A Christmas Caching Puzzle

If you are a new member of geocaching.com and you joined anytime after October 1st, 2008 and then you might want to read this page carefully! This is a contest that is open to geocaching accounts created between October 1st, 2008 and December 26th, 2008 (inclusive).

I am willing to give you a free trackable item and a bonus prize to go with it, these are very nice unique trackable items and with the bonus item you could get a prize that is worth about $10.00, if you could even find it anywhere. I will mail this item to you at the address you specify.

Your account must exist when this message is first posted.

This message will be posted December 26th at midnight or shortly thereafter. This contest is intended to be a learning experience and I know a lot of the answers may not be immediately apparent. Things are not always apparent to geocachers and we have one type of cache that is actually called a Mystery/Puzzle Cache where seekers try and find a cache using the information on the cache page rather than the coordinates, think of this hunt as your first puzzle solving experience!

This contest is really about learning; learning how this website and geocaching.com work and learning how to figure out information that isn't readily apparent. You need to master a few website skills, you need to use your imagination to decipher where the answers might be hidden and you need to pay attention. You will need certain snippets of information. You will not need to disclose any information about yourself unless you are a winner, then you will need to send your snail mail so that your new trackable item can be shipped to you. For people who are established as geocachers and use these forums regularly this contest would probably be the easiest contest ever. All you need to do is figure out exactly what I might have to give you, sounds easy doesn't it? Once you figure out what I might have to give you then you will need to send me an email with the answers to the questions to qualify.

You can send me an email using the geocaching.com website.

Before you send your email to me you must make a post in this thread stating that you are "sending contest email now".

The contest entry email must include all the following information -

First and foremost, you must include the "exact name" of the trackable item you are requesting in your email. (copy and paste works here, don't get it wrong or you won't get the item)

That is the first and last step, figure out which trackable item you should request and this is important - make sure you request the correct one!

Read all the contest rules below so you can "find" the answers and win a trackable item.

There are ten questions you need to answer. These questions might seem strange if you are a new reader so don't be afraid to ask questions, just don't ask them in this thread, in fact, you would be better off trying to get some private answers or reading and finding the right solutions yourself. Every question answered publicly will be available to every other person reading so public responses might give another geocacher the answer they need to win!

Here are ten questions you need to answer.

1) Include the geocaching nickname of one of the following people, Jon, Dave, Marianne, Mark or Frank. (this question is the best overall hint, well I think so anyway  ) Do I hear a gnashing of teeth from a certain forum!

2) Name one item that does not belong in a geocache.

3) Include your "home coordinates", they do not have to be precise but must be accurate enough to check your answers. You can change the last digit and then no one will actually know which house is yours in Google Earth!

3) Include the GC number of the active geocache closeset to your home coordinates. (Another hint - You may have to figure out your home coordinates and set them up in your geocaching.com account before this feature works for you.)

4) Include the GC number of the oldest active cache in your state, province, territory or country.

5) Your email must include a description of one advantage that is secured by being a Premium Member of geocaching.com.

6) You must include the name of this geocacher, widely recognized in the geocaching world as having the most influence on this activity. If you have the right name then you will be able to confirm by checking and seeing that this geocacher has found approximately 335 geocaches and has hidden 3 geocaches.

7) You must include the name at least one Charter Member of geocaching.com, preferably one who lives in your state, province, territory or country and you must explain what the term Charter Member means in relation to this website.

8) You must explain one difference between a loc file and a gpx file.

9) You have to tell me which cache is my favourite cache and you have to put that cache on your watchlist.

10) You have to tell me which colour is your favourite colour?

Figuring out which trackable item you need to request is only going to be possible after you make sure you have an acceptable set of answers ready to email. The number of your post here in this thread that says "sending a contest email" is the key to determining which trackable item you request.

