Garmin Zumo 340 / 350

Recommended Posts

I'm on the verge of buying Zumo 340 (or 350, same device, i assume) for motorcycle caching. The idea is to have a Pocket Query show on the map while driving so I can randomly pick up caches while I'm on the go. I intend to use Zumo to get nearby and my eTrex 20 to reach the zero point.

I've noticed that with GSAK I can turn a pocket query into a neat list of POIs, that depending on a macro work at least on some devices, but I couldn't find a macro for that's for this model. There were some macros for Zumos, but quite frankly the whole GSAK macro list is a mess, and I have no idea which one of them works with this version.

The only interesting thing I found, was this post. It shows how to import a Pocket Query to the Favourites, which is useful, because it seems that you can't remove POI's from your list while on the road, but you can delete single favourites. The instruction, however, is for Nuvi 13XX (and according to the comments it also works on Nuvi 23XX). The UI looks exactly the same between Nuvi 13XX and Zumo 340.

Anyone know if this works on Zumo 340 or 350?

On my Garmin nuvi's I use the GSAK macro named Nuvi_GPX_by_CT. It works great on the nuvi, so I suspect it should work equally well on the Zumo which is quite similar to a nuvi. If your specific Zumo model is not listed, I would try picking a nuvi model that is in the same generation as the Zumo ... maybe something like the 3590. You load the GPX file into your zumo with Garmin's POI Loader program, so the caches end up as Custom POI's.

The main issue you may run into is the differences in various Garmin models on the amount of detail they show for Custom POI's on the navigation screen. Some models show great detail, others show no icons at all on the navigation screen. On my nuvi models the cache icons show up very nicely at certain zoom levels. You will just have to try it and see what you get.
