CVGpilot
What device do you think most people GC with these days, on or the other OR both? I ask because I was talking about GC to an individual new to the hobby and they did not know that as little as two years ago we all had GPSRs. Personally I have used only my iPhone for about 1.5-2 years in rural, urban, desert and internationally without issue. I must say it is nice to follow my phone and using the "flashlight" on the back at the same time. The detailed maps and all the intel you could need at your finger tips almost makes GC too easy. Battery life is a none issue these days, what with the verity of back ups and portable charging options. I remember a time when a good multi cash could take days and or phoning someone for a Google was needed. Quote Link to comment
wmpastor
This issue gets batted around like a tennis ball. The GPSr crowd looks down at phones as being merely okay. The problem is, the phones literally get better for caching every year, while the gpsrs pretty much stand still. Quote Link to comment
CVGpilot
Ah, yes I have not checked in here in a few years. Well like it or not, phones will take over GC. Not all bad however, I would be willing to bet GC has grown substantially just due to the app alone. I have spent big bucks on handheld GPSRs in the past, all had sub par displays and very limited capabilities compared to a phone. It was just interesting to meet someone that actually only knew of GC from the app. It should not be controversial for folks the still wish to enjoy it the ol fashion way, to each their own. Good times.. Quote Link to comment
Roman!
Im sure most people cache with the app, even those that do have a GSPr. I have an Oregon, a Nuvi and an iPhone and I use all three about the same. Quote Link to comment
Cascade Reviewer
I'm moving this thread to the GPS forum since this is about caching, not off topic. Quote Link to comment
coachstahly
I use my GPS for planned outings and my phone for more spur of the moment caching. Quote Link to comment
sholomar
My galaxy s4 gets me to within a couple feet of ground zero and does well enough in the woods and inside for that matter... seems like spending the money on a dedicated gps is a somewhat old fashioned way of doing it. imo. +BAMBOOZLE
My only experience is with iPhones and if that was all that was available I'd quit caching.....I can't see the screen in bright sunlight. I like my 5S, carry it in the truck and use a couple of apps but for the trail, forget it. Quote Link to comment
ADKer
If I'm just getting a quick cache in town I'll use my android. Otherwise I prefer my eTrex 20. Quote Link to comment
Gitchee-Gummee
I use both phone and GPSr. GPSr for planned outings, phone for spur-of-the-moment... as stated previously. If given a choice to make... one or the other... you can have my phone. Quote Link to comment
ecanderson
I use both. For a quickie, urban, spur-of-the-moment cache, I will use my Samsung Galaxy Nexus phone and c:geo. If I plan a serious day of caching, you certainly won't catch me taking the Samsung out of its case in the middle of rockpile. Given the number of times my Oregon 450 has been abused in the field in ways my Samsung wouldn't have survived, I've saved myself the pain of replacing of a couple of phones. The 450 isn't indestructible, but it's miles ahead of the phone for both water and shock resistance. Quote Link to comment
