Garmin GPSMAP 64ST and paperless

Recommended Posts

I would like some info from a caching who uses this unit.

I called Garmin to speak with them about the purchase of a GPSMAP64ST. I explained to them I was interested in the paperless caching. I was told by the rep that is worked with open caching site but he didn't think it would work on geocaching .com.

What I would like to know is can you log caches "found" and write notes and transfer this paperless without having to go to each cache page to log finds.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The paperless just gets you a field note and you will still have to go to the website and write an individual log for each cache. If you want to write the log completely from the field you have to use a phone.

Garmin's comment is asinine and they will often claim that the only caching site that works is theirs. If you call with a problem and say that you got caches from GSAK of even GS they will say they can't help because it is those sites problems.

"Paperless" is more than just logging -- actually, using field notes -- on the device and transferring those field notes electronically to geocaching.com. But yes, you can upload those field notes to the website. Use https://www.geocaching.com/my/fieldnotes.aspx .

Typing out a full log into a field note on the unit is a rather cumbersome job. That's why you just do "notes", upload those notes and then alter/edit them into a full-blown log before submitting.

The method is a hard-hookup... that is you must use a USB cord connected to the computer, you cannot transfer wirelessly.

Expounding on the "paperless" aspect, such also includes the full cache description, hints and a of the last (5?) logs, right on the GPSr itself. Eliminating the need to write notes on paper or print caches pages to take with you -- in other words, paperless.

After Garmin started their own version of geocaching, they have been "tooting" their website and downplaying geocaching.com -- more or less the Grandaddy geocaching website. Their GPSr manual refers only to their site also, but the units work just fine on the geocaching.com website, also.

It's a matter of marketing, and (IMO) another backwards step of "corporate mindset". I am a bit dismayed that one of their employed representatives would tell you he didn't think it would work on geocaching.com

Do be aware of this one thing (and they won't tell you this)... if their units worked only with opencaching... they would go out of business for lack of sales! At least as far as hand-held, on the trail units go.

Plus one you did both caches within 20 miles of your house it would get a little boring.

Just for kicks I did a search close to where I am on vacation in indio, ca and there are five within 20 miles. Three of them are in Joshua Tree National Park. Two virtuals and a traditional. Caches are prohibited in national parks except for earth caches approved by NGS and with the permission of the local chief ranger. Clearly these violate that and show the reckless disregard that garmin has for the future of this hobby.

From the GPSMAP 64 manual:

Downloading Geocaches

1 Connect your device to a computer using the USB cable.

2 Go to www.garmin.com/geocache

3 If necessary, create an account.

4 Sign in.

5 Follow the on-screen instructions to find and download geocaches to your device.

www.garmin.com/geocache redirects to http://www.garmin.com/en-US/geocaching where it says:

Get Caches

Use Geocaching.com to search for geocaches in your area that match your skill level. Then download their coordinates, hints, logs and more to your Garmin device to help you find them in the field.

Clicking the "Get Started" button beneath that links to http://www.geocaching.com/guide/default.aspx

Sounds like product support was reading off a script that needs updating.

I am looking for help with geocaching on the 64st. I have used a Magellan for years but moved up to the 64st. How do you remove the loaded caches from the GPS so you can add new ones or do a new search?

The 64st autoloads close geocaches but not all of those from geocaching.com ... what a pain in the neck.

Looking for people to email Q & A back and forth. dkt@littleloon.ca
