Max size of geocache name on GPSmap 64

Hi,

 

The title says it all: does anybody know what the max size of a geocache name is in the list of geocaches on a GPSmap 64?

I'll bet it's the same as waypoints, which a quick test shows is 30 characters.

On further thought, if they're indexed based on Code, then there may be a much higher limit (I won't say no limit, there is always a limit).

Create a cache in GSAK with a name

aaaaaaaaaabbbbbbbbbbccccccccccddddddddddeeeeeeeeeeffffffffffgggggggggghhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiijjjjjjjjjj

, export that cache and see which chars do it onto the unit. *

* the 62 should have a limit of 200+ chars.

The current cache name limit given by Groundspeak is 50 chars. So you're good with your Garmin 64 anyway.

I've been testing things and whatever length > 13 I set as smart name in GSAK, only 13 chars are shown in the list of geocaches.

The point of a smart name in GSAK is to truncate the title for old GPS units that can't have a long name. You do not need to use that feature on a 64.

Yes, there is not enough room with the list buttons.

OPEN the cache and you'll see the full lenght of the cache’s name.

Indeed, but if one does a trail, all these caches have the same name (except from some number at the very end). If you need to open all the caches in order to know the next in sequence. One can't rely on the distance for this.

Export the caches with a custom name and have the usersort number at the very beginning.