Figure out exactly where we are in the contest by counting the the "sending a contest email"(s) already posted to this thread. ie. If you see "sending a contest email" six times then you know that 6 people might have given a correct response before you, you must request the seventh trackable item. Work through the list of trackable items in numeric order, pay attention, if you get the name of your requested item wrong you may be disqualified.

Here is another hint - I will accept the first nineteen messages on this thread that say "sending a contest email" as valid contest entries. If there are entries which are not correct I may accept additional entries. If you haven't sent a contest entry and there are nineteen entries posted already then don't post an entry until I request additional entries.

If your entry is posted when no further entries are requested, you cannot win a prize.

If you post "sending a contest email" message on this thread then your contest email must arrive within 30 minutes of the time of your post. If your message is one of the first nineteen and you think you are right then you will know where to look to see if you were successful.

Please do not post any other messages here, just the message "sending a contest email"

If you want to send a PM to a geocacher here in the Forums asking for help that is OK, but please, don't publicly disclose answers and don't send any messages requesting help to me, I will not offer any hints or help.

Here is one final piece of information that you may find helpful.

If you are a new member of geocaching.com and you have a Premium Membership then you are allowed to answer any three questions with the phrase "I am a Premium Member of geocaching.com".The phrase can be used to answer any three of the questions in the list above but you cannot use the phrase in lieu of identifying the exact trackable item that you are requesting.

So read these rules carefully and then try and figure out the answers.

I hope that the forum regulars will help me out by not publicly posting the answers to these questions.

Good luck new geocachers and have fun learning about this activity!

Can sock puppets play?

If you have a sock puppet account created between October 1st, 2008 and December 26, 2008 then you might be eligible! Your confusion is understandable, a lot of questions are not immediately apparent if you haven't been geocaching for awhile.

Take that first question for example, it is a good hint and experienced geocachers who love trackable items are probably gnashing their teeth. For new geocachers it looks like a list of random names but for those who love trackable items they are very familiar names. Dave's thread is 290+ pages long, pretty impressive for these forums! Question number 6 is another head scratcher for new geocachers and just a dead giveaway for those who have seen this man in action making decisions about the direction this ship (or liliypad as the case may be) is going to take.

I agree with your assessment of question number 7, it is entirely unrelated to geocaching in any way shape or form but it is closely related to the "geocaching community". Put the name of any famous person in there if you like but you won't win a nice trackable item if you do that!

Question number 9 is just an egregious attempt to get my favourite cache watched (and hopefully visited) by as many people as possible. Once a geocacher has the cache on their watchlist they will only get a few emails but I can guarantee they won't get any tnlnsl emails and they will know what kind of comments a really really good cache can elicit.

Question 10, OK I goofed on that one, are you familiar with Monty Python? My daughter owns a bunny (Sunny Muffins) and after seeing the "Holy Grail" it became one of her favourite movies. She insisted that I use that question and truth be told, it is pretty easy to answer for most people, think of it as a "freebie".

If you are still working on this Christmas Caching Puzzle, don't give up!! I thought it was around 3 Stars for difficulty but I am willing to concede it might be 4 Stars. A Mystery/Puzzle cache solution is often not apparent. The thing is that once you "crack" the puzzle it unfolds very quickly. I would advise new geocachers to use the features of the two websites to try and figure out what the answers might be. When you do figure out the puzzle everything else will just fall into place and your "hunt" will come to a successful conclusion.

I want to add this stipulation and comment - Enter each round only once, multiple entries from the same account will be disqualified. If you read the contest rules again then you will see that there may be additional entires accepted in the future, so don't give up! I am going to edit the contest rules to include the Enter each round only once stipulation. If further entires are requested then you can enter again in that round.

This is an important clue - If your message is one of the first nineteen and you think you are right then you will know where to look to see if you were successful.

If you do not know what that means then you may not have this Christmas Puzzle figured out.

