+W7WT
I have a virtual "High on a Windy Hill" at Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic National Park. It has been there about seven years and yesterday I had a cacher that dipped a travel bug. Here is his log: I was here about a year ago. Today I have a Red Jeep Travel Bug that needs to record a location in the Park but I don't have the stuff with me to find a container. I hope that a drop and pickup will get the distance added to its travels! [view this log] Red Jeep at Hurricane Ridge 01 Red Jeep at Hurricane Ridge 01 Red Jeep at Hurricane Ridge 03 I don't do travel bugs and this practice is no problem for me. It has been there over seven years and this is the first time it has happened. The pictures of the Red Jeeps were certainly taken at Hurricane Ridge. Is it OK for cachers to do this? Thanks Dick W7WT Quote Link to comment

Thanks Dick W7WT I don't see why not. I have a coin that is traveling with a commercial pilot and he has been dipping it for quite some time now. I don't have a problem with that, in fact I would rather he do that than drop it in some random cache and that is the last I hear of it. Some cachers have a personal geocoin that they dip at every cache to get their mileage. Jim Edited August 9, 2009 by jholly Quote Link to comment

I don't need to verify that he was there etc. Dick Quote Link to comment
jholly
One other side note. Remember that coin you gave me at the last GeoLau? I set it free and it traveled across the country, through the UK and now is bouncing around Europe. Best traveler to date. Must be that W7WT Karma Jim Quote Link to comment
+Sagefox
Thanks Jim. no problem. I assume I don't need to do anything. I don't need to verify that he was there etc. Dick I would assume that the cacher visited the site because what would be the point in dipping a travel bug if they didn't actually go all the way out to your cache - if the tb never actually went to the site? I would think he would need to have visited the virtual. Virtual logging of a virtual or any other cache is a no-no so virtual dipping must also be wrong. Quote Link to comment

Dick did say the pictures of the jeeps were obviously taken at Hurricane Ridge. I agree virtual logging in any cache is a no-no, but that does not seem to be the case here. I answered Dick's immediate question. Jim Quote Link to comment

You should access the bug page and under Trackable Item Options select Mark Item Missing. Or at least post a note and have the bug owner move it out. http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.as...a5-39e2fed360bf Edited August 10, 2009 by BlueDeuce Quote Link to comment
+W7WT
I really don't want to get into the bug tracking business. During the summer months I am busy enough verifying the fact they were actually there. I am 84 and when I am gone, High on a Windy Hill will also be gone. Virtuals can no longer be adopted. When the snow gets deep and they haven't started plowing the roads, I have very few logs, just a cross-country skier or a snowshoer. that has come up the unplowed road. Quote Link to comment
+BlueDeuce
I'll take care of it. Quote Link to comment

That's why we encourage people to leave their virtuals alone. Someone will take care of it for you so it will stay alive. I miss virtuals. I thought they were a very important element in caching. They took me to places I would have never gone otherwise. High on a Windy Hill is the only reason I wanted to go to Hurricane Ridge. TTUMS Edited August 10, 2009 by Shop99er Quote Link to comment

I don't know if they have heat resistant computers where I am going. But if it is hot as the weather we had a couple of weeks ago, I don't want to go. See you at the GeoLuau. Right now we have 3,295 finds. Hope to pick up four more before Saturday so we can get our 3,300 at the GeoLuau. Dick Edited August 10, 2009 by W7WT Quote Link to comment
