New profile page - make About the default

Just a little feedback on the new site layout. Our customised profile pages have now been relegated to the last tab on the profile page. This is the place where we put what we want to show visitors to our profile, so it always made sense that this was the default profile view. Could this be reinstated, or maybe have an option to select which profile tab is shown first when people visit our profiles?

Please, no. When I go to a profile page, 99.9% of the time I want to see what caches someone has found and/or owned. I don't want to see a giant wall of gaudy "achievement badges" or mind-numbing statistics.

I would be happy if we could set which view we see for everyone's profile: if the OP wants to immediately be taken to the About tab, super. If I want to be taken to the Geocaches tab, perfect.

+1 I agree.

Before this new provider, I'd often time-out before some of those "badges", cache "achievements", and even animated carp finally loaded.

Fully agree. The stuff in the OP's About tab is exactly what I don't want to see!

Went to the "new" profile page of the OP to see if it's any different than what I'm normally seeing (I'm still using the "old" version), as (to me) the the OP's "about" tab is kinda tame compared to some seen. :)

But, those with spinning coins, flowing glitter, fireworks, and other carp added to that simple (project gc or gsak) stat run would have to be allowed as well, and for that I'd have to stick with no thanks.

On the other hand, I would prefer to see the About tab.

But it sounds like a user-editable statistics/awards/memorabilia tab would be useful, so users can put the bulky output of BadgeGen/Project-GC/whatever there, and leave the About tab for personal information.

Personally, I think the current allocation of tabs is enough. I rarely see 'personal information' on profiles and don't see why cachers would need to have a separate tab for it, when they can just put it at the top of the About tab above all their badges/stats/etc.

If people make their way to my profile, I want them to see what I am About. The geocaches I have found do not define me as part of this game. I suppose the information in the About tab might be a little wordy - it has grown over the years. Perhaps very few people visit my profile in any event. Nevertheless, It is what I want people to see.

Why do you to force people to see it even though they're probably not going to read it? If the About tab was the default landing page and anyone wanted to look at your profile for some specific reason, e.g. to see if you've found a particular cache, then they are going to immediately skip from the About tab to one of the other tabs; if anyone is interested in your life story then they would search out the About tab to look at it but I'm sure those will be in the minority. I just looked at your profile and it's not particualrly problematic although there all those images which are eating up my bandwidth, but I have seen some profiles which take several minutes to download loads of stuff that I'm not interested in.

Nice. That sort of an About page is exactly what I want to see when I go to someone's profile. It says so much more about the person than a list of how many caches of each type they've found/owned.

I'd put the list of top favorite caches in a bookmark list, with comments about each cache in the bookmark entries, but you've put the more general information at the beginning, so those who don't want to read all the top favorite caches can read just the first couple paragraphs and then move on.

A custom "About" page is precisely to display first exactly what you want people to see first. Whether that's nothing, a paragraph about you, or your entire statistical history.Yep, the latter is tedious for visitors, but as with any other content, it says what you're about (for good or ill).

Now, GS could provide a custom About block but disallow complex HTML and limit the content, but also provide a custom stats tab (this has been brought up before). That, I think, would be the middle ground.

The "About" page at least needs to be the default view for reviewers. That's where they post contact information, land use policies, etc. Many reviewers don't have hides or finds, so defaulting to their caches found/owned page is nigh useless.

That's what I would like to see as well. To me the "About" tab (which used to be called "Profile") would contain information "about" the user, basically biographical information. For example, it might indicate that one is retired, the type of caching they like to do, and list other other hobbies. Yes, believe it or not, some geocachers have other hobbies.

As there are several third party statistics gathering sites (GSAK, project-gc, mygeocachingprofile) one way to make the Statistics tab customizable would be to allow users which source they want to use for their statistics and the GS site could integrate with those partners to automatically include the html generated statistics on the Stats tab. Instead, those that use those 3rd party sites cut-n-paste html onto their "About" page *and* have a Statistics tab with the GS generated stats.

Since some of the busiest About or Profile pages are full badges and other artwork related to specific caches or cache series, a user editable "Badges and Achievements" page would be useful.

It appears GS has done just that -I'm guessing sometime in the last 12 hours or so. I'm well aware that I'm in the minority, but I'm quite happy to see this. I also know that a good bit of folks were concerned about heavy page load times. So far, I've not seen any of that. To be fair, though, the stuff on my page pales in comparison to some others.

And so it goes.