If you are a new or experienced geocacher and you would like the chance to win a new unactivated Albertosaurus geocoin then you just have to take a picture of your geocaching bag and post it in the thread My Geocaching Bag in the Geocaching Topics forum. If you can't figure out the Chritmas Caching Puzzle then you can enter that contest for a chance to win one of these really cool geocoins just by taking a snapshot!

This contest will stay active until all the trackable items are given away.

If you are a new geocacher then completing this puzzle may seem to be a very difficult taask but it will be totally worth it, especially if you continue geocaching.

If you are just starting out here in the forums and on the goecaching.com website this Christmas Caching Puzzle will give you a really good set of tools going forward, if you can solve it.

As I have pointed out, it is OK to ask for help, just don't ask me!

Good Luck to tall the new geocachers (and sockpuppets).

Perhaps an explanation of sockpuppets is in order. A sockpuppet account is an account created by a regular forum user and it allows them to say things here in the Forums or in geocache logs that they do not want attributed to their regular forum identity or geocaching nickname. Sockpuppets can be simple shells or they can be constructed to be very realistic.

If by chance a regular forum user did create a sockpuppet account in the time frame that allows eligibility to the contest it would be very difficult to detect.

The restriction that states "your account must exist when this message is posted" was designed to preclude a rash of new sockpuppet accounts being created to take advantage of this trackable item giveaway.

The language of Location can at times be very clear, I would like to relate a tale that bespeaks that clarity.

Tonight I got an email from a cacher in New York City who asked me if I would consider extending the eligibility date for the contest to include September. My first inclination was to say no. When I first selected the dates I wanted them short so they would benefit newer geocachers. I went from an initial choice of a December 1st start to the October 1st date to include more of those who were asking for a GPS for Christmas.

So on with the tale...the Language of Location was actually spoken to me and here is how it happened :D:(:D

The email included a link to the account Profile so away I go.

I hit the Profile Page and all it says is NYC, Member and not much else.

So I hit the "See the forum posts for this user" link that is right there on the Profile Page and that jumps me over here to the Groundspeak Forums.

Over here I am able to read the posts she has made on the Forums, posts are an indelible record.

She got a GPS just recently and she is asking about maps, I don't read any of the threads but I do get an impression, she has an avatar and I sort of get to meet her through her posts.

I go Back over to geocaching.com and take the next tab, Geocaches.

I see two columns there, Hides and Finds. I see she has found 69 geocaches.

The next thing I see is that she has Found 19 Mystery/Puzzle caches, nineteen out of 69! Is she the daughter of James?*:(

Then it hits me, 19 - her total Mystery/Puzzle Find count = the number of Trackable items available in this contest. I am intrigued. So now I actually decide to look at her Mystery/Puzzle Finds.

I click on the Puzzle icon and go to a list of all her Mystery/Puzzle hides, wow, what is that. NO WAY BATMAN, her very first Find in the list of Mystery/Puzzle geocaches was placed by, WAIT FOR IT, ..................Mark!

Mark of Question Number 1 fame in the Christmas Caching Puzzle , that is right, that Mark.

Then I read the log on that and OH MY :D , not only was it the first Mystery/Puzzle find it was her very first geocache Find. I think the whole Mark, Question 1, First Find, First Puzzle thing is sort of out of control now. Could she be a sock-puppet of mine? One that I don't know about?

So I click back to her Geocache page and look at all of her List of Geocache Finds by clicking the link at the top, I want to see geocaches she has found recently and the first thing that strikes my eye is the the fact that this woman is finding caches that were hidden by elves. I am sure she doesn't really know what she is doing, it just looks that way. No one could possibly catch on that fast.

Then a chill runs down my spine and I actually might have heard Signal saying "look at her last Mystery/Puzzle find". It was a cache called "Just in Time" (or some similar name that would be just as eerie and when you see what it actually is you will swear I am making this all up.) She is asking for a deadline extension and her last Mystery/Puzzle find is called "Just in Time"

At that point I reached my decision.

