What does stealth required mean

I looked for about 4 minutes for a bison tube well hidden in front of a rural Post Office before the clerk came out and asked what I was looking for. He had no idea that there was a geocache there. I left without finding it even though it was supposed to be a PNG.

In Chicago I knelt next to a steel box with a magnetic cache on the bottom. I tied my shoes twice for the cache since I had to return it after writing on the log.

It means that it was not a good location to place a cache.

Bingo!

When stealth is required I do not look at any one. I feel that if I don't see them, they don't see me. Seems to work, so far no one has come up to ask me what I am doing.

Good system, I use it too. Get in and get out, and no one's the wiser. So far, so good.

Forget Stealth:

I advise you to not try and be stealthy. That just attracts more undue attention. Instead be bold. Be proud of what you are doing - act as though you are doing nothing wrong (mostly because you aren't!!). Act as though it is your job to find that cache, a job you are very good at and proud to do. Find it. Sign it. Put it back and move on. Carry a clipboard and look professional - you'll blend into the background.

Caches that claim "Stealth Required" are generally not a problem at all. Think a bit out of the box. Just look for them after business hours or during odd times. I have went out in the rain/snow, early in the morning, late at night etc. on purpose to snag a caches in a busy areas when I knew there would be a minimum chance of people.

Wrong. If you don't like caches requiring stealth, by all means ignore them. But you will miss a lot of very beautiful places!

You keep using that pic as an example. So far I have resisted, but I can no longer... I don't see that as a beautiful place. Sorry.

Well put and well worth listening to!

That was my very first thought as well.

Okay. I'll use a different photo next time.

If you do not think such a view is beautiful, feel free to ignore it. There are, however, many people who do find it beautiful. Part of the muggle problem is the tour buses that stop for the view, and the wedding parties who have their photos taken here.

Lol my exact thoughts. The cast iron stove RIGHT OUTSIDE the cracker barrel window was never a good idea.

To me "stealth required" means - "find this one fast before it gets muggled", because it will - there's only so many ways NOT to look suspicious when you're poking in around and under things in full view of the public. Stealth Required caches should come with VERY good hints.

Stealth - in an urban area, best not to sing out loud "I found a geocache." Wait until there is lull in muggles, drop your pen/pennies/quarter so you have to retrieve them and snag the cache. Most folks are so wrapped up in themselves, they will only look at you if you are looking around at people, seeing if they are looking at you.

We look for the cache first, and when we spy it walk away and look at something else, discussing how to retrieve it. Taking photos at odd angles - "for an assignment" if I'm asked - is another ruse I have used.

Most of our caching is rural, so we don't often run into problems.

Not a huge fan of stealth required caches but sometimes they can be fun. Like you're on a super secret spy mission or something, but maybe thats just me.

There are many people who have expressed a similar sentiment, so you're not alone. I'm just not one of them. I'm a 6' 200 Lb. guy with a military brush cut, and I'm told I'm always "mean looking" I have had the cops called on me at least twice while Geocaching.

I believe the stealth attribute is way over used. But if someone goes out of their way to type the word stealth in the body of their cache description, 99 times out 100 the cache isn't for me. And c'mon Mr. Dolphin, for every one of your caches overlooking Manhattan or the Statue of Liberty, there are 10,000 craptastic caches in store parking lots.

And by the way, I believe the quote we're looking for is from Narcissa, and it's used in at least one regular poster's signature line: "Stealth is a euphemism for there ought not be a cache here".

I am sure that there are many new geocachers like myself who live in large cities ( upto a million population ) who are looking for places to place their caches and although their may be grassland . woodland, parkland in the cities many already have caches located their and to place them close to (that as far as I can tell minimum distance 0.1 of a mile between caches ) makes it more difficult so stealth caches may be the only option for some , thats when I think the micro , nano caches come into their own , placing on lamp posts , electricity boxes , fence posts ...

stealth caches have their good and bad points , if you think you may give the game away by visiting why not change the time of day you go to the cache , a night vist for instance

anyways thats just my two pennies worth from a newby cacher

I have a technique i use when Urbexing, where 'stealth' is required, and that is I am very bold, and make my presence obvious! I do this by wearing a Hi-Viz jacket/tabbard, hard-hat, and carrying a clipboard! Not a single person gives you a second glance! And who would think it odd for a person looking like a surveyer/engineer/builder to be looking intently around a small spot?

I have yet to try this when caching, but I have no doubt it will work.

The same technique works in the workplace, for having a few sly minutes not working! Just wander about, purposefully, carrying some random paperwork! B)

Think of what stealth means in other contexts...

A stealth airplane can do its job without being noticed by radar, and in some cases unnoticed by eyes or ears. The same applies to us when we geocache. Others out there don't know we geocachers "exist", but we can get in and out without being noticed.

That being said, don't "try to be stealthy." Instead, do what you set out to do like it's your job.

It means that you should be alert to the fact that others (usually non-cachers) may observe you retrieving and replacing the cache, hence revealing it's hiding location.

The idea, of course, is to help prevent somebody not familiar with geocaching to walk away with the cache.

Yep, and most caches fit that description. One step below, No hint needed.
