Coin moving by one person

Hello all

Today I was checking on my Stonehenge Benchmark coin. It's logged an amazing 16,000 miles and I've been thrilled. It fulfilled its mission--to go to Stonehenge--and has been traveling around Europe almost since it was launched in 2007 in VA. AND it's still circulating and hasn't been stolen like a lot of coins and TBs.

But I noticed something I hadn't noticed before. For over a year, the same cacher has been logging it (in Germany). If I remember correctly, this is called "dipping"? Where someone logs it as being dropped in a cache but then they take it to another one and log it? While I appreciate that miles have been added to its journey, it doesn't seem right that the same person has basically had possession of my coin for over a year. I didn't know people would hold on to a coin and log it that long. Is this a common practice?

To me, that doesn't seem right and I'd rather the coin be free to be picked up and moved by different cachers. I mean, I could see someone doing that for a few caches...but...over a YEAR??

I don't know whether to say something or not. I don't want to risk offending someone where they might just keep the coin and it disappear into the hinterland.

Not sure what to think...... :(

I think I would e-mail the cacher and ...

"Thank you for all the activity blah blah ... Really pleased that my trackable has made it's goal with your help blah blah ....

Now that the goal has been reached, is there any chance that you will be releasing it into another cache anytime soon so others may enjoy my coin/trackable?

Thank you blah blah. If you have any questions, please ask blah blah."

Hard for anyone to feel offended with that approach. Good luck !!

You've released a coin that has a greater chance of being lost or going missing than not and now it's picked up by someone who could have stolen it but instead logs it regularly. I know it's annoying but it's also a win-win. They get to keep a coin for a while and you get to enjoy its travels. The alternative is that the more cachers it sees the greater the chance you'll never see it again or hear from it again.

Sometimes a little discomfort in the short term gets you what you want in the long term.

I've thought about that too. But before it was moving through countries--Bahrain, Paris France, Netherlands, England, etc. Now it's just circling one part of Germany. I just wish I knew his intentions....is he going to keep for his own and just dip it now and again? Maybe this is a new way to steal a coin. You keep it but you log some miles on it every now and then to appease the owner.

Its sort of like slavery. I'd like my coin to be FREEEEEEEEE! lol

I guess I could go edit the text on my log and ask it not be "dipped" more than 3 times or something. :(

So it's one thing to do a lot of visits. I don't care for that, either, and it's worth saying something about that in the description.

But keeping a coin for over a year is an entirely different issue. That's rude and obnoxious. You should definitely ask them personally to release it as soon as possible. (Make sure to be nice, of course, although I wouldn't feel very nice if I were in your shoes.)

I'm sorry, but after a year, I'd assume that the coin was lost and long forgotten, and all I'm seeing are autologs that have nothing to do with my coin. Nothing remotely like a win.

Besides, I release travelers so people can see them. No matter how many caches this coin's been to, it's still only been seen by one person for the last year. As far as I'm concerned, it might as well be lost.

"Get to keep the coin for a while" and holding it (if they still have it at all) for a year doesn't quite seem the same.

I'd email, thanking them for, "taking care of it so long", but now it's time for others to share in its adventures.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's long gone.

It's the old story: Don't release anything into the wild, you care about. Sending out a coin into the caches of the world is literally loosing it, but getting to know its whereabouts. (Hopefully...)

I've sent quite a few travellers out, some of them lost. That's part of the game, I'm afraid. They can be muggled, they can be lost with the cachebox, they can be stolen by cachers or they could even be kept by children of uneducated parents, who don't teach them the intensions of a traveller.

I do keep dipping coins into caches along the route, if I don't drop them off imidetly. They get miles as well as some nice detours and not just the one line from cache A to cache B.

Of course I agree, that keeping a coin for a year is way to long. Especially if the reason isn't comunicated to the owner.

But still I would be annoyed it the visited logs were deleted...

In the past I had a coin for some four month, because after that time I could fullfill the mission of going to Egypt. It was agreed with the owner, that I should keep it.

In that autumn I was quite busy and the coin got logs from Poland, Netherland, Danmark and of course within Germany before we went on holiday in Egypt.

There it got lost along with my own traveller in a cachebox within the hotel grounds. A place, I considered safe enough...

Those things happen, but the stories are still lovely and that's why I still keep sending out coins and TBs.

Edit: another silly typo...

I don't mind someone "dipping" for a bit or even holding if there is a purpose like getting it towards its goal. My annoyance is at the amount of time. I can't remember the most recent log but it wasn't that long ago so he/she is still "moving" it. But when I saw the range of dates I flipped! To me that is more like KEEPING a coin.

Yes, I know that most coins go missing and that why I have been so thrilled how this one has survived and travelled! I never in a million years would have thought it would even get to Stonehenge much less all the countries past that!

Maybe I will try a nice note (with a German translator?) and see if I can get him to release it back to the wild. Yeah, maybe FREE isn't the right word. lol

I sent a TB out in honor my geo-hound that passed away and that disappeared within a few weeks. I was heartbroken because it was a sentimental TB. That's why I'm still holding coins I've bought that I really like. I might need to sell some though. I need $$$.

You're right, keeping a coin in the inventar for a long time isn't what one would wish for.

Check your traveller, is it marked as collectible yes? Do change it to not collectible. 'Cause that means, the finder can keep it, even if it is yours.

Please don't use a translator, most Germans can speak reasonably well English, a translator is always making a mess of the message.

If you write positive, thanking the cacher for taking your coin to reach its goal of Stonehenge, chances are higher for a positive response. You don't want to loose the traveller, and at last it's getting miles and logs while staying in the caching bag of someone.

I'd rather have my coins in possesion of a cacher than out in a cache with potential danger of being muggled...
