Compass and Routable Map

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

We are fairly new to GC (about a month)

Up until last week we used an iPhone, after some trials with GPSses from friends (GPSMap62s and Oregon 600) we've decided to buy an Oregon 600 (mostly because of the battery lifetime and more robustness compared to the phone).

Overall we are pleased with our GPS but I'm facing an issue which is causing me headaches.

I've been reading this forum, the manual (which is quite basic), searched Google but I could not really find an answer.

I'm using a routable map, and the GPS routes us quite good to the approx. cache location. (we use it mostly by bike or while walking/hiking)

When we arrive at a decent distance from the cache I want to enable the compass to direct us (sometimes offroad) straght to the cache but the compass is acting weird at this point.

Sometimes it's like the compass is directing us to the next 'turn' on our route.

Sometimes the compass does not appear to have a destination anymore (ex. when we went too far and need to go back) then I need to reselect the cache and press "GO" again ... and so on.

I'm pretty sure it's a setting, but I clearly cannot pinpoint it.

Is there a possibility to adapt the profile that the map reacts as a routable map, using kind of turn-by-turn routing. When we switch to compass I want it to be heading straight to the cache location (not routing along paths or something else...)

So that we can bike to the approx. location (using the map), and afterwards we leave our bikes and walk/hike straight to the cache (using the compass).

We did not have these issues with the borrowed GPSses (but there were other maps/settings where I did not messed a lot with, as they were not my gps)

Also a second (much less important) issue is that with the borrowed Oregon 600, when we were in a range of 20 -25 mtrs the GPS made a beeping sound that we were in the approximity of the cache. It was easy, because at that point we changed to compass and started searching. I found proximity alarms, but they seem to be specific for each cache, or waypoint. Not really for all caches.

Every help is highly appreciated,

Regards,

KenT
