Wherigo Has Come to Android!

I know people have been waiting for a way to play Wherigo on android phones, now there is! It's called "WhereYouGo". You can get it straight from the marketplace.

I downloaded the PPC version of the tutorial and copied it into the folder directory. It starts and plays great! I only had one bug, when trying to contain the Energy Source the option was not there just Scan. I saved and closed, restarted and the option appeared.

The user interface is a good start, the icons and photos look great. I'm hoping more polished version soon. The buttons could use some work and their is no use of the droid's menu button.

Try it out! Help the developer find all the bugs, maybe we can get Wherigo going again!

Glad to see more players. I have an iPhone but glad to see Android users can play.

Who is the developer? I assume it is not Groundspeak.

Link to comment

i met him personally, is that enough? ;e))

http://www.asamm.cz/ this is him

he's single person (no company) like me. did some commercial work for a czech geography/mapping company, but WhereYouGo is his own initiative. the app uses parts of this commercial stuff for displaying maps, that's why it is closed source (afaik, he has all the necessary rights to use the code this way, just not releasing the source)

the Wherigo part is code-identical with openwig, only the interface is his work.

the app is (and will remain) free, although there might be a slightly enhanced paid version at some point in the future - unless that turns out to be a problem with GS.

earnings from the paid version would go in part to him and in part to me as donations for the openwig project

hope this helps

Thank you, matejcik. A gc.com profile name was one of the major things I needed. I found it through the link to his blog. When I submit this information, I like to include a profile link so Groundspeak can contact the person for any other information. I'm, for the most part, just the person that does the "paperwork".

In all honesty, I believe Groundspeak will have a problem with a paid version later. As a moderator, I get to see what things Groundspeak does and does not allow in the forum (sorry, but one rule by which I must abide is confidentiality, so I cannot provide examples). From my experience, I can definitely say things get complicated once money enters into it. That's the first thing Groundspeak wants to know: is the app free.

I can't seem to locate it in the Market? Would like to give it a try.

well, the developer originally said that he didn't want to put it up on the Market. perhaps he was testing something and then pulled the app

Darn! A day late and a dollar short as always! I will keep my eye on this for further updates. There will be updates? I hope!

Huh? It's right here.

Thats the same url I posted above. But nothing is found!

(I don't have an Android.) So you can't use that barcode scanner to install the app?

Perhaps it's not fully complete yet or the developer only put it up so private invitations can be sent while it's still in development.

Don't know what else to say. Good luck and let us know what you find!

I just recieved an update today. Includes chosing your favorite map to use instead of the default and new "Settings" button.

Here's a QR code. Just for reference I'm running Verizon's Moto Droid on Android 2.1 software.

[soapbox]

All I can say is that is just the crappy attitude I could should have expected.

People have been begging for the Wherigo game to be exported to other platforms, and when someone takes some initiative, grroundspeak gets all huffy.

If they want to capture the market, they should get off their collective donkeys and DO something with it.

Your QR code is different from AndroidZoom. And when I scan it, it a different search result, but says it can't be found on the market. I have Verizon's Droid Eris 1.5. Could that have anything to do with it?

I wrote to the dev and they responded,

"About 1.5 version. This Android version is not supported. I'm using some features that aren't available in 1.5. Hope, 2.1 will be ready for all phones soon."

Sorry, hopefully you'll get an update soon.

Just got some good news! The statemnet below is from Verizon!

After a long wait and anticipation, DROID Eris will be getting a major firmware upgrade pointing towards Android 2.1 upgrade, Verizon Wireless has officially announced. According to the official announcement, the upgrade will be available “soon” which some anticipate could be by this month’s end.

So hopefully then I will be able to get a chance to try it out!

Hi all

ziggy: as I know, all android phones will be updated to 1.6 or higher android version. Sorry, but 1.6 has some features that, as I wrote to John, use in my library.

coreynjoey: good hunt :)

core of app is based on matejicek's openWig, so if you have some problems that point to 'core', we should solve it on openWig google code. Otherwise, best is write me mail to whereyougo@asamm.cz.

