PN-60 or ...?

Recommended Posts

I don't know about other models, but be careful to compare the PN-60 to the alternatives, not the PN-40. The PN-60 fixes some of the worst problems of the PN-40, including a much longer battery life and much faster loading and sorting. The interface is similar enough for an easy transition, yet it also has some enhancements that, once I got used to them, were also improvements over the 40's interface.

On the other hand, there's no denying the PN-60 is getting kinda old in GPSr terms, so you might need to go elsewhere if you want flashy new features.

I appreciate the reply. The PN-40 is definitely slow in some respects, but it got the job done. Seems like I had to use GSAK to add hints to the data I transferred to the 40. Any caveats between the PN-60 and GSAK? To my shame, it pooped out because I hadn't used it since a vacation in Summer 2013, and the batteries corroded. Plan to do some last ditch troubleshooting to make sure it is dead, but didn't have time pre-trip on Friday.

What flashy new features are there to consider?

Thanks!

I don't use GSAK, but the PN-60's computer interface is identical to the PN-40. About the only difference there is it can handle 1500 waypoint in each PQs while the PN-40 was limited to 1000.

No interesting new features in the PN-60, just a little slicked up in the user interface.

We have a PN-40 and a Oregon 450. I really can't compare the two. The Oregon has the flashy feature of a touch screen, but the batteries don't last as long. Unless you buy the Garman "t" models (450t) they don't come with a topographical map unlike the PN-40. The Oregon is more simple to use, but I think the PN-40 has better accuracy. The PN-40 screen is easier to see in the sunlight, but the Oregon is bigger. So....we take both when we're out.
