Loading maps into Oregon 550t

Recommended Posts

It depends upon the source for your maps as to how you generate them, but your objective in the end is to generate an *.img file Just copy that file to the Garmin folder on the 550T and you're good to go. Just be sure you give it a unique filename so that you don't copy over an existing *.img file on your unit unless that's what you are wanting to do. If it's too big, create a Garmin folder on a uSD card and install that in your unit, and copy the map to that.

If you'll tell us where your map is coming from, we'll be able to help you get that *.img file created. Some sites (OSM, for example) generate them for you. Others require loading to a tool like Basecamp or Mapsource so that you can select the tiles you want in your *.img file manually.

there are more detailed state topo maps at www.gpsfiledepot.com. Some are more up to date than others.

For the most part, you install them via the Garmin MapInstall program. You also need the Garmin Map Manager so that you can first install them on the computer for MapInstall to read. Incidentally, you'll also be able to read the maps in Basecamp without the GPS connected.

Some maps do come pre-assembled as a .img file. If that's the case, you just copy the .img file over to the garmin directory on your device - internal storage or SD card.

OK - it's a little dated, but here's a 2010 for New Jersey as an example. Not sure how current yours are. http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/114/

If you download this package, you will get an *.exe file. When you execute it, it 'installs' the map on your computer in the same manner one might install an application. Having done that, it can then be accessed by Mapsource or Basecamp, and from one of those apps, you select the tiles that you want (or perhaps even select all of them) and Mapsource/Basecamp will create the *.img map for transfer to your unit.

If you're more interested (or additionally interested) in more of a streets and paths and trails version, visit http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php. There, you select the tiles you will want directly from their world map, and wait for an email telling you that your maps are ready. They will come in several forms. First, you'll find an *.img file that (renamed to something you can remember!) can be added to the collection of *.img files already in the Garmin folder on your device. If you run out of space on your 550, you can always get a uSD card, create a Garmin folder on that, and put maps there as well. This site will also provide you with the *.exe file mentioned above that you can use if you want to see this map from the Mapsource or Basecamp app.