I looked at all her Mystery/Puzzle Finds and I was impressed, she is very good at this.

I am pretty sure she is reading this thread.

Hi ******

I'll tell you what I am prepared to do.

Don't post here just mail me (you can use the geocaching.com website and my profile to email me) the correct name of the last trackable item in the series. Don't post here.

When you check the name of that last trackable item you will see that it was the only item selected as No. 1 in the series. I know you of all people will understand the very rare chance of this all being coincidence.

I am still convinced that you might be a sock puppet that I slipped into this Puzzle to make things more exciting but you and I know it isn't true. The players who solve the Christmas Caching Puzzle will be able to Find your name there. I wouldn't be surprised to see that Geocachers not even eligible will be trying to solve the Mystery/Puzzle just to see if I made all this up or if you are real. Who is your hairdresser?

If you are still reading and don't believe any of this I don't blame you, the coincidence represented in this tale is almost impossible for me to comprehend, I truly feel that the spirit of Christmas has just taken over the whole thread. I am so surprised I can hardly type.

*This subtext is another contest and it is only open to new Alberta geocachers who meet the date eligibility requirements for the Christmas Caching Puzzle, these may change tomorrow if our Mystery/Puzzle geocacher from New York strikes true it is however much easier than the Christmas Puzzle Cache. It is perhaps a two star. The chance of the dates changing tomorrow or soon are quite high, methinks. To enter the Alberta contest you must place a post in this thread that says "subtext contest".

Then send me an email using my profile page on geocaching.com.

Your email must provide a link to the correct profile.

I will only accept two entries (at this time) that say "subtext contest".

If you are right you will win a very nice trackable item but it will not be one of the items in the Christmas Caching Puzzzle trackable item series.

Here is the hint (all figures are approximated at time of writing and may change slightly) -

Puzzles are often favourites. You can confirm relative totals using 58.64 and 18.57 respectively.

Hint is edited to add - Compare the correct profile to the mystery New York geocachers profile using the numbers above.

Wavector... thanks for just so much fun

... tony the pony and I had a great time scooting about Groundspeak and geocaching.com looking for your "snippets". I can see why a newbie infatuation turns into true love. I am honored to have participated in this complex puzzle ... I felt rather like a sleuth. We've learned alot about geocaching. The prize was definitely worth the seek!

I agree Wavector, this was a lot of fun. Thanks for taking the time to put it together.

Its difficult, but worth the effort and you do learn a lot!

Thank you very much for your kind comments and I am so glad you enjoyed the puzzle.

I hope you enjoy the nice trackable items.

I know that our mystery New York geocacher has made progress and I expect that this puzzle will expand to include addiitonal dates or I am a sock puppet!!!

If you are an established geocacher or if you feel understand the forums or know the community then you might want to watch this puzzle thread or even put on your Puzzle Cap and solve some of the mysteries. You might be pleasantly surprised to find yourself in the front of the pack should the contest suddenly expand to include your account. The "subtext contest" for Albertans might have to be upgraded to 3 Stars from 2 simply because I thought it would be immediately answered.

If you are a new Alberta geocacher then the answers you need are not necessarily gained by experience. Read the Hint carefully and you will know where to look.

Some of these "community" questions might seem obscure but I assure you, I am proividing many hints (maybe not here on this thread but they are here). In the case of the "sub-text contest" I am not sure it is even necessary to provide additional Hints, just remember that this is a Mystery/Puzzle cache.

If you are a new geocacher then rest assured that the original items are still going to be given away to new geocachers, if/when the Puzzle expands and more players become eligible then I will add new prizes.

Thanks to everyone who is playing/solving the puzzle contests currently happening.

If you are not a Mystery/Puzzle cache fan then I would suggest you might benefit from looking for other contests currently running in other areas of the Forum and enter there for a chance to win nice geocaching things.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, geocaching is about connecting to other people.

