Oregon 550T Startup Issues

Recommended Posts

I went to use my 550T and when i try to start it up, it gets to the point where it is loading the "waypoints, tracks and routes". The green bar goes half way and then stops. after about 5 seconds, it turns itself off. The batteries are fresh, so i know it is not that. Anyone else having this issue, or know if it is something i can fix myself?

Thanks,

When it happens to me it's the batteries (which you've ruled out in your case), the SD Card or a file on it (remove it as a test, or re-seat and lock it down), or a misbehaving file in [OR Drive]:/Garmin/GPX (save the files if you like, then delete them from that GPX folder).

I also had that happen with a bad update, but that was on my old 450T.

You could try a Master Reset. It may be a last resort, but I'm throwing it out there, just in case.

Agree with kunarion re the sd card or bad file. Did this behaviour start after downloading a cache or installing a map? Remove the sd card and then start the unit, if ok it will be the card or a file on it. If it wont start with card removed connect it to a pc, back up your files and either do a reset or install the firmware again. Work through eliminating possibilities and then once it starts you can find out what caused the problem.

I get this every so often and most times I think you do not need to clear out the SD card if you keep all the gpx files on the SD card. Just take the card out and start the Oregon, no caches will be found. Put the SD card in again and the internal cache database will be rebuilt and no data will be lost. Invaluable if it happens when out it the field.

Indeed. It's a mystery. Has not happened to me in a very long time, but is why I always check the function of the device immediately after loading a fresh .gpx for a caching day. Even though it's been a while, I still hold my breath at the 50% point on the progress bar.

As others have noted, it seems that just reloading the same *.gpx file(s) again clears up the issue, and Garmin has never been able to explain why this happens nor has there ever been a fix for it.