PS: good luck to all :) ... my results - two successful Wherigo completed, after saturday, i founded some bugs, so new rapidly improved version on market hopefully solve most of them ...

today I posted new version on Android Market. Main news are experimental support for Android 1.5 (will be glad for some response if it's working correct) and big fix of Details screen (which blocked completing of some caches) ...

if version from market will not be visible for 1.5 systems, download it e.g. here

good hunt

I downloaded the Android apk, recompiled my Wherigo "Highland_Fling" as a PC cartridge, and loaded it onto the Android's SD card. Much to my surprise it worked well but a little differently than than the Garmin Colorado version. My wife and I will next take the Android (G1) and the Colorado and see where they differ in field operation. Being able to run Wherigo games on the Android via the the "WhereYouGo" apk has the potential to change the entire geocaching gaming experience as it changes the market from a closed machine in a limited environment to a open machine in a mass market. Up to now I've been writing Android/server based geocaching games that have been run on laptops, netbooks, and now Androids.

Hi to all,

thanks to some folks, I just repaired two major bugs in WhereYouGo application (before few minutes posted to market). If you had some problems before, try it now. If you also feel that WhereYouGo works differently than original Wherigo player, you may try it now too. Maybe you'll be nice surprised (and maybe not ;) ). If you found any bugs, write me and I'll look at it as soon as possible.

Nice hunt to all

Did you have to download Microsoft active sync before you downloaded the ppc version? The active sync will not download to my computer for some reason.

Link to comment

I did not have to active sync anything. You can either mount your phone's SD card via USB cable or download the .gwc file from Wherigo through your phone's browser.

Thanks we did it. So all we had to do was download the cartridge to the droid following the droids download instructions. Thanks so much, a couple of techie illiterates, Marge and Jim

Hi all!

I have my a functioning WhereYouGo installed on my LG Ally phone. Seems to work great, however I have a few questions:

1. When downloading the cartridge from WGO website, which version are you supposed to download? Garmins or PocketPC? I've taken the first choice Garmin and it functions well, but,

2. When I go to upload the completed GWS file to WGO, it fails. Has anyone had the same issue?

3. I did get a response from Menion and he promptly replied that it's a "system" compatibility issue and I'd have to log the finds w/o uploading.

Since there's a growing component of cachers out there using the Android system, I find it hard to believe that it's just my phone. I didn't see any previous threads regarding this issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

you want PocketPC. the functionality of all variants is the same, but PocketPC contain sounds, while Garmins don't

i don't follow: you say that you can't upload gws (actually it's called ows, because it's different - see?), and that menion told you that it can't work this way, so you're asking again?

okay, let me answer again: this can't be done.

just to clarify, this is not your phone's issue. this is "system compatibility" issue between the open players (whereyougo/openwig) and the official players (garmins, PPC)

well technically we could do it, but it goes like this:

- GWS is Groundspeak's savegame format

- OWS is openwig/whereyougo format

- they are not compatible, because the players are different

- Wherigo.com allows you to unlock by uploading GWS. not OWS, because, well, Groundspeak didn't create it and there are certainly issues that are more important than supporting it.

- we could reverse-engineer GWS and create an "unlocker" GWS file for each completed cartridge (and this in fact has been done), but it doesn't seem necessary, because:

- you can unlock without GWS, by using an "Unlock Code" that can be displayed on screen, and many cartridges already do this

furthermore, this whole point is moot, because although you can unlock a cartridge on Wherigo.com, there is no way somebody else can check that you unlocked it.

this may become important in the future, if/when Groundspeak extends the Wherigo.com site with this functionality. but i hope that when they do, they will also implement "online unlock" that will allow us to unlock the cartridge directly from the player, killing this problem once and for all

Thanks matejcik for the explanation. I'm not sure I fully understand the formatting issue, as I check the files on my SD card and the file extension is GWS, not OWS.

I'll try the Pocket PC version and see how that runs.

Thanks and sorry for the trouble.