Please don't ask questions here and don't ask me.

Good Luck.

Sending contest email now

I actually met you at a recent event... didn't hear anything until I checked the forums though. Can't wait to see how it turns out for me.

edit: oh, man I'm thick. I don't qualify, should have got my daughters account set up sooner...

Hi mrcanohead224

Your account is outside of the eligibility dates for the contest by ummmm, a little bit. ;)

Don't worry though, I have actually pointed out that established geocachers may want to solve some of these mysteries because this contest might expand to include more prizes and sub-contests may pop up for which you will be eligible. So pay attention!

If you have solved the Christmas Caching Puzzle you might want to review post #11 in this thread and see if there are any mysteries there that you might be able to crack.

That was a great event, Miles is a tremendous organizer and I understand that Prairie Swan was the the person who deserved the most thanks. When I asked where the log book was I think I created a bit of a stir but someone found one and all was well.

Don't give up and keep watching.

I guess if you met me then I must NOT be a sock puppet. That is a relief...whew.

Eligibility dates for the Christmas Caching Puzzle contest are being extended.

The new dates will include all accounts dated September 1st, 2008 to December 26th, 2008 (inclusive). These eligibility dates extend the contest to accounts created one month earlier than the previous dates. This will also change the eligibility dates for the "subtext contest" that is open to new geocachers in Alberta. Too see that contest and the requirements just go to Post 11.

If you are a new geocacher don't give up on this puzzle, there are a lot of trackable items to be won and there will be more chances to win a prize.

I have also been thinking about adding a few new prizes to the My Geocaching Bag contest being held in the Geocaching Topics forum. That contest is open to all geocachers, new and old, inexperienced and experienced. All you need to do is to take a picture of your geocaching bag and make a list of the contents and you could win a nice prize.

Good Luck Everyone

"what contest?"

The Christmas Caching Puzzle isn't just for new geocachers you know!!

This is an armchair caching experience.

This contest is all about geocaching.

So this sub-contest is open to everyone, just like geocaching.

I am very happy today. :) See me smiling!

1) What do I have?

2) Where did I get it?

3) How do you know this?

4) The final proof? (not "could be", it must be conclusive)

If you want to enter this contest then make a post here that says "what contest?".

Do not do this until you have an email ready to send.

Use my geocaching.com profile to send me an email, it must arrive within 30 minutes of your post on this thread to be eligible so I hope you have a reliable ISP.

Please do not post any of your links to this Christmas Caching Puzzle thread.

Your email cannot contain anything but links and cannot contain more than 4 links.

I will accept three contest entries that say "what contest". I may accept further entries after the intital three entries are accepted so keep watching even if you are not successful.

This contest has a "First to Find" Prize.

If you are a new geocacher and you have an account created between September 1st, 2008 and December 26th, 2008 inclusive then you may want to check this thread out for a chance to win a very nice trackable item.

The main Christmas Caching Puzzle contest is only going to be open to new geocachers and there are going to be nineteen nice trackable items given away.

The experienced geocachers can try the "what contest?" contest if they wish but it is difficult. Every contest I have posted is open to all new geocachers so don't be afraid to try them all.

The My Geocaching Bag thread on the Geocaching Topics forum is the easiest contest, you just need to post a picture of your geocaching bag and list the contents to be eligible.

If you are a new geocacher and you have been trying to crack The Christmas Caching Puzzle then please note that I have placed a ton of hints in my forum messages this morning so go and look and see if you can "find" the solution.

If you have solved the Christmas Caching Puzzle and you know where to look then you might want to look at item nineteen and read Post 11 in this thread, it may help you in a new contest that might show up!! (soon)

For new Alberta geocachers who are eligible for the Christmas Caching Puzzle there is a contest called the "sub-text" contest and it is included in Post 11. It should be fairly easy to solve. :D

If you have been trying to solve the puzzle then remember, lots of hints were added today.

