+carndt777
Our Delorme Earthmate PN-60 is having issues. When you want to navigate to anything, geocache, waypoint, map item, it calculated the route, switches to the map screen, then displays a dialog box "Recalculate Error An error occurred while recalculating the route. Try again?" Trying again is futile. It started when we changed the batteries. Software is current, batteries are fresh, satellites are there. DeLorme's "KnowledgeBase" is slim on the topic, but the ideas posted there (remove batteries for an hour, adjust map settings, its all in your mind) are not working either. Any ideas? Fortunately we bought it at REI, so it may be going back if we can't find a solution. Thanks in advance! Quote Link to comment
+Panda Inc
Not having routable maps loaded for the entire route would give a similar error, I don't recall exactly what it is but I have seen it more than once. Cheers PandA Quote Link to comment
+Team CowboyPapa
Does it start OK now, but then recalculate? If so, I suggest going the the Route menu options and supress route recalculations. Also, you might post here for more help: http://forum.delorme.com/viewforum.php?f=181 Quote Link to comment

It will be necessary to enter Support Mode to delete all route files. "Do not attempt this at home", but to Enter Support Mode, power down the device. Then depress and hold the following three buttons for a few seconds: Page+Menu+Power. Be careful in there. This is a rare occurrence. After you get the PN-60 working again, you may wish to check the Delorme forum to see that you have the latest PN-60 3.2... firmware. Quote Link to comment

I reformatted the whole mess using the instructions on the DeLorme website, figuring that I had nothing to lose since REI will always accept returns and it wasn't worth anything as it was. Then I reinstalled the most recent software, then I reloaded the maps and PQ's. Still don't know what happened to cause the mess, but we were able to go get two Earthcaches in the pouring rain yesterday afternoon so all is right in the land Quote Link to comment
+Trail Blaisers
I had a similar problem but it was resolved when a friend suggest that I delete all of the maps and reinstall them. Quote Link to comment
+PeoriaBill
I had the exact problem and got it resolved with a call to Delorme Technical Support. They had me do a Low Level Format 21002. They will send you the procedure and a link too run the firmware update to have the base data loaded back onto the PN GPS. Regards, Peoria Bill A low level format of all the internal memory partitions may not be required if the problem is limited to route file corruption. In the field, use of the Support Mode to delete "all" route files is necessary because there is no other user friendly menu to perform a complete delete. So, yes, you can "attempt deletion of all route files away from home". But if you are going to go further with your formatting efforts, and need help, you had better be plugged in to the Internet Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 5:00PM Eastern Time Zone, holidays excluded. nmanhipot
Thank you, 39 steps. I, too, had the same recalculation error on my PN-60 and your procedure worked perfectly!!! <Page>+<Menu>+<Power> for about 7 seconds through the splash screen until the blue and white WARNING screen shows up. Press ENTER to Continue: <ENTER> Arrow down one to System... and press <ENTER> Arrow down four to Delete all Route files and press <ENTER> Are you sure?: Arrow down to one to Yes and press <ENTER> Operation successfully completed. Press ENTER to continue: <ENTER> <QUIT> to return to the main System menu Arrow down two to Reboot and press <ENTER> to continue on your merry way. Quote Link to comment

39_Steps
This thread started in 2011. Delorme PN-60 geocachers should have installed at least 3.3/3.4 firmware. Latest 3.6 firmware, whether or not users occasionally suspect route file corruption issues, fixes some interim issues. Edited April 14, 2014 by 39_Steps Quote Link to comment
+dprovan
Making sure you have the latest firmware is excellent advice. I keep my firmware current, but I still run into something that sounds a lot like this maybe once or twice a year or so. I've learned that it's caused by a broken route, typically the latest one, so I just delete routes until it goes away. It normally takes less time to delete enough routes than it does to figure out -- once again -- how to delete a route, since that action always seems oddly hidden to me everytime I need to find it. Maybe I'd have better luck remembering this magic delete-all-routes sequence, especially since I have to admit I've never figured out how to use saved routes or why I'd want to. I haven't see this with the latest beta firmware, so that's a good sign, but I've only been running it a couple months. Quote Link to comment
+Elliotts4
Had this problem today for the first time and found this "old" forum that still applies (isn't Google grand!). I do have the latest firmware. My problem was solved when I deleted all my routes, and I didn't even know I had any routes saved. They appear to be generated when I seek a waypoint that I enter manually, like a multi-cache stage or "better" cache coordinates from a log. But there's not hundreds of them like there should be if all were permanently saved since we got this unit, so maybe they are usually deleted when you stop routing but get "stuck" if you turn off the GPS too quick? Anyway, deleting all solved the problem. Found a great website that addresses just this issue at : http://somenoname.blogspot.com/2013/06/delorme-pn-60-routing-error.html Edited July 2, 2015 by Elliotts4 Quote Link to comment
+dprovan
Yeah, despite my optimism in 2014, I do still see this problem with the latest firmware. And I hadn't noticed the correlation before, but now that you mention it, I think it might always involve a manually entered waypoint, although that's kinda hard to tell because once it starts happening, the symptoms don't always point back to a waypoint. I'm finding that deleting the newest route -- i.e., the top route -- clears the problem every time, even though that route typically has nothing to do with the failed routing attempt. That's fortunate, because there's no way I can remember the clear-all-routes incantation... Quote Link to comment
