Garmin GPSMap 62S

Recommended Posts

We have recently bought a Garmin GPSMap 62S, we installed the free map that we got with it, which is the 1:50,000. But when we turn it on and walk to a cache, once we stop walking the GPS will vary our location by as much as 20m making it appear on the map that we are walking round in various patterns. Even when it has established a good GPS signal or in an open field. Is this normal? If it is, then my GPS on my Samsung S4 Mini is far more accurate than my £250 GPS!

Apart from installing the maps, the GPS is straight out the box. Am I missing something or do I have a dodgy system?

Many Thanks

I would be curious to see if anyone else has this problem. I've had what sounds like the same thing happening to both my 60Csx, and the 62s I just got a couple weeks ago.

I don't recall ever having this problem before, and hope it is not in either GPS.

We might be having slightly different problems. I read that it appears, on the map, you are walking around. With mine it appears GZ is drifting around.

It isn't doing it all the time, and I was hoping it was something to do with the satellites, or solar flares, or something that will work itself out. (doesn't seem to be doing it all the time)

Yeah it sounds like the same problem. When we are walking it is fine, as soon as we come to a stop, the location arrow on the screen will wander around. As if we are walking around in circles. The marker at the top of the screen that tells you the distance to the waypoint will vary from 0m to 20m and I think weve also seen upto 27m, then itll drop back down to around 5m. I thought these GPS things were accurate down to a few feet!

In Settings > Routing make sure that you select "Lock to Road" to OFF.

Otherwise, it might try to set you to the nearest road.
