CheesePasty
Hi guys, I have my heart set on buying the etrex 20, does the etrex 20 come with a map on as standard, or do you have to buy them seperate and upload them onto the gps? Thanks. Quote Link to comment
+Gitchee-Gummee
The eTrex 20 comes with a base map, which consists of major roadways and that is about it. No secondary, local or rural highways, and not much (if anything) in the line of physical geographic features, either. ANY device where the specs say "base maps" are the same. Good thing about the eTrex 20 though, with the expandable memory (mSD card), it will accept large and complicated maps with no problem. There are good maps available, both paid and free. +MartyBartfast
It looks like you're in the UK (North East?), so go to http://talkytoaster.info/ukmaps.htm and you can download free OSM maps from there which have been specifically built for the Garmin GPSs, I use them and they are excellent, instructions are on the site. I would also recommend splashing out a fiver for a micro SD card. If you ever venture outside the UK you can get similar maps for pretty much the whole world from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ which I've used on holidays in France, Crofu and Menorca. +HHL
And the "Freizeitkarte" comes with six different TypFiles to choose from. http://www.freizeitkarte-osm.de/garmin/en/design.html Have a look here how TypFiles work on the very same OSM data: http://tools.geofabrik.de/mc/#14/56.0022/-4.8014&num=6&mt0=mapnik&mt1=geofabrik&mt2=geofabrik-de&mt3=hike_bike&mt4=cyclemap&mt5=geofabrik-topo Hans Quote Link to comment
