Oregon 550t

Recommended Posts

I purchased a used Oregon 550T to use for geocaching. I am unable to figure out how to get the geocaches from the computer on to the unit. When i plug in a USB cord(purchased at best buy did not come with original)the computer does not recognise the unit is plugged in. I have tried on a couple differant computers and still no luck. Wondering if anyone has one of these units and if they could give me some points. thanks for taking the time to read this.

Should work. Wonder about the cable and 'used' 550, but ...

Setup / System / Interface

Make sure you're in 'Garmin Serial' mode.

If that's no help, give this a go:

  1. Disconnect cable entirely.
  2. Plug cable into Garmin.
  3. Push power button on Garmin and continue to hold while inserting other end of USB into USB port of computer.
  4. Wait about 20 seconds (keep holding that button) and then release the button.

If that's no help, give the master reset a go:

Power device off

  1. Press and hold a finger on upper-left corner of display
  2. Power device on while continuing to press corner of display
  3. Release power button once Oregon powers on
  4. Touch 'Yes' on Do you really want to erase all user data? message

Does the device otherwise turn on and function? I also wonder about the USB cable. The cable can seem perfectly fine, yet a different cable can sometimes make all the difference.

If ecanderson's suggestions don't work, you could place GPX files (especially Pocket Queries) onto a micro SD card, and go caching with that. Files are placed into the folder "Garmin/GPX", and you make those folders manually on an SD card. But of course if USB doesn't work, managing cache files will be a pain. And field notes won't work.

But I'd give that master reset idea a try.

I have tried all suggestions but still no luck. I have tried 3 differant usb cables. Going to see if best buy can help me Maybe to much technology for me with this one. I have been using a Garmin ETREX for 10 years. Manually entering all caches.

Thank you for your response. Very much appreciate the help.

I have a 550T, so I can test things for you. Immediately when I plug it in, the Garmin logo appears. But it takes at least 25 seconds for my computer to recognize the USB device.

Not all usb cables allow the transfer of data. Many only provide charging capabilities. Make sure the package specifically states that data can be transferred.

Edited to add that I have purchased garmin cables at Target to replace my cables originally included with my gps.

Bought a cable at Radio Shack a few years ago when I damaged the one that came with the gps. Pretty standard cable. Take the gps with you so the sales staff can help you find what you want. The selection can be a little confusing to the uninitiated.

Previous poster is right when he says it can take a while for the gps to be recognized by the computer.
