convince her to do a cache close to our house if I can convince her that I found a really cool cache.

Some more information

We live in the Netherlands (Nijmegen).

My GF will be easily convinced to do a cache if the cache has rougher terrain or climbing elements (we are both rock climbers).

How can the community help?

Any advice in this issue is more than welcome.

Should I try to build my own geocache? Or is it better if I can use an existing cache?

Any tips on possible locations near Nijmegen for a cool cache?

tips for cool geocaches in bouldering areas in Fontaine Bleau (we will be there end of april and that could be a possibility) which I might be able to use with the help of its builders?

Anything I haven't thought of or mentioned here?

Some ideas are:

1) Hide your own nice container in the perfect place to pop the question. Use most any cache page, and print it, except use the coordinates to your special container. Place nice things inside. Don't list it, it's just a Geocache for the two of you. Bring it home. Or if you hide it well, it's yours to visit, unlisted, for as long as you wish. If you place a water-tight container, you may later list it as an actual Geocache. Just remember that the best place to propose and the best place for a cache, are usually different places.

2) Go to any Geocache (go there first and be sure it's there, and that the place is great). Find the cache with her, and produce the ring that you "just now found in the container". But you actually had pulled the ring from your pocket.

3) Go anywhere at all, using coordinates you've chosen, and there's no "container". At the selected place, tell her you "Found It", get on one knee, and propose on the spot.

WINNER!!!

(I suggest that the "anywhere at all" be someplace that already has some special meaning to the two of you)

Good Luck!

Great! Thanks for the ideas :)

Ok, next question... I cannot seem to edit my original post. I want to hide some information in case my GF (or someone we know) stumbles on this post and spoils the surprise.

Ya know, this occurred to me back when you started this thread.

You're a cacher, she's a cacher, you're in the forums, seems likely that she might be, too. Or, may check 'em out when she hears that you've been poking around in here.

Maybe instead of "OK, next question...", you should have STARTED with this question!

The only thing I can suggest is SPEED!!! Get off the stick and pop that darn question NOW! Every day you wait increases the chances that you'll end up BUSTED!

Even if you edit all of your posts in this thread to something innocuous, if she comes across it she'll ask you "How come you asked about good camo techniques, and all those people gave you suggestions for how to propose to me? OR, is it even ME????? You been dippin' your Travel Bug somewhere else????"

See how this can go off the rails pretty quickly?

It's unlikely that you can convince us all to rewrite OUR posts, too, so....

Move!!!!!

P.S. Post pictures. Don't forget to strip the EXIF data.
