Cheney Cache Machine

Link to Cheney Cache Machine Lunch - GC5BXNK

Cheney, WA - We will be caching in Cheney to Four Lakes and back to collect a handful of cache finds. Local cachers are refining details on the Cache Machine route, so stay tuned for the final route to be posted. The CM start, stop and lunch break is at Salnave Park in Cheney.

Cheney is located in Spokane County and is home to Eastern Washington University. The area houses some great geocaches and does not have nearly enough geo-events. We decided to invite you to Cheney, and encourage you to look around. If you haven't seen it before be sure to stop for more than just a cache on EWU campus to see the Inferno Red field at Roos Field.

The surrounding area also includes Four Lakes and Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge made known by powerful forces of volcanism, glaciation and the largest flood in geological history. The combination of basalt outcrops, channeled canyons and ponderosa pine forests infused in a diverse landscape of over 130 marshes, wetlands and lakes, create an environment of aesthetic beauty as well as high quality wildlife habitat.

Cache Machine Details:

Note: circumstances may change after this initial posting. Look for my posts (with the Posted Image icon) in this thread for all the important details and changes. Different from a PNW Cache Machine by TravisL, this cache machine is being developed by local cachers and therefore routes and pre-scouting of the caches will be completed.

Note that several caches on the route map may be marked with a "do not enter" icon (Posted Image). Those cache owners have justifiably asked for their cache to not be on the route, and for the cache to not be sought after this weekend. The cache is, in the owner's opinion, in a sensitive area, whether it's environmentally sensitive, socially sensitive, or physically fragile. Just don't get it. It's not like there's a shortage of caches in the area.

Rules:

1) Follow all traffic laws, and drive safely. This is not a race; there are no winners. The only loser will be someone who gets hurt. When the border guard asks what you're doing, the right answer is honesty: "geocaching".

2) Respect private property, even if the cache owner didn't. Post your DNFs proudly.

3) One logbook entry for "CCM" is fine for most small and micros. Don't go filling up the logbook just because you want to mark your territory. 100 people's names and dates will fill up most one-sheets. Be kind and bring extra paper to add to caches with full logbooks.

4) As with all cache machines, if you find the cache, you'll be the one who has to re-hide it. Hide it as well as you found it. Handing it off to someone else and pointing down saying "it goes there" isn't good enough. Don't be a jerk. The extra 45 seconds isn't going to ruin your day.

If you’ve already found a couple of these caches, that’s fine - give us a chance to find the cache, and then we may turn to you for a hint. Suggestions and ''Count me ins'' are welcome on the event page.

The Cheney Cache Machine FAQ:

When is it? When is the start time?

Saturday, October 4th, 2014. Start time is 7:30 a.m. at Salnave Park in Cheney.

Will it be one large group, will we be split into teams, or what?

We will start as one large group, but after a dozen caches or so, the large groups will likely fragment, and on a long day like this, you'll probably be on your own by the time most people in town are waking up.

Is anything going on before, during, or after?

Breakfast will be served 7:00am to 8:00am

Lunch will be served 1:00pm to 2:00pm.

Cheney CITO will follow the Cache Machine (Details TBD)

If Lunch is at 1:00 p.m., and I haven't reached that point on the route?

Feel free to break from the route at any point for gas, restroom, food, puzzle cache finals not listed on the route. We are leaving lunch open for 1 hour to allow people to break from the route, come rejuvenate and socialize. Jump back to the route where you left off when you are good and ready

It sounds fun, but I've already found some of them.

Then come laugh at us, or guess when we'll be at the caches you haven't hit yet.

What's this gonna cost me?

Nothing for the caching. Or, at least, nothing more than it would cost than if you did the trip solo (e.g., paying for your own gas, hotel, and dinner). I'm not collecting any money for this.

What do the map symbols mean?

Turquoise lines show my suggested route, but if there's a brown trail or grey road that I've drawn in, ignore the turquoise. Purple "P" icons show places to leave a car for a short time. And there's these symbols:

A few questions have come up regarding hotels/motels in the area. Here are a couple options:

Ramada:

Spokane Airport. 20 miles to Salnave Park. Free WiFi, pet friendly, parking available, 100% non smoking, average room rate on hotels.com $100-120

Super8:

Exit 272. 10 miles to Salnave Park. Free WiFi, pet friendly, parking available, average room rate on hotels.com $70-90

There are options closer to the cache machine start, but the prices are a little higher.

has anyone tried to print this route? each time I have tried, it splits the maps in half.....

figured it out.....if you are having that issue,

1. just above the map click the drop down menu and choose "page fit"

2. at the top right click the blue "download" box

3. open it and print.

not sure why, guess my printer doesn't care for the dropbox program?!?!
