The Oldest "unfound" Geocache

Recommended Posts

I was wondering which is the oldest unfound geocache. I have found a couple in my province which have had no attempts since placed. They are entering the third year of being unfound with no notes or checks or finds. The hiders are still active on geocaching.com, one cache had a maintenance check done by the owner in the summer of 2003.

The caches I am referring to in my area are

Ram Glacier Cache and

The Gap

Which is the oldest unfound geocache in the world ?

Oh so blue in Belize was placed 1/6/2001, and hasn't been found.

I added that cache to my watchlist.

I suppose the fact that the cache security situation is firmly in hand discourages the cache pirates of the Caribbean.

No mention of the FTF prize either, that has to put off a lot of the treasure hunters.

Perhaps no one wants to admit to using the billion dollar satellites and a million dollar boat to find a tupperware box hidden in the mangroves. (It could be an ammo can, not tupperware).

At least someone tried to find that one.

Is that the oldest unfound geocache ?

I just reread the note left by "The Kodiaks" on the cache called The Gap. It appears it was logged on site by the year 2003 but it was never logged on geocaching.com, I guess that makes that one found. I think that makes The Ram Glacier Cache the oldest one in Alberta. The 35K hike, that isn't for the daytrippers. Perhaps it is a cache that "The Kodiaks" would be interested in. ;)

That is a good nick for that team, they put some really difficult caches way out there, many go unfound for a long time.

Here's the list of the oldest (earliest "Date Placed" field) where the cache is still listed as unfound.

Oh so blue in Belize was hidden on Jan 6 2001 and hasn't been found.

Brasil Challenge in Brazil was hidden on Apr 5 2001 and hasn't been found.

Stash in Toi moor in Estonia was hidden on Apr 7 2001 and hasn't been found.

Redboy in Brazil was hidden on Apr 22 2001 and hasn't been found.

Bear's paw stash in Estonia was hidden on May 6 2001 and hasn't been found.

All Saints in Mexico was hidden on May 26 2001 and hasn't been found.

Piibe stash in Estonia was hidden on Jun 16 2001 and hasn't been found.

Arekuna in Venezuela was hidden on Jun 20 2001 and hasn't been found.

Geocache in Bolivia was hidden on Jun 21 2001 and hasn't been found.

Kougarok in Alaska, U.S. was hidden on Jun 23 2001 and hasn't been found.

Reclusion in French Guiana was hidden on Jun 23 2001 and hasn't been found.

4.5lb Walleye in Ontario, CAN was hidden on Jun 23 2001 and hasn't been found.

To get to something in the Continental U.S. you have to go here:

Devil's Dancefloor in California, U.S. was hidden on Sep 3 2001 and hasn't been found.

Problem is that since that's on a National Park, the only reason it's still active is so that once it's found, it will be archived. ;)

Thanks Markwell

I am almost convinced that I am going to have become a Premium Member soon just for the ability to query the database. I enjoy reading and learning about caches and TB's, the more history the better. The oldest. the highest, the most found, the unfound, most traveled, most traded, It would make an interesting list, one that highlights some of the caches and TB's that are part of the history of this activity. I went looking for the oldest unfound geocache in Oregon, my search got pre-empted by dinner and it is a good thing, those folks are keeners.

Now I just have to convince the wife and kids that they really want to see the Ram Glacier Cache. ;)

Could anyone tell me the oldest not found in Georgia?

This is actually easier to find. Go to the Advanced search page and choose Georgia. On the results, click on the >> on the page listing and it will take you to the last page.

Start reading through them and pageing backward and eventually you'll find one without a Last Found log. In less than 5 minutes, I confirmed Darbow Island Cache by Spartina, willy, robby, cindy (GCA8C8) as the oldest unfound Geocache in Georgia.

I tried that, re: Oldest unfound geocache in Oregon. It only took a few hundred clicks of the mouse.

In Oregon, the oldest unfound is this one

Mr. Greeley goes to Owyhee.

Which state is the best at finding geocaches ?

The description for Mr. Greeley isn't very encouraging for family geocachers on the shank's mare, swimming in rivers and all.

This cache has had no attempts, no notes, in almost two years. Is there a state where the oldest unfound is this year ?

If you go to get one of theses caches, what would you take with you to put in there ?

I added Mr. Greeley to my watchlist, notice it is a micro, took agate, left 1 Oz. Maple Leaf Coin

This cache needs the restroom Attribute added, that would make it friendlier and it might get found sooner.

This one is actually inside Yosemite National Park and the only reason it is active is that the local Approver asked that someone check up on it to remove it. It's on my list "to do" soon as the snow melts and the road into the nearby campground is open.

This is a question whose answer will change daily, it appears.

As near as I can tell, there are currently no unfound caches in:

Delaware

District of Columbia

New Hampshire

Also, the only unfound cache in Connecticut was placed today, and the only unfound cache in South Carolina was placed 4 days ago.

And if we discount caches that are currently disabled, then the only unfound caches in West Virgina and Nebraska were placed today and yesterday.

A cache that you have to swim a river (multiple times!) in the middle of nowhere...and it's a film cannister micro!!!

No wonder no one wants to look for it....