Have fun everyone and good luck! :D

I want to repeat this stipulation and comment - Enter each round only once, multiple entries from the same account will be disqualified. If you read the contest rules again then you will see that there may be additional entries accepted in the future, so don't give up! When further entries are requested then you can enter again in that round.

This is an important clue - If your message is one of the first nineteen and you think you are right then you will know where to look to see if you were successful.

If you do not know what that means then you may not have this Christmas Caching Puzzle figured out.

You can see my Forum Posts by clicking on my name where it appears on this post. That will take you to the geocaching.com website and my Profile page where you will see a link that says "See the forum posts for this user"

There are a lot of posts that have hints in them and some actually discuss the mechanics of the contest design. The answers to solve all the puzzles will be found in the messages and on geocaching.com. Between the messages I have written here in the forums and the tools available on the geocaching.com website on your My Account page you can figure out these puzzles. You will learn about Bookmark Lists, Find Another Player and the design of pages that list caches in your area. Remember to search using exact names, in one forum post I gave an example that uses the difference between "Team Alamo" and "TeamAlamo"

Make sure you set up your home coordinates.

If you think you have won then go and check and you will see the trackable item that is going to be sent to you. If you cannot do that then keep working to crack the Christmas Caching Puzzle.

I was really hoping to have at least one email from an experienced geocacher by now in the "what contest?" contest that is occurring in Post 19 above, my mole tells me it is a very hard puzzle and likely not solvable unless someone is especially clever but I have great faith.

The noobs are going to clean out all nineteen trackable items before the old hands get one prize, "what contest?' indeed. ;)

If you are an old hand and you haven't solved the Christmas Caching Puzzle then this may all be frustrating for you. If you have a geocaching bag then post a picture of it over here in the My Geocaching Bag thread in the Geocaching Topics forum for a chance to win a nice prize.

If you are a Mystery/Puzzle cacher extraordinaire then I suggest you try and figure out the mysteries in the mysterious Post 11. If you have solved the Christmas Caching Puzzle then check out the owner of the nineteenth trackable item, how mysterious is that? ;)

If you are a new geocacher from Alberta and you know why the mysterious cacher from NY who likes Mystery/Puzzle caches might be related to this person then see the *sub-text contest also included in mysterious Post 11 and link the correct profile and you could win a nice prize. All prizes are trackable on geocaching.com.

This is a Mystery/Puzzle contest that is all about Mystery/Puzzle geocaching and Mystery/Puzzle geocaches. Mystery/Puzzle geocaches can be easy or they can be hard but solving the Mystery/Puzzle inevitably leads to a cache hunt and that is a lot fun, no mystery there.

Most of all this is about having fun and that isn't a puzzle, it is a "way".

Guys and Girls

If you do fall into this contests guide lines do yourself a favour and take up the challenge!

Not only will you find out some great history of Geocaching while you research all of the questions, you will be better equipped to use the Geocaching web site and these forums at the end of it, giving you a overall better caching experience no doubt.

To top it all off the prize is a cracker, I wish I could say more

So get to it :) it's great fun even if you don't win.

This is a total unsolicited bump! I had fun doing it and wanted to spread the word.

I hope that the people working on the Christmas Caching Puzzle are having fun! I have had several people ask me about the trackable items that are available in this contest and I can tell you that every trackable item I am giving away in the contests you see running on the Groundspeak Forums right now is due to the generosity of another geocacher or geocaching group. I have had the pleasure of meeting geocachers like Jon or Marianne and I have worked closely with geocachers like Frank and know how they have helped shaped the landscape when it comes to nice trackable items. I really enjoyed meeting Dave and his Mega Event was very cool, it was an example of great organization. I have never met Mark personally but I have it on good authority that he really really likes trackable items and I hope to remedy the lack of a meeting some day.