So I have the LG Ally and I did download the whereyougo app. Unfortunately when I download a cart it comes through as an .aspx file. I try to open it via whereyougo and i get a message saying "No Wherigo cartridge available Add cartridge file into /scard/WhereyouGo/directory and state where you go again!" Is there anyway to successfully get the app to work and the file to work properly. When I DL this file I chose the PC pocket option. Thanks in advance.

if the extension really is GWS, then i guess that's a bug in WhereYouGo ... okay, not really a bug, more of a "confusing feature"

menion, if you're reading, would you please reconsider this?

hi Matejcik,

you're right, I just named save game as gws file, which really confuse players. So renamed to ows.

about problem with ASPX files. As was many times wrote, and is also on WhereYouGo page on android market!!, you have to download cartridge through dektop PC browser, not buggy phone browser. All will work fine then (has extension "gwc", not "aspx").

Greetings!

I have just recently used the "WhereYouGo" app for my new DroidX. I have successfully used it to complete my first WIG.

As mentioned above by ssphoto:

I am not able to upload my saved ".gws" file on the WIG site. The website simply states: The file was unreadable by the system. Are you sure you have a valid GWS file?

When I pull the files on to my computer from the phone's sdcard I have three files to choose from: ".gwc" ".gwl" and ".gws"

I'm not very computer savvy and I don't understand this. Great app, would love to be able to unlock the WIGs!

Geoscoobs - I downloaded "Astro" file manager and it helped organize my sdcard. I had to plug in my phone, create a "WhereYouGo" folder on my sdcard then just drop the ".gwc" files that you download in pocketpc format on to that specific folder. then open up the app and hit start.

Finally found the app in the market and it installed well. I was running a 2.2 Froyo version that blacked out the market. Anyway, downloaded the app and installed it. Now I got the cartridge from Wherigo.com and saved it to my desktop and then transfered it to the phone via the usb cable into the correct directory.

What is the extension supposed to be? I have the Motorola Droid with Froyo 2.2. What is the exact directory that it is supposed to be in?

As explained by matejcik, the GWS file made by this app is not in Groundspeak's format - perhaps a different file type ("OWS") would have been less confusing. The only way to unlock the cartridge is if the author tells it to display the completion code.

The authors of WhereYouGo and its base program, OpenWiG, didn't reverse-engineer the Groundspeak GWS format. That would have been a lot of work, and probably a ToU violation. :) You could maybe write to Groundspeak and ask them to provide support for the OWS format, but I'm not sure if you will get a favourable answer.

not entirely true - we do have a spec for the GWS format (although we didn't reverse-engineer it ourselves, we did the walled garden approach, same as with GWC), but it is impractical for us.

we might, at some point in the future, auto-generate an "unlocker" GWS file, but it's not very high priority.

if somebody does go talking to Groundspeak, i think that an "online unlock service" web API would be much more practical than supporting OWS.

Got it! I understand the confusion now. Thanks for clearing this up, the .gws file that the app generates is not at all the same as the .gws that the Wherigo site is looking for to unlock the cartridges.

I just played my first WiG on my android yesterday (Orientering - Tanto, GC2DQ07). I didn't get any satelite background on the map... is this supposed to work? Is there a setting somewhere that controls this?

I think I have the latest release of the app. I had internet access the whole time as far as I know.

Other than that, the app worked great and I was able to complete the cartridge in ~20 minutes.

I really enjoy being able to find Wherigo's with this application. I have found (5) so far with no problems.

If I could have one thing added it would be miles/feet. I can convert the Km/yards in my head but it would be easier the other way.

I am having the same issue when trying to unlock the cartridges on the Wherigo.com website. When I attempt to upload the completed file it gives me an error and will sometimes tell me the file is invaild. One of the cartridges I completed had an unlock code with the remaining (4) not having that. I requested a code from the cache owners and they told me to just upload the file, which as I said does not work. Hopefully that part can be fixed soon.

So, is there a way to recover the unlock code from a completed cartridge? I did not know the ows/gws issue with uploading the unlock code to the Wherigo website when I started doing wherigos and didn't bother to write down the unlock code on a piece of paper. (who carries around paper when they have a smartphone these days?) I use the HTC Droid Incredible and the whereugo app works well.