I enjoy trackable items and I have a few that I own and I would never part with but the items that are available in the Christmas Caching Puzzle contest all share a common theme, they are all part of a series and they are the result of a great donation by a group of geocachers who really enjoy geocaching and trackable items.

This is not the only contest in where you can win a prize and the challenge in this puzzle is figuring out exactly which trackable item you should ask for!!!

If you have the right item then you can go and see the others who have won, and remember that no matter what you see follow the rules for your request, don't jump to conclusions.

For people who have entered this round remember, only one Entry per Round or you may be disqualified. If you have entered and you cannot see the other winners and that you are a winner then you may not have the Christmas Caching Puzzle figured out.

If you post a picture of your geocaching bag over here in the My Geocaching Bag thread in the Geocaching Topics forum you could win a nice prize, all you have to do is post a picture of your geocaching bag and list the contents to be eligible, it is a very easy contest and designed to help new geocachers and new readers of the website. Pay attention over there because valuable information is conveyed by the pictures.

If you have figured out the Christmas Caching Puzzle then you might want to go out armchair geocaching by trying to solve "what contest?" which by some strange coincidence is found in Post 19 of the Mystery/Puzzle. The 'what contest?" is very similar to the Christmas Caching Puzzle in that you need to get information from both websites to figure out the Mystery/Puzzle but it is intended to appeal to people who are established geocachers and already know how to use the websites to find out information. It is very important to remember that these puzzles are not disconnected from the activity of geocaching and can help you figure out the geocaching landscape in your own area!

If you really enjoy Mystery/Puzzle contests then you might want to review the mysterious Post 11. For people who have already figured out the Christmas Caching Puzzle you might want to look at item number nineteen in the series and check out the owner, a mystery for sure! If you are an old hand and you are not eligible for the nice items in the Christmas Caching Puzzle you might want to look at the nineteenth item as well. You will have a good headstart when and if a hamstercaching contest begins.

A new part of the puzzle will be unfolding very shortly and if you are really a bear for trackable items and have a large collection this new contest will really appeal to you! Watch for it.

Don't give up, if you have figured out the answer to the ten questions you have a good start. Keep looking and pay attention and you can figure it out, be ready and you will have a good chance to win an item when I request further entries!!

I want to thank everyone who has entered the Christmas Caching Puzzle.

If you don't know where to look to see if you are a winner than you may not have figured out this Christmas Caching puzzle.

You may have to find another player to help you win a nice trackable item!

If you like puzzles then there are several other contests running right now in which you could win a prize. The easiest contest is called My Geocaching Bag and all you have to do is post a picture of your geocaching bag. You have to be a geocacher (even one geocache find and you are qualified) but it doesn't get much easier. If you have found one geocache then you can also enter another contest.

If you check the Geocoin Discussion forum then you can find a contest called"Nice spot here for a bit of butty munching" that will help you learn how to use the geocaching.com website to follow trackable items. Stage One is easy and informative and you could win a nice prize for your entry.

There is a contest to challenge established geocachers and old forum hands called "what contest?" . It is tough.

There is another hint in this message if you are having trouble finding the right place to see if you have won a nice trackable item in the Christmas Caching Puzzle. If you have been working on the puzzle don't quit, when you solve it you will know and there are still many nice trackable items to be won.

If you have entered and you cannot see if you are a winner then you need to figure out that part of the puzzle. If you have the ten questions answered then watch for hints and be ready when new entries are requested, you will have a head start.

I will accept additional entries in "what contest?"

There have been three attempts to solve "what contest?" and they have been pretty good attempts. There is a new clue for "what contest?"posted in the Win a geocoin thread in the Geocoin Discussion Forum.

If you are working on the Christmas Caching Puzzle then here is a very clear hint, you need to look closely at the My Geocaching Bag thread and then you need to Find another player.

Good Luck.

There are still nice trackable items being given away in this puzzle so don't give up!

I placed some very clear hints, I will be posting a hint thread at some point but there are some really clear hints already posted. All geocaching.com accounts created between September 1st, 2008 and December 26th, 2008 (inclusive) are eligible in this contest.

Here is a copy of the hint I just posted up thread.

You need to look closely at the pictures in the My Geocaching Bag thread and then you need to Find another player on geocaching.com.

If you do those two things then you could win a very nice trackable item!

Give it a try and you will be happy that you did.

wavector,

I received my trackable item. Thank you very much! It's a beautiful prize. I'll be the centerpiece of my first cache hide. Thank you for the travel bug too, it was an unexpected surprise!

Dan

I am glad to hear prizes are arriving OK. The other item included is called a "travel bug buddy" and they are not actually a Travel Bug they are meant to make a traveling geocoin look more like a Travel Bug.

The "travel bug buddy" tags are relativley inexpensive ($2.00US) and they are intended to be attached to a geocoin (usually people drill a hole to do this) to make the geocoin resemble a Travel Bug.

A geocoin is already a trackable item and new geocachers who may have seen official Travel Bugs often overlook the fact that a geocoin is the same as a Travel Bug, it is already owned by another geocacher.

This "travel bug buddy" tag has the distinctive shape of a Groundspeak Travel Bug tag but it has no number itself so it isn't actually a Travel Bug. When it is attached to a geocoin the geocoin should be more readily recognizable as an owned trackable item, the tag tells finders not to be keepers.

If you intend to have traveling geocoins then one of the best ways to help ensure they travel far is to make sure they are easily identifiable as an activated trackable item, these buddy tags are a great way to do that.

I posted a message about adoptions in the Geocoin Discussion forum and anyone who would like to adopt can send a request and that can be arranged.

Thanks again for all the great contest entries.

If you have entered Round One of the Christmas Caching Puzzle and did not won a prize you can now Enter Again.

If you have entered once and did not win a prize then this is a chance for you to re-enter and perhaps this time you will win!

If your account creation date is September 1st, 2008 to December 26th, 2008 (inclusive) then you are eligible for the Christmas Caching Puzzle contest and there are still nice trackable items available to be won so go ahead and enter. This contest will help you understand the history of this activity a little better and will help you figure out the these two websites, geocaching.com and forums.Groundspeak.com.

If you read the first line you would see that you are not eligible for that contest!

If you like short contests and I know you are eligible then try "what contest?". It is very easy to read but not so easy to figure out. See post 19 in this thread.

If you are really up on the websites and the community then try the hamstercaching contest in the hamstercaching thread, Post #109

If you don't read and don't know the websites well then try My Geocaching Bag, it is pictures mostly.

If you are a keener and can figure things out then enter the "Nice spot here for a bit of butty munching." contest, Stage One is easy but the stages will get harder, it is about trackables.

There you go.

The Christmas Caching Puzzle is intended for new geocachers and it is designed to help them figure out these websites and they can win an nice item as well, unforunatley there is no way to avoid the reading.

The "subtext contest" is

CLOSED

I haven't had any Alberta entrants to the contest and it is a fairly simple contest.

James is of course j2d2 the Alberta Charter Member who solves all the difficult puzzles in Alberta (and finds the caches as well!!).

James has hidden one of my Favourite Mystery/Puzzle caches, The Fellowship of the Cache which is a great example of a really well designed puzzle cache.

The reference to the mysterious New York cacher who requested an extension to the dates can be cofirmed by checking the profile of j2d2 against the profile of the mystery cacher, if you multiplied her counts of Total Caches Found/Mystery Caches Found by the numbers provided in the hint you would have the totals that are found (were found on that date) in James profile.

wavector,

I recieved my trackable item and bug buddy today from the Christmas Puzzle. I just wanted to say thank you for the gift. It topped off a day that finally saw warmer weather here. I celebrated by going out and finding 4 caches. I will be sending an adoption request to the appropriate member. Thanks again.
